Brooklyn (NY) Abraham Lincoln combo guard Isaiah Whitehead was identified as a Syracuse target early on for the class of 2014. The Orange are not alone though in the recruitment of the five star prospect.

The Recruitscoop.com's Alex Kline has the latest.

"The 2014 guard has had an up and down year on the court. He wants to take some official visits after the year, and those would include Syracuse, Louisville and UCLA. Those three are the ones who are really liking him."

The Orange seemed like a frontrunner for Whitehead, but Kline does not think Orange fans should get to comfortable.

"I wouldn't consider him a lock to Syracuse at all, though."

Stay tuned to the Rivals.com network for more on Whitehead throughout the recruiting process.

I could see him following Doron Lamb footsteps there. Otherwise I see him going to Zona or Cuse.

Should we stop pursuing if we haven't already? Any chance we could get him, It thought the mom liked STJ?

And in there lies one of our major problems in getting the best or second best player in NYC on a year-in, year-out basis.  One of the reasons why I'm shocked when people get upset if we lose a top guy from our backyard.  Looks like we are 2-4 thus far in the Lavin regime, which isn't that bad by any stretch.  And getting Carrington would help make up for missing out on CM and Whitehead in 2014.

The difference now is that while Norm would lose out on pretty much all of the top NYC players, not bring in a similarly high-ranked player from outside NY, and be stuck fighting for lower tier players from the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region, Lavin has gone out thus far and gotten top guys from all over.  Hope that continues, and that we continue to target selected top players from NYC/Jersey and land a few.

In addition to Whitehead we have been mentioned with

#3. Mudiay
#34. Aaaron
#37. Okonoboh
#58. Terrell
#65. Chukwu
#69. Jackson

Some more than others, no doubt.

would you say that we are seriously targeting any of those guys, though?  and of those we are seriously targeting, who is seriously considering st johns?  i feel like the answer is zero.

I dont know.  There is no doubt that we have not been out there or mentioned much for the 13 or 14 classes.  I don't know whats going on to be honest.  Yes in 14 Carrington is the name we have been most mentioned with and watching and he's not listed there.

We're still playing catch-up.  I don't like that.

Latest Bossi interview with Whitehead.  Mentions SJU has one of the 7 recruiting him.

The five-star prospect's schedule has kept him from taking visits this winter but schools have been plenty active recruiting him. Whitehead noted Syracuse, Louisville, Kentucky, UCLA, Florida, Miami and St. John's as the programs most involved.

On Syracuse being the reported leader:

Whitehead also addressed constant rumors that Syracuse is his leader. Asked if the Orange are his leader, he stopped short of saying that but explained why many have put them out front.

"No, not exactly," said Whitehead when asked if Syracuse leads. "People say that because my favorite player is Melo and that's my dream school since I was little."
