What if.....
« on: March 07, 2011, 11:04:29 PM »
Norm was never fired? There has been a lot of that talk lately. Mostly from Norm. Well let's hop in Doc Brown's Delorean and see what would have happened:
NOVEMBER
SJU opens the season at ST Mary's with a lineup of Evans, Burrell, DJ, Horne and Boothe. SJU loses 76- 68. Steve Lavin doing commentary for ESPN claims he really likes SJU 6th and 7th men Dwight Hardy and Justin Brownlee. Norm blames the loss on the time difference."My guys didn't know whether they were eating breakfast, Lunch or Dinner."
SJU finishes the month by coming in 3rd in the Alaska shootout. Norm blames a fear of Polar Bears on the loss. "Both Malik's spent more time looking over their shoulders to make sure they weren't eaten than concentrating on the plays."
Record 3-2

DECEMBER
SJU loses to Northwestern in the Holiday tournament. Norm blames last minute Christmas shopping for the loss." Even though our school is in NY we stayed at a hotel across from the Garden for some reason and I couldn't keep my players out of Macy's."
Record 7-4

JANUARY
January sees the Johnnies play a brutal schedule of 7 ranked teams. SJU loses all seven culminating in a 92-78 blowout to Duke.
Norm blames Mike Jarvis. "I inherited this schedule."
Record 9-11

FEBRUARY
After knocking off Rutgers SJU visits Pauley Pavilion. SJU loses 86 74. The game is relatively close despite UCLA shooting 65 more free throws than SJU. Becuase everyone fouled out Dwight Hardy goes off for 36 points. ESPN announcer Lavin claims" I really like that kid." UCLA frosh Dwayne Polee scores 16. Meanwhile Norm's lone recruit Earvin Lawrence scores 2 and has 8 to's. Earvo as he is called really impress coach Roberts. "I think I am going to have to find Earvo some more minutes. He really wears that headband well. He is starting to remind me of his brother." The next game in a loss to UCONN Earvo is elevated to 6th man and Hardy scores 6 pts in 14 minutes.
Record 11-17

MARCH
SJU goes 1-1 to finish the season 12-18. Norm blames his team's age."What do you expect? My guys are just too old. They were constantly falling asleep during night games. Wait till next year when I have 10 Frosh.  I know my incoming class isn't highly regarded, but I really expect big things from Earvo's two cousins Enis and Eli."

Let's get back in that Delorean, this alternate reality sucks!

That post was too good for Norm Roberts.

I understand as part of his job on SNY he has to comment on us, but it is really becoming pathetic how he keeps interjecting himself into the story. It is disrespectful towards Lavin and incredibly delusional.

You can speak about the great recruiting class, about the excitement in New York, about the national relevance, about the excellent work of Steve Lavin and staff, about the involvement of Mike Repole, about the improvements of the players, about the awards of some players, about the increase of fans, about ...

But it is really becoming pathetic how you only speak about our former coach.

I think we'd be have an easier time letting it go if he just went far far away.

It's like we just got divorced, and he bought a house on the same block.

I am just responding to the constent" give Norm credit" crap we have been seeing and hearing.

The real question is why you choose to stalk me like a school girl. Did you miss me? I have to say I am flattered but I do not swing that way. Unless of course Gonzalo is a girl and looks like Penelope Cruz? But either way I would still have to decline.

We are sju is dead on balls right. Norm never once took the blame for 6 bad seasons, and now that the kids have a coach with a game plan, he's raising his hand and reminding us that "we were right on the cusp last year"

This team would be 16-14 if that nice person was still here.
I am so grateful that he's gone. He should find something else to do with his life. Basketball is not for him. Maybe theirs a job where taking no accountability for anything you do is a good thing?

wasju--you wax poetic and prophetic in your "what if" scenario.  A writer like Jeff Greenfield who has just had a book published dealing with politics in the same way.  Amazing how each can be funny and scary at the same time.

I wish you could enhance on the recruioting and give us his 10 recruits.

people talk about this year and norm roberts i think they would be where marquette is now... maybe.... the recruiting would still be horrible so it would be a 4 year cycle of bad bad bad bubble team bad bad bad bubble team... now we will have top players coming every year so we will be competitive every year
