I think labeling either Greene or D'angelo the "point guard" is overrated in our offense.  They're both combo guards, and actually I think Lavin prefers that.  He wants multiple ball handlers.

Neither of our guards (I don't count Stith) played particularly well today, that's the problem.  Regardless of who we label as the primary ball handler.  Greene, especially, was less aggressive driving and creating opportunities today.
But that will happen when you play a team who can turn guys away from the paint

Harrison went to the rim more aggressively than PG, but D'angelo needs to knock down some of those open looks he had today.

Either way, the guard play wasn't great today.   Although we did limit our number of turnovers, which is a plus.

In a game like this, Harrison needs to be incredibly hot, or we have no shot.
There is no room for a 4-16 shooting night against a ranked team. If he goes 12-16, we win.

I think he needs to running the point ala Hardy. Greene isn't ready yet for FT pg duty.
It's not fair to have him going up against the best point guards in the nation.

Definitely true.   Shooting was our problem today.   Even with UCONNs length and hot shooting, we had a ton of wide open shots today.  We shot 24 threes.  If we even made 25% of them it would have been a different game.  And D'angelo was a big part of that.

Some poor shooting for during the first half really doomed the game. As well as the poor defense on three pointers, which really has been a problem all year.

I think overall they played well in the second half it's just hard to win when the other team is hitting everything and when they don't shoot j's they're ally ooping over us.

Things could be worse. But depth has proved to be a problem against upper level teams.

Uconn just made a very high percentage of their shots and have upperclassmen and depth.

Upperclassmen and depth?

UConn starters: a junior, two sophomores and two freshmen.
And the three bench players who played more than 4 minutes were two sophomores and a freshman.

Actually, you left out Oriakhi who is a senior and a starter I believe.  Only reason roscoe smith didn't start was because of injury.  I should have been clearer and you are correct, not upperclassmen, but returning players.  Most of the team are sophs, but that one year makes a HUGE difference.  They also have excellent freshmen and yes, plenty of depth, especially in the frontcourt.  I think SJU will be monstrous next season if we bring in a 5 or 6 man class of talented freshmen.  At this point, I have no idea where those players are going to come from though.  I trust Lavin but he's behind with this class and it will be no easy feat to turn it into a top notch recruiting class.  It is imperative to land two big men and a good PG in this class.

I don't mind all the 3's,we go 7-24,its a different game

It's really not St. John's game.

Harrison and Greene should average 4 attempts a game. Harkless 2. Pointer 1. Random 1.

That's 12 a game.

Dave, you shoot 3's when you are down double-digits even if it is not our game. Two or three were "in-and-out" -they go in and Uconn misses 2 and it is a much closer game.
BTW, I did not follow this thread.....I never do since I am usually at the games, but I just noticed that you banned MJDinkins!?! Quite honestly, for all the crappy posts by a couple of your regulars here you never banned them....although removing Baldi's Mod privileges was commendable:)
I just want the best for your site and not have it become another BigEastBoards with 4 posters left:)

There's no rule saying you have to shoot 3's if you're down double digits. You get to the rack and make a living at the line.

For someone who didn't follow this thread you seemed to pick up on the most minor of details. Please reserve your opinions about other posters to yourself. Lets talk about hoops

Stith needs to facilitate the offense better when he's in. He's done it a few times and he's been aggressive attacking the basket. He can't be timid on the floor.

Offensively he hasn't been as bad as you might think. He's made 4-7 attempts from 3 and is shooting 45% from the floor.

Needs to be peskier on defense and get more steals. He was pesky last year but much more reserved this year. Not sure if
by design?

He's not leading them on the court, and as a pg that's his job. I'd love nothing more than to see him contribute, but Dave, I think you're inventing it. He's 4-7 from downtown. But he passes up shots that a guy like him needs to take and make.  Has he made a meaningful basket or pass once this entire season? I honestly don't think so. The staff needs to get more out of him.

If you look at the guards on Iona, Manhattan, Hofstra, Wagner, SBrook are all better than him.
Exactly and we should have recruited one or two of those guys as insurance.  Our top of the line recruiting formula just isn't practical.

Any recruiting formula last year was going to be impractical. They had to recruit an entire team. Its not as simple as it may sound.

Agree!  I stated that 9 scholarships was good and bad.
