Do we have a legitimate shot with this kid? I heard somewhere that he only had St. John's on his list as a courtesy for how hard we have been recruiting him, and in reality we don't have a shot. Any truth to this?

FWIW, I feel that way, but I did not think we would get Obekpa. We'll see.

Courtesy to who?  It's no "courtesy" to keep a school on your list and have that coach continue to recruit you for naught as a "courtesy". Does that make any sense?  Pretty sure the courteous thing to do if we weren't involved is to drop the school from your list.  Lavin doesn't want to waste his time either.  That said, Lavin usually gets his guys.  I still think we'll be players for Martin and/or Lawrence down the stretch.

My agreement with the post reflects my opinion we probably are not getting Martin, not the "courtesy" piece. I am basing my opinion on feedback from a BBall coach in Martin's area. Hope he's wrong.

I'll say one thing though.  Often coaches in some of these local areas outside of huge metros like NYC  remain very centric from what I've heard.  I wouldn't be surprised if a local coach from somewhere down south thought he was just humoring us.  They probably expect everybody to choose LSU as well much like Gathers.

I'm not saying that is the case, but local pressures in places like New Orleans are much greater than they are here.  I too hope that coach was wrong.

As kob indicated this is not a courtesy recruitment.  Lavs does not play games.

Serious interest between SJU and Martin.

UCLA figures to have 4 McDonalds All Americans at teh 4/5 next year.  Josh Smith and the Wear Twins will be Seniors, and Tony Parker will be a sophmore.  I hope Martin's decision comes down to SJU or UCLA -  and  P/T wise, SJU would seem the likely winner in that scenario....

If we are able to land Jarrell Martin and Rysheed Jordan in this class, it would really be an amazing class.  Wanna see Lavs A, B, C it..

From an ESPN Insider article up today..

"Only Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma State have either been to his home to do a visit or have plans to visit. Bama, LSU, Oklahoma State, St. John’s, UCLA, Texas A&M and Louisville are on his list of offers. None of them have a campus visit date confirmed for Martin."

"Martin can’t take an official visit until he takes a standardized test, be it the SAT or ACT, and that won’t happen until Oct. 27. He hasn’t seen any campuses, so it’s proper to refer to his recruitment as being in its infancy stages. Martin won’t decide until next spring. "

Love the fact that Lav is all over with the recruitment of Jordan, Wainwright and Martin but are we now writing off Jermaine Lawerence and Chris Mc. ? I always said as much as kids want to leave NYC there are as many that would love to come here and play and Lav has truly turned us into a national program.

I don't believe that that is the case at all.

I don't know.  That'd be as crazy as thinking you could get Orlando Sanchez and Jakarr Sampson to come in the same class.   Just pursuing one woulda meant the other was written off!  :)  :D   ;D   ;)

We did have more 'ships to offer last year, the way i see it we may only have a few spots open next year or two....either way super happy with the direction we're headed in.

Think there's a good chance we have several rides open up by the time McCullough would get here for his freshman year in the 2015 season.  Gift and Sanhez will have graduated.   I don't see D'lo staying 4 years.  I think we certainly have  at least one other who'll leave early.   I imagine we'll have at least 1 transfer by then.   And Amir may have to make a decision re: baseball by then....I'm not real worried about rides...

But that also brings up a question I often have when people speculate on a player you get now keeping you from landing a possibly better player down the road.   Even if you think McCullough is  a better PROSPECT than Martin --- is a FRESHMAN McCullough going to be abetter  PLAYER than a SOPHMORE Martin?
