Do you (or anyone else) know - is the cost of living considered less in New Jersey?  Rutgers is pretty close to NYC, after all.
I dont think it's much different than LI. Maybe houses are a little cheaper

Houses near Rutgers are cheap compared to LI.

It depends on what areas. Like anywhere its funny how life changes in 15 min of driving.

Not knowing who the coach is or their connections to the city game... I wonder how much Jared Grasso would command as an assistant if he doesn't get the Fordham job?  It's not just about the coach, it's about the staff as well.

I would add Chris Mooney from Richmond on the list.

I would pick Greenberg though.  Solid track record at a football school.  A friend of mine says he has recruited DC pretty well.  If he is willing to play the game here and hire some NYC assts, i am all for it.  A 2 time ACC coach of the year as well.
Caveat emptor

Lol. Your friend must've confused him with someone else. He's only had one good recruit, Allen, to come from D.C. in seven years at the school. Assuming he makes it back this year, he'll have made The tournament twice in seven years.

If I were you, I wouldn't put an enormous amount of stock into Coach of the Year awards in the ACC. It tends to go to coaches that have exceeded the press' initial low expectations. Roy Williams won the national title last year and dominated the league, but they gave it to Leonard Hamilton. UVA fired Leitao two years after the ACC press voted him Coach of the Year.
Good point.  He's competent, but not elite.  I predict he hears an offer from St. John's and VT ups his salary to something comparable; St. John's moves on the Mccaffery and Willard.

Why Willard and not Pecora? What's the difference?

Haven't we had this argument already?!  ;D

Willard is younger, and I think he has more upside.  You can make an argument for Pecora, but I am pretty sure he will be an okay, middle-ish (3rd quartile) of the league coach. Willard has taken Iona from a 2 win team to 3rd in his league.  I think he may just be a good coach who can build a program, and Pitino's ex-coaches seem to have generally done well for themselves.  So that's a point in his favor as well.

Actually, the argument should be made for neither.

Willard took a bad team and made them good again. Pecora did the same thing in a tougher conference.
Still, I want a guy from a high major program who's had experience competing against the type of team we have not been able to beat.

Seth Greenberg is on the lower half of "home runs' candidates, but as of late, he's done very well at Va Tech. Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino etc. These are the names we should be starting with.

Agreed?

Great post, posion. These guys are aiming too low. St Johns is going to need a big name to consistently contend

Me, I'm not a fan of Pitino.  I would like the school to get a coach who can become a piece of history, not a guy who will retire in 5 years, mailing it in the last 2 or so (intentionally or not).  Not that Pitino will do that, but it's a worry.

Donovan would be interesting.  But I spend enough of my damn time on the boards dreaming of a better team, I can't spend more time dreaming of something that cannot financially happen.  Sure, they can call.  But I don't think the school even has 2 mill to give to a coach, let alone 3+.  Perhaps they can call Scott Drew or some other good Big 12 coach (Capel?); Leonard Hamilton from the ACC.  But I don't expect much to come froma  coach who can expect to command more than 2 mill per.

I guess that's a good point. Pitino is old, but, then again, it can be risky to get a guy who's too young.
We need an experienced high major guy. Leonard Hamilton has won at two programs that were bottom feeders before he got there. He can coach my team, if he wants to.

Capel was great last year, but I want a guy who can with or without top talent. He had the best player in the country last year, and they had a great season. he leaves, and they're done. Not a good sign.

I forgot that Hamilton's that old.  Boy, his first 6 years at Miami look like Norm's last 6 years.  Maybe worse.

One thing about Capel - he was great at Virginia Commonwealth for 4 years.  I'd give him a pass - Mason-Griffin and Tiny Gallon aren't great defenders and Willie Warren, perhaps, has no leadership heart.  I really thought he'd be awesome this year.

He's an excellent recruiter (arguably one of the top dozen in the game today), but he's in danger of missing the 65 team NCAA tournament with a pair of potential 2010 NBA lottery picks and another guard with a great chance of making the league.

This could be the most racially insensitive posts I have seen on here.  More than half the students in the school aren't Catholic, religion doesn't matter at all when hiring a basketball coach, it's not like he's giving mass or anything, he's coaching basketball.

Before leaving, the last AD gave him a contract that apparently continually rolls over (five years). Essentially, according to a GT writer, the Jackets would have to pay him in the neighborhood of 7.5 M if they fired him-which is how he's survived. The boosters helped with Chan Gailey, but the economy was in better shape.
