Very encouraging that we are throwing this kind of money around.  Silver lining, no doubt.

This article made me have 2 reactions.  First, the obvious this sucks we're not going to get Donovan.  Secondly, and more importantly it appears we are willing to dish out big cash to a coach and now these coaches know it.  Some of them may have not taken us seriously before but now they might make a call to inquire about the job.  If we really offered him 3 million there is no way we should be settling on someone like Pecora.

That's a shame but I appreciate the effort.

Donovan may be comfortable with the way his life is right now but he had the chance to be known as the guy who brought SJU back and he turned it down. I don't blame him but I also think he chose comfort over a challenge and one that could have made him legendary. Like I said though, I don't blame him and I wish him happiness in Florida.

Try Pitino next!

Donovan's won two NCAA titles, is 44, and put Florida on the map nationally.
He's got little pressure and is already set to be legendary as a college coach.
He doesn't need to help DePaul, St. John's, Seton Hall, or any other has-been program get back to what remaining fans think it should be, in order to make a name for himself.

Hard to believe Donovan refused a 4 million dollars pay cut ** to coach in Jamaica. I mean, considering SJ's great tradition and all: the wonder five, Joe Lapchick, all those NIT banners. Plus he's a NY Guy, having been born on Long Island like 40 years ago, that should count for something. Some people would think that the fact that he left Long Island as soon as he reached adulthood and never returned meant he doesn't like it there, but I think he was just waiting for the opportunity to reach the top of his profession by beating NYU and Fordham, just like Louie did. Donovan won a couple national championships, sure, but if you don't win them in Queens do they really count? Maybe someone should point out to Donovan that Queens is pretty close to Manhattan and when you take the train to Manhattan you feel really cool. That feeling alone is worth a million or two.

** (A salary of $3,500,000 in Gainesville, Florida should increase to $6,776,887 in Syosset, New York.)

It's amazing how many people throughout all the sites refuse to read carefully.  We have no idea how much was offered, the newspaper just reports that it is in EXCESS of 3 mil per year.

According to a confidant of Donovan, St. John's wealthy alum Mike Repole - who built his fortune as co-founder of Vitaminwater maker Glaceau - represented himself as an advocate for the school and offered the Long Island product a contract in excess of $3 million per year to take the job.

True, but in general in excess of 3 million means 3.2 million or thereabouts. A 3.9 million offer would be a contract 'just shy of four million.' A 4.3 million offer would be 'in excess of 4 million.' And so on. It's not like they're going to describe an offer of 6 million per as 'in excess of 3 million.'

Big mosquito problem in Fla! Plus in NYC if you go golfing and hit a ball near some water you don't have to worry about a gator taking off your arm. Likewise you can have an uncovered pool and not worry about swimming with gators, lizards and other assorted wildlife. Lastly Donovan is sort of pale and I can't imagine the Fla sun is very forgiving on him. Lastly no Rednecks! I think he should change his mind!

http://www.zagsblog.com/2010/03/23/florida-says-zero-truth-to-donovan-story/#more-30524

Florida is flatly denying Tuesday’s Daily News story that a St. John’s booster offered Billy Donovan more than $3 million per year to coach the Red Storm.

“St. John’s did not contact us regarding Billy Donovan. There is no truth to the report that he turned down $3 million a year….zero truth,” said Fred Demarest, Florida’s assistant AD for Communications.

The Daily News quoted a source saying that billionaire St. John’s alum Mike Repole, the founder of Glaceau, offered Donovan a contract  on behalf of the school

“Thank you so much but no thank you,” said Donovan, according to the source, called a “confidant” by the paper.

here's what i don't get about this story...Repole is a billionaire...he loves this program...LOVES it...if he wanted donovan to come here he would make him the highest paid coach in D1...why would a billionaire go after a 3.5 mill a year guy with 3 mill???...this story doesnt make sense

now that the story has been denied...do we still have a shot or has the idea of refusing the offer a bad omen?

the question is how much are we really playing with here...lets for arguments sake say we can really offer 3 mill to a coach this year...a lot of guys are in play for that kind of cash...and until donovan publicly says something, he is still in play...bad omen? no...in what has been about a half week of hard speculation about him possibly interested in st johns, he has not come out and stated anything regarding st johns...if he wasnt interested at all why wouldnt he say it...he has recruits, parents, current players and admin all wondering what is going on...rumors can damn sure screw things up for him going into next season, so why hasnt he stepped up and said in a statement he is not going to st johns?...bc hes entertaining the idea...even if monasch hasnt contacted the florida AD to ask permission to speak with him, you would have to believe donovan would come out with a statement in response to the rumors

You make a really good and valid point. Usually these coaches who are blindsided by rumors and have no interest in going to the rumored team just release a statement or kill the rumors with an interview and yet...we've heard absolutely nothing from Donovan or Pitino .

Thats really interesting.

A few thoughts....

Monasch said directly a few days ago that he preferred to reach out using third parties and that
interested coaches should have a third party contact him if interested.  Presumably that means
that it is just easier to cut through all the red tape of asking permission, dealing with rumors,
subjecting coaches to negative attention for considering another job, and  so on.

Although Donovan may have said no, we still have a window of a week or so to get this done.
Repole, who is quickly becomng a hero to me, has the dough and probably knows a few other
wealthy STJ supporters to sweeten the deal.  I get the feeling he doesn't like coming in second
place and doesn't sette in any aspect in his life.

The deal is reported to be in EXCESS of 3 million per.  I don't think a guy like Repole goes
to a coach and offers him less than his current salary in a state that doesn't have a state
income tax.  I imagine the deal includer other incentive suc as a share of increased revenue or
gate receipts.  I would also suspect that Repole would offer a similar sponsorship deal for his new company  that he
extended to 50 cent and David Wright while serving as the head of Glaceau.  Those deals included
a % of ownership of the company which turned out to be the best investments they could have
made.
