It's not smart for the kid or the school to take a NLI if his academics are in question. If everything looks good in the spring then he'll sign then. I'm hoping to head to CT tomorrow to see him.

I'm going up for the early games.  Let me know if you head up there.

Academics per se are not the issue from what I hear wrt Wood.

Plus if a player signs an NLI and fails to qualify via the NCAA or even if the institution itself fails to admit that player by definition the player's NLI becomes null and void.  In other words it is as if they never signed one to begin with.

The evidence with that of course are the 3 players that failed to qualify for SJU.  By definition their NLI's became null and void.  All 3 are free to go somewhere else and in fact are even free to sign with another Big East school (which is why Providence is recruiting JaKarr).  Under normal conditions if a player is "released" from their NLI from a Big East school (say Ron Roberts from SJU in sprinig of 2010) then they are forbidden to go and play for any other Big East school.

From scout.com at the NPS:

*Darrick Wood scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in a loss to Hargrave Military Academy. Wood scored majority of his points in transition. When motivated he’s a guy that can lock up the opposition.

Saw Woods play the last two games and from what I saw he has the potential to be a solid point guard for us. He reminds me a lot of Shabazz Napier. Has great ball control, makes good decisions/passes, and utilizes his body efficiently to create distance between him and his man. Excellent point guard skills.

If he's a great ball handler, I'm surprised that Syracuse isn't interested in him.

first time ive heard him and point guard mentioned together. Good to hear he has a nice handle. How did his shot look and does he look like hes getting any stronger?

Yes, he plays the Point pretty often for Bridgton Academy. He could use 15+ lbs but he has a B/B+ outside game, can hit the three, take his man to the basket, and is a pretty good rebounder. What impressed me the most is his self control when running the point (always calm and under control). I think he would be of a more valuable asset for us at the Point more so than the Guard position. Like I said, reminds me of Shabazz Napier. Considering the lack of depth at the point, he is a blessing in disguise.

I recall you being on point with the eligibilty news.  Being that you saw Bridgton just wondering if you heard anything regarding Amir getting here in December.  Thanks!

Lets just say all smiles when it comes to Amir  ;)  Pending per NCAA as we all know how they are   But it looks all good so far.

Funny you mention it.  He reminds me a lot of the kid Michael Carter-Williams who Cuse signed last year.  Lavin loves these long kids who are great athletes and can play multiple spots.  In Wood's case, he can play the 1-3 spots.

Got to see some of his game last Saturday. Bouncy, long and has a better outside shot then I originally though. I really like his game & am glad we have him. Will need to put on some weight as superstar05 said and I also think his defense will need to be improved. Took a few gambles which as we know with our freshman can really hurt. Also love his competitiveness and fire, plays the game very hard!

Link here to the Bridgton vs Hargrave game.  Follow successive numbers for the rest of the game.

2 | Bridgton Academy ( Maine ) Vs Hargrave Military Academy ( Virginia )

Both guys are exactly the type Lavin recruits.  Amir certainly more of a wing type.  Wood is likely a guard in college.  Love Woods spring and range as well as handle with both hands.  IMO Woods upside is excellent with his tools.  Real good with the ball in his hands.  Easy to break presses with these types.  Amir also excellent, just different. Needs a little more work with ball I his hands but really aggressive defender and attacks the rim.  I like both.  Great to have Amir this season.

Just as long as he doesn't leave his balls on the rim. Syracuse doesn't stand for that.

just watched the game and agree with what you said MCN. Really impressed with Woods handle and jumper. We really need a player like him, plus he is a blur in the open court and has the length and athleticism you need to play for lavin. Amir is a jumping jack who is great around the basket and also pretty good in the open court. He will be able to grab a board and go with it. His jumper needs some work however and I think his defense has been overrated a little bit. He will be good in the zone but he looks to get beat a lot playing man to man
