Obviously, there were a lot of negatives to be taken from tonight's game.  But, IMO the student section stepped up at the end of tonight's game.  They were loud and I think it helped.  The constant noise while the Bonnies were on offense definitely made a difference.  At the end of the day, a loss is still a loss, but I feel that we made some improvements in noise level at tonight's game.

Students I have no issue with.

But why did it take until the END of the game for the place to get loud otherwise.

I've been to a number of games at other schools this season. It's amazing to see how other shcool's fans clap and cheer for an offensive rebound yet St. John's fans.......nothing........

I saw the crowd get into the game a bit more at Wagner but still not even close.

I just think there is a great disconnect between student/alumni/fan and school. The gap is closing but ultimately its still there. One of the biggest reason's I created Johnny Jungle was to bridge that gap because there should be no reason for it.

I totally agree.  Obviously, as the team improves in the coming years, it'll attract more support.  As I walk around campus at this present time, I try my best to spread the word about the games and to convince people to attend.  I think some of them genuinely don't want to go because they think it is "cool" not to support the school's team.  Besides the improvement of the team, I really don't know what other solution there is.  Is it more advertisement on campus? More events?  Whatever it is, I'd be glad to be a part of it if I just knew how to do it.

I think the only fair assessment of the situation is to accept that St.John's fans are assh*les.

I was standing at the end of the game, and in my section, I was the only one. I wish I could have tasered every single middle aged fat guy in my section.

But I don't own a taser. I think it would be great if instead of a senseless bird, we could have a prison warden be our mascot, and when he sees fans just sitting there, he could taser them.

Not only would it keep fans active and cheering, but the crowd could get to see a fat middle aged guy get tasered-and that is certain to get the crowd jumping.

Yea I agree with you Redmen.  In classes whenever the bball team is mentioned the whole class usually laughs as if the team is a joke.

Part of it comes from the team being bad, part of it comes from the amount of foreign students in the school who just don't have time for it and part of it comes from us being mainly a commuter school so people feel as if they just go to school there and have different favorite college bball teams.  Another aspect of the commuter school thing is, if you want to go to the game and you take public transportation to school you can't even bring your bag into the game so a lot of commuters don't even have a chance to go to games.

I also think not having a football team hurts a little.  Another factor that I think has something to do with it is that most people come to St. John's as a safety school and aren't really all that excited to go there that much and are there more out of necessity and that hurts the spirit you have for your school when you are looking to transfer from the second you step on campus.

My hope is that in the coming years with the team's improvements, we may be able to attract a different type of student.  A more sports oriented student.

When you have some alumni and fans that b*tch and moan about students yelling "sucks", that should tell you a lot about why students feel discouraged.  I have heard from students that some people within the school are also overly politically correct when it comes to fan participation at games.

Let students have some fun and some alumni need to stop being such curmudgeons.  People need to stop sitting on their hands.  I was at MSG tonight for the Jimmy V and EVERY Syracuse fan in the building (young and old) was standing up and clapping from opening tip until Cuse made their first field goal (a tradition).

Theo, you can't compare Syracuse fans to SJU fans. Syracuse fans care about their program and their school.

SJ fans are the most fair-weather fans in NY. So much so that a school 5 hours north of Manhattan can claim to be "NY's team" -and the worst part: it's true.

To me, it does nobody any good to just continue to complain about the fans.  Rather, how do we begin to fix it?

students do ok, we take alot of grief form alot of people about not much at all... but at least the schools giving free tickets to some games, that seems to be helping student attendance

Dear Santa

All I'm really asking for this year is a taser. Just get me that taser so I can start tasering all the St Johns fans sitting in their seats during games. I've been a good man this year

There is no doubt that you students stepped it up big time and made a crucial difference in the outcome of the game, what with your screaming, catcalls, and clever chants. For example, SB missed 4 of 22 free throws, which is a direct credit to your hard work and nipple painting. No doubt if you hadn't been so effective the Bonnies might have won by a dozen or more. For that effort, and on behalf of SJ fans everywhere, I'd like to award you the game testicle. Er ball, the game ball. Congratulations.

A number of years back I was at an Alumni hall game with Mrs. Abbatiello.  I was cheering loudly, standing up at appropriate moments and complaining to her about the quiet, uninvolved manner of the fans sitting around me.  Finally, having heard enough of my crap, Mrs. A goes, "would you rather they didn't come at all and the team played to a completely empty arena?".

I haven't complained a word about how the other fans choose to spectate an athletic contest since.

My personal thought is that for a school to have a great tradition it takes years to create. At St Johns i think there are many disconnects with many of the programs and the students. I always hear stories of athetics not wanting to work with some of the student organizations and also hear its sometimes the same the other way. I believe one day we can be compared to SU students or even Duke but we are far from that. Those programs did not get their over night. But we also have to look around and come to terms of where we live. We have teams in all major sports and unless we are beating the number 1 ranked team we will be 4th or 5th in the sports news. In other places the college team is all they have. Go to any of the 4 major sports around here and you see more people in business suits then jerseys. This has always upset me. I think right now there are some die hard students who go to each game and root their best but there was never a solid leader in the past. These major schools we talk about, the freshman come and the seniors and juniors have stuff organized and make the sports event the main attraction. Here we need to give tickets away to fill seats and when you are giving away seats, that means they just coming to the game to fill time.

Hey, I resemble those remarks...
And just to set the record straight, quite a few of us fat middle aged fans attend all home games and DO stand and clap and cheer! Just look into section 4 next game.

PS I hope Santa does NOT bring him a taser this Christmas. Would not make for a pretty sight.

8 million New Yorkers chose not to attend the game last night and it wasn't a sell out.  Complaining about the 3800 who actually put in the time, $ and effort to make it to the game because they didn't stand enough or weren't loud enough is ridiculous.

If 6008 or whatever the heck it is nowadays showed up the crowd support would be just fine.  Hollywood specifically mentioned the crowds response in a positive vein in the post-game.

I have said this before but when we were really good or just ok according to Foad, old Alumni Hall was still as quiet as a library. When I was a little kid I would occasionally go during the Mullin era and I was shocked at the lack of atmosphere there. Around the same time Wagner College had a player named Terrance Bailey who led the nation in scoring. The team was mediocre but the old tiny Wagner gym would be jumping and was a much better atmosphere then at SJU even during the Mullin/Berry years. The real test will be the Garden. Even if the crowds were often split even during our peak seasons, when we were good it was a great crowd. Bottom line is we only really play bottom tier BE teams and the sisters of the poor  on campus, so who cares what the crowd is like and I really don't think it affects the outcome. Just makes it a dreary place to watch a game.
