wow, how out of tune am i with the world, i had no idea he coached, or had that level of success...why did he stop coaching?

The fans hated him.

The players hated him.

He recruited great talent and pretty much Hewitt'ed it - never met expectations.  With 5 NBA players (hear that, Carmine?  )

Funny, though - looking back, those are some excellent records.  But I remember those teams being really frustrating to watch.  They should have been dominant like Kansas and UNC are now (barring this year of UNC), and they were most certainly not.

well the most talented, experience, well coached team in the country just lost to a bunch of no names from nothern iowa so no ones perfect...reading his resume the guys legit...at least an interesting thing to talk about here lol

in all seriousness, why hasnt this guy been offered a job since then...hes done it all, from recruiting, to winning conference regular season titles, postseason titles...he got to the elite 8, sweet 16 numerous times, knocked off 4 #1's in 4 years...produced good pro players...so because hes only been commentating for the last 7 years hes a joke to offer a contract to?

I disagree with your premise.  There is no max amount of nba talent you should want on your basketball team.  5, 10, 15?  Studs are always better than role players.  Your wrong.

Never said you can't win with 5 NBA players.  But some coaches are better at managing the egos and talents. We disagree on this, and that's fine!

Then Baron Davis got rolling. Talking about his own time with the Bruins, he took a swipe at Marin native Steve Lavin, saying, "We should have a banner up there: the only team to make the tournament without a coach."

I don't know 6 tournament appearances in 7 years at UCLA got canned after the first one he missed. UCLA has some high standards. I think with the right staff surrounding him he could be a gem.

Also he has been of interest to other schools vacancies but apparently he's enjoying the easy life of being an analyst. Well easy in comparison to the everyday hustle of being a college basketball coach.

 Almost get the impression he's been blackballed for some reason. Amazed he's never got another coaching gig.

I have to do more digging on him.

 he has had offers...nc state for one..and turned it down..looking for the right job....depaul looking at him as well..he could bring great assistants with him..and i dont care what baron davis says....

Honestly, of the candidates being tossed around (Skinner, Baron, McCaffery), Lavin is probably the best name.  But it still amazes me how absolutely botched this entire process has been.  We fire a coach, proclaim that we're going to pay top dollar for a big name, and possibly end up with someone who hasn't coached since 2003?  Was there a plan or any form of due diligence by Monasch on this?

What really bothers me was this process was supposed to bring some optimism to all of the fans of this program.  We've suffered 6 years of incompetence with Roberts and one would figure that we could look forward to bringing in someone top notch who could fix the situation and get St. John's back to an elite level.  They get all our hopes up with the Donovan talk and end up offering less than what he is already making at Florida.  Then, they turn their focus on Hewitt, who has a career ACC record of 67-93.  We get turned down by Hewitt and before we can even reach out to the next candidate (Greenberg), he re-signs with VT.  Meanwhile, our fail safe candidate (Pecora) cannot wait any longer and heads over to the Bronx to sign with Fordham.  Then, they bring in Skinner, whose career ACC record is 106-106 and the farthest he has taken BC in 13 years is the Sweet Sixteen.  Then, they bring in McCaffery and almost immediately after his interview, he turns his attention to Iowa and heads over there.

Seriously, what the hell is going on?  Is it that this school is really that undesirable?  Or is it because a lot of these coaches have taken notice of this unorganized process and been turned off by it?

Lavin would be a great hire.  The standards at UCLA are insane.  Howland, who I consider one of the best coaches in the country, is already getting a lot of heat after taking them to three Final Fours!  That should tell you all you need to know right there.

My only concern with Lavin is that he has not been recruiting for the last seven years.  All of our other candidates have been, and have active ties and built relationships with the current
recruits.  He would have to really load his staff up with some connected NYC guys. 

I would really like this hire if McCaffrey is out of the picture.
