I want Jeff Capel as Next St. John's Coach!!!!!!!

I don't know if you could get anyone better than Capel (unless Billy D is knocking on that door).  Great pedigree with his father and playing for Coach K.  Only 35 years old.

Made 1 NCAA and 1 NIT in 4 years at Virginia Commonwealth.  At Oklahoma, has made 2 NCAAs in 4 years (2 in 3 once he was able to start recruiting), including an Elite 8 loss to UNC last season.  He has recruited 4-5 McDonald's All-Americans since at Oklahoma, including Blake Griffin who was #1 pick in the NBA Draft.

Poor season this year, but I believe they were a lot of injuries...might help him in wanting to make the jump.

Can't think of any reasons why we WOULDN'T want Jeff Capel as our next coach.  I think Capel brings us the best resume we could get this side of Billy Donovan.  Personally, I don't want a coach in his high 50s early 60s either, so other than Billy Donovan, Jeff Capel is prob my #1 choice.

What do peple think?  Monasch - make the call!

I don't think he has the NYC recruiting ties Monasch seems to be indicating is important.

Why would we have a better shot with a 2 time national champion and one of the highest paid coaches in the game than a guy who has been at Okla for 4 years?

Capel has recruited 4-5 McDAA's...I would imagine that kind of resume would be fine provided he added NYC guys.  Does anyone have a doubt that Capel could recruit to St. John's?

Billy D aint comin but he may have some respct fo the program cause he grew up here durin' the glory days.

A coach who is at a bigger school and has got no local ties aint gonna find this job attractive at all. St. John been off the national radar fo a long, long time.

Not saying he is coming here but supposedly Capel is not thrilled at Oklahoma right now and he knows hoops will always be viewed at as less important than football there.

My cousin knows him a little bit and said he'd be more open to an overture at this point than he was last year (when UVA came). His wife would likely want a law school position (Yale law, Duke undergrad), but they could handle that.  He's a voracious recruiter and tends to dress in a way that's more hip hop, which he's comfortable with, on visits than the standard coaching attire, but it seems to be effective so far. Long term, he wants that Duke job (his father-in-law was recently named the head of their Board of Trustees), but that's several years away.

He's not at the level of the older guys like Calhoun, Pitino, Boeheim, etc. yet, but he definitely would move us up the Big East ladder. I'd be impressed if Monasch could pull it off.

I've been told similar things - i.e., that he's looking to get back to the East Coast.

  Jeff Capel is a Duke kid...that coaching tree is horrible...absolutely horrible...they sucked this season.injuries or not...they were horrible..and he wants out cause he has nobody coming in.and you bash Tubby Smith...something is seriously wrong with you...Tubby's resume runs circles around anyone who has been mentioned...if you can take a team in the middle of frozen nowhere, who won 8 games the year before you arrived, take them to two dances in three years, win 20 each year you were there.after never missing the dance with kentucy, and never losing in the first round..thats impressive

Do tell...when did Jeff Capel ever coach at Duke?  He's not part of the Coach K coaching tree.  He did play for Coach K, yes.  But he learned to coach under his father. 

But you're right, Coach K doesn't produce any assistants, he only has guys as head coach of Notre Dame and Stanford, along with duke, the schools who have the best academic/sports combos in the country.

And then a guy at Harvard.  Yeah I would really hate to have coached under Coach K...you certainly don't become successful there.   ::) ::) ::)

When have I bashed Tubby?  Tubby is older and is an SEC guy (yes, duhhhh I know Minnesota isn't in the SEC but he coached at UK and Georgia for many years....).  I don't see why he'd come here over Auburn, and I don't know why we'd take him over an up and comer like Capel, McCaffrey, etc.

I think you guys are severely over estimating who we would be able to get. No way Tubby/Donovan/Capel even think about taking this job, I mean come on, lets be real. I'd be happy with Greenburg/McCaffery/Hewitt

 Tubby would come in a ny minute...and he is younger than roy williams, coach k....would you fire them because of age??? and you know your in the tournament with Tubby, and he went to minn??? why not ny....and he has a great staff, and a great class coming in..and if you look at his salary...we can afford him...

Always worked at large public universities.  Don't compare TUbby to Roy will and Coach K.  If Tubby was truly interested I'd have him way up there, but not before Capel.  Prefer Capel at age 35 than Tubby.

 I dont know how good Capel would be as a head coach...he wasnt good this year..his class coming in next year isnt what one would expect...Tubby already has a great class locked up.He is on the move, and brings a very talented son with him. my point is K and Roy are both the same age as Tubby...are you looking to replace them?? You want a homerun..there is your homerun...go to wikipedia and read his profile...

Who are you guys saying Tubby has a great class next season? I went through rivals and I saw they had exactly zero recruits in the top 150
