So as I have mentioned to you guys before Amir (as well as Jamal Branch) are in my Tuesday night class. Tonight we went as a class to the women's game against West Virginia. I got to spend a few minutes talking to Amir and Moe (who showed up. He isn't in the class but pretended to be.) They were goofing around jumping on each other as I was standing next to them and they ended up making small talk with me.

Amir has a great sense of humor and so does Moe. I didn't really want to ask them basketball questions and be that guy. But they are super fun. I ended up moving and getting a better seat but D'Angelo, Dom and Slim showed up too. Oh and Malik Boothe. Anyway it was a fun night.

Just food for thought.

in all seriousness, it's nice to hear that these guys appear to genuinely like each other. bonding is certainly a huge part of winning.

i always thought that 3-Lo's temper could get in the way, but good too see that it hasn't.  i honestly don't know if Lindsey's ego with 3-Lo's fire could have coexisted.

I think Amir will definitely play 4 years. Remember he will attend rookie ball this year which finishes Sept. 1.  Most Rookie pitchers throw less than 50-60 innings and usually shut down way before that  to work on mechanics.

Then their second year they throw  80-100 innings max. Which again means no fall league.

Everyone seems to be excited that he tops out at 96mph, which means he sits at 92-93.  Remember the minors have more hard throwers than the majors and the vast majority do not make it.

The Yankees #1 prospect LHP Manny Banuelos is coming up on his 5th season and has yet to pitch in any Fall League yet.

Lastly, much of the down time before and after the season is spent on conditioning which would definitely not be a problem with Sargent Major Mike Dunlap at the helm.  The REDS probably haven't had an athlete like Amir since Dion Sanders and Eric Davis.

Well the one good thing about not getting Gathers or Sampson is Garrett will probably start next season and  will def get a lot of time.

Hold on a second chief!!    Don't write off Sampson yet.  A lot of us are still holding out hope that he's going to be the center piece of this class.

But I do think you're right.   Amir is developing real well and should be in for plenty of PT next season regardless of who we pick up.

I don't think him playing in the fall league has anything to do with whether he plays basketball or not.

From what I have heard I am not expecting Sampson.
Even if we only get a couple 6-8 JUCO's similar to GG and Branch I think we make the tourney next year. We need to add 3 guys that can contribute right away to the 6 returners. If all 6 come back and we get a couple serviceable big bodies we win 20 next year.

Don't know how accurate but I just heard we are not the favorite for him. I don't think that is ground breaking or anything. Honestly at this point I could care less. Get a couple of JUCO's, Branch everyone returns and we will be fine. Lavin comes back healthy we get into NCAA's and recruiting will pick up IMO.

This. Get a couple JUCO bigs that can rebound and play some D and we will be in nice shape next season.

since this is an Amir thread, I want to comment on a fine player who had another good game and showed guts with the game on the today versus ND.  But more impressive than his on court ability is how impressed I am in how he honored his commitment to our school and his teammates after at first being denied by the NCAA.  going off to the boondocks so he could join in for the second semester.  Think about where we would be if he mailed it in as others did and did not show up on our doorstep in December.  Great for him--he will be successful in whatever he tries.

Amir is gonna be awesome and I think he will be here at least 3 years ( at that point he will know baseball or hoops ) and I think he will choose hoops.

There are a ton of had throwers in the minors. With the improvement we have seen in 6 weeks imagine what we will see in  a year

For what it is worth, Keith Law, who some of you may know is ESPN's "guru" on scouting/player evaluation, believes that the Reds took a big time flier on Garrett.  Describes him as being extremely raw as a pitcher, who was drafted and paid simply because of his unbelievable athleticism (for a pitcher) and live arm.  Regardless, K-Law views him as being very, very far away from advancement.

I look at Amir
wit his lefty hand,
wit his ability to finish,
wit wanting to do the dirty work,
wit playin D like his life depend on it,
wit swatting away a three-point J,
wit his broad shoulders and wiry frame,
wit hops that know no bounds,
wit his natural ability to pass wit grace

and I see a ll bit of someone else - the greatest role player in the histry of college ball.................
