I asked some guys on the Maryland boards about him when he committed...they didn't seem to too impressed.  Said he was a good player and possibly could develop to a contributor by his junior year.

I d like to get him back if he would be eligible next year. He is a shooter and that is one of our needs.

He was filling it up this year...but it sounds like he is an academic risk we're not wiling to take

http://blog.northstarbball.com/2012/01/27/after-decommitting-from-st-johns-darrick-wood-is-taking-his-time.aspx

On Thursday night, Northstar Basketball caught up with Wood to discuss where things stand with his recruitment and he provided a list of eight schools in the mix. The long wing listed Washington, UConn, Texas, Memphis, Providence, Maryland, Oklahoma State, and St. John's, claiming offers from all of them.

As for a commitment, Wood said he will choice will come "most likely in the spring," and he talked about what factors he is looking for in a school.

"Great coaching staff. Family setting and a good area," Wood said of the factors he will consider.

Although he lists no favorites at this point, he did say that "lately Washington" has been the school coming at him the hardest.

The recruiting process:
“I want to take my recruiting process slow, I rushed it with St. John’s and it wasn’t the right fit for me or my family.” Wood said about his de-commitment from St. John’s. He now plans to really evaluate all of the schools that are recruiting him and pick the one that fits what he is looking for in a school.

“I want to go to a school that has a good basketball program and a great environment,” Wood said.
The schools that are recruiting him are Washington, Texas, UCONN, Memphis, Maryland, Providence, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, and Oregon. He doesn’t plan to narrow down this list until after the season. He will then work on setting up visits and seeing some of the schools that interest him.

As for what school is recruiting him the hardest right now, Wood says it is Washington because of Coach Raphael Chillious. Texas is a very close second in terms of recruiting him the hardest.

Looks like we'll have to look elsewhere four a third string shooting guard. I guess the guard "branch" of the STJ roster got a little crowded for him.

Can't take any more chances on kids who don't apply themselves academically. He should go to Memphis. There should be no problem getting in there.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  We were told Wood decommited because his grades we'rent in order.  That he may need to be a partial qualifier.   Well..... most of those schools are in conferences that don't allow partial qualifiers.

The timing of Wood's decommitment tells me all I need to know.  Wood keeps in touch with Gathers and guys on the roster.  Branch was speaking with Gathers and at least Harrison during the process.  Wood caught wind that the Johnnies were getting another guard ranked above him and with more experience.  The chance for Wood to see minutes at the point vanished, and the Johnnies already have Greene, Harrison, Garrett, Pointer, and Mo for the 2-3 spots.

Per Scout.com....

Darrick Wood thought he was going to play his college basketball at St. John's.
But the 6-foot-5 wing prospect recently backed away from his pledge and has since become one of the most pursued small forwards in the country.

"Recruiting is going pretty good," Wood told Scout.com. "I plan on waiting until the end of the season to set up my visits."

Wood, who is finishing up his high school career at North Bridgton (Maine) Academy, said the schools recruiting him the hardest are Washington, Texas, Maryland, Memphis and Oklahoma State.

Wood, who is known as one of the top athletes in the 2012 class, never took an official visit to St. John's, so he has five official visits remaining.

No way - they've got to be off on that - unless he's 6'6" or 6'7" since decommit!

Wood alledgedly says we remain his first choice. Academics may dictate otherwise.

It would seem that his de-commitment is more based on academic issues than not wanting to attend SJU-as some have already mentioned here.

Darrick Wood (Bridgton 2012) – After struggling in his first outing and having his moments the second time around, Wood fully showed off what he is capable of in the third go around at the National Prep School invitational on Sunday. He made jumpers early which got his whole offensive game going and by the end of the first half it was clear he was in for a big day. Wood gets excellent elevation on his jump shot allowing him to shoot it even when guarded because he can simply rise over his defender. This same leaping ability makes him a beast in transition where he made multiple acrobatic plays above the rim. My only knock is Wood’s tendency to let his emotions get the best of him on the court as he sometimes allows missed shots or perceived fouls that go un called to stay with him for long stretches. Regardless of that his athleticism and scorer’s mentality make him a perfect fit as a high major shooting guard.

Looks like we are still very much in play for him. Although some make it sound like he may not be eligible. Would be good to have him back on board if he is eligible though.

Darrick Wood (Bridgton Academy 2012) – The former St. John’s commit decommitted about a month ago citing that he just wanted to take more time to make the best decision for him and his family. Steve Lavin’s health was a non factor in the decision according to Wood. As it stands Wood still cites St. John’s as the leader in his recruitment but is also mulling offers from Connecticut, Washington, Texas, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, Maryland, Georgetown, and Providence. He plans to visit Washington, Texas, and Maryland after the high school season and said that aside from St John’s no one is standing out to him at this point.
