Leadership doesn't necessarily have to come from a Senior or even an upperclassman.

Tom Izzo is one of the most respected basketball people in the world. There must have been a real reason he kicked a Senior, who has contributed to two Final Four appearances, off his team.

Like I said, I will pass.

Sure there was a reason but there is no reason why he can't learn from that. He's worth investigating.

Let me ask you this....

If Allen admitted fault and vowed to change his ways would you take a chance on him for a season?

Everyone deserves 2nd chances.  I'm all for that and I think everyone is.  However I don't think we're in a position yet to be taking chances like that.  I also think it might hurt the chances of getting some of these studs if they fear playing time might be in danger from a guy who is a senior and has played at a high level like Michigan State and the Final Four.

He can admit his wrongdoing and promise change but I still think I would rather focus on other options.

So you'd rather take a flyer on an unproven JUCO who most likely couldn't get into a D-1 school due to grades? I mean I'd rather go with a Final Four starter imo. If it fails its one season and you're done. Its not like we'll be forced to play him.

Where did I say that I want an unproven JUCO?

Thanks

Aren't all JUCO's unproven? They haven't played at this level. That's my only point.

Where is anyone talking about unproven jucos over chris allen, other than you dave?

Chris allen should not be our first signing. Let's see what impact frosh we can get.  I'd be cool with chris allen if we already had 6-7 commits but I think moose and pmg are right.  Not really the best way to go right now given our situation.  I pass.

I also agree, I dont want another schools problem, but if he WERE to come,
it would be this month -sept '10 using the last '10 scholly, making him eligible fall '11

I fully understand that but for all intents and purposes he'd be the "first" 2011 recruit, for better, or more likely, worse.

Ultimately we're gonna have to get some JUCO kids to break up the disparity in scholarships. I thought I was just stating the obvious.

It's not like Allen would have to be the premiere signee or even first. He'd be like what Jermaine Maybank was for KSU after he left St. John's. He didn't play much but he was a big contributor in a few games.

Hmm the Mayor Fred Hoiberg is after Allen? Interesting. One of my best friends is the DOBO there.

Hoiberg needs to find talent wherever he can.

Also, with Lavin getting looks from some really high-major guys, he might not need many JUCOs to balance things out. 1-2 next year, yes.  But after that, if he brings in 7 freshman, one might just transfer; and if he brings in Jakarr Sampson or Nash, both will play with the idea of 1 or 2 and done.

I'm going to do a little change of pace.  I was told today again that Izzo and Lavin are pretty tight.  Lavin called a lot of MSU games while at ESPN with Brent Musberger.  Thinking about it I'm sure Izzo gave his sign off to Lavin to pursue Allen.  That all being said Allen was still on campus today shooting baskets in the gym today.

I'd love to sign this kid.

If we are going to lose any recruit because of him, than it really isn't the type of recruit we want.  Honestly, we have the last amount of returning players of just about any team in the country.  It'd be nice to actually win some games in 2011-2012.  It would also be amazing to have a kid of his caliber practice and push the current seniors.

Although we are on a bunch of good recruits, it doesnt appear we are in great shape with SG who could make an impact on the big east level in their freshman year.  If Nick Johnson were on his way i'd say forget it but that doesnt appear to be the case.

You could take a flyer on an experienced player like Allen for a year to start and stabilize the position.  Then that allows Lavin to get a big time SG in the 2012 class, which according to Jerry Meyer is the deepest position in the class.

Obviously if he was dismissed for a serious offense then it's a different story.

Was told by someone not on STJ staff or associated with St. John's program that after meeting with Allen they aren't worried about character issues at all recruiting him and that he's a good kid.
