Lavin told us last what we already know about Dunlap.
That he is being considered for the Oregon job, but he's trying to bring
him on board. He also mentioned Chiles, and talked about his experience.

He didn't mention Mo Hicks. At least not in his speech.

Wow...sounds good.  Let's go Mr. Hicks!  Time to bring college basketball back to NY!
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Mo would help with Lamb too, as he also coaches the Gauchos.

Very true. It's a long shot at best for Coach Lavin getting in this late in the game but if he impresses him today and hires Mo Hicks in a couple of days, you never know.

Just me speculating, but is there a chance that Mo Hicks is there with him today? I thought I saw (maybe on this thread) that Mo wasn't with the Gauchos this weekend.  Just a thought.

Boo Williams is such a huge tournament.  Wouldn't he be there for that?  It doesn't get too much bigger.

So he could be the DOBO but not an assistant and the kid could still sign?

Yes....  Remember Baylor hired John Wall's AAU coach, as DOBO, in an attempt to lure Wall.

Hicks runs the Gauchos but doesnt coach? Would this rule pertain to directors of AAU?

http://recruitlook.com/blog/id_184-ncaa-prohibits-hiring-coaches-linked-to-recuirts.html

The NCAA passed a rule that college basketball programs can no longer hire AAU coaches to "noncoaching" roles.  The rule prohibits schools from hiring anybody associated with a basketball recruit to a noncoaching role for a two year period before or after the athlete enrolls.

This is the latest attempt by the NCAA to clean up college basketball recruiting.  In years' past, schools would hire AAU coaches as either the video coordinator or the head of basketball operations only to lure in that AAU coach's top high school recruit.

The proposal passed by the council must be affirmed by the Division I board of directors.

I'm not even sure that this rule takes effect for this year.  Also, like you pointed out, he doesn't even coach so I doubt that he woudl be subject to this rule.  Do you really think we'd be going after him if we couldn't get Jack or Lamb b/c of it?  It took a 30 secodn phone call to the STJ compliance office who then called the NCAA and got approval.

Mo Hicks would be a fantastic hire.  Rice and the Gauchos in one.  Wow.

Unfortunately, nothing in recruiting is a sure thing.
Kimani Young is a nice story of a reformed life, but they hired him, at least in part, to get access to his great class of Pinkston, Collier, and Williams and it didn't pay off.

Hicks would've been a great hire under Roberts to get access to players like Walker, Scott, Lamb, Kelly, Jennings, etc. These things can be cyclical and the Gauchos pipeline isn't as deep as it was.

The local program that is just stacked this year and, as long as we're not going to recruit nationally, Lavin has to be all over are the Playaz-Kyle Anderson, Jr., Desmond Hubert, Randall, Myles Davis and Mack. If they are going to pay a coach for access, this is certainly one-right now.

At Rice, Hicks has got Jack, Saunders, and Suber.
With the Gauchos, he's got Derrick Wilson (who I doubt will come to St. John's from Hotchkiss), Shaquille Stokes (who's now a Lincoln player-see Morton, Tiny) and sometimes Omar Calhoun (the city's best sophomore, but let's say don't bet the house on him coming here). The next generation, the 16s, got destroyed by Baltimore Elite in the first round of the Boo playoffs.

Hinds-will play for either the Westchester Hawks or the Metro Hawks

Mike Taylor-Metro Hawk (HoopScoop #1 Junior in NYC)-got smoked by a kid, Levi Randolph, from Alabama on Saturday night-he's got to be no more than 6'1", but at least he can shoot that baseline jumper

The MetroHawk kid, Sidiki Johnson, who verballed early w/ Arizona, would probably be the best junior prospect in NYC. He certainly played the best of any of the NYC kids. If they could get Book out of that Arizona program, they could probably get him to switch.

The positive is we now have a coach that can recruit nationally and, although the talent locally may be down (compared to what it has been historically), there is plenty of available talent out there in America. The country is loaded and that Nike affiliation won't hurt. I certainly hope that Coach Lavin will be prepared to go to battle for some top 50 talent, be it from Oakland, Georgia, DMV, Houston, Detroit, or NJ.

Lavin mentioned at the reception on Friday that 'we have to cast a net around the Metro area and not let kids get away'  BUT 'he wont ignore the rest of the country.'

He mentioned his ties to midwest and old California ties.  Hines and his ties to Maryland area.  Dunlap coaching all over.

And not just nationally. Although Jamaica might not be a preferred destination for a kid from Chicago or LA, New York City would certainly be a desirable location for high profile international players, especially considering Lavin's track record for putting players in the NBA.

Good posts by Sleaveless and Moose....  I think when it's all said and done that Lavin is gonna cover all bases when it comes to recruiting on a national-level.

Lavin will work his ties to the midwest and west (especially, in California), as I hear Lavin is still well-perceived by the high school and AAU guys out in California.  I think Chiles will work the NYC/NJ area.  Hines can work the DMV area....  And, hopefully Dunlap comes in and he's able to work the Great Northwest, as well as the west coast.

Last, but not least....  We can have Lavin come in and seal the deal, whether it's from NYC-to-abroad.  I believe this still will shape up well for us once the staff is finalized.

That's really the pitch.

Coincidentally, I was talking with the father of a Team Takeover player who indicated that their 7'2," 290lb center, Tisordan Omogbehin (the kids call him Jordan O. or Big Jordan), was hoping to go to college in an international city and Georgetown, who hasn't yet offered the 2011 Nigerian import, was making their case for nearby D.C.

Those old NorCal ties may pay some dividends in 2012.
The Oakland Soldiers are loaded for that year.
Remember the name Brandon Ashley- a 6'9" pf, already goes to a Catholic school (another oft-used negative recruiting tool), had a double-double in the state championship game, played very well this weekend against the 17s, will fly up the recruiting rankings

Can he run at all?

Always thought that instead of battling for (often overhyped) NYC-region prospects, some school should get into the international scene.  European/ Turkish/ Israeli kids seem to want to stay and play pro and in feeder leagues, but some Aussies, West Africans, and South Americans want to train in the states.

Was the Nike Hoop Summit an event college coaches could scout/ recruit at?
