Freshman minutes
« on: February 28, 2012, 03:05:06 PM »
I was thinking about how far ahead our freshman have gotten this year with all of the minutes logged and started looking at some stats of some of the players in 2011 that we were involved with. Other than the top 10 type recruits (Nick Johnson, LeBryan Nash, Jabari Hind, and Quincy Miller) barely any of these guys averaged double digits in minutes. The obvious point is how far ahead of the game our guys go into their Sophmore year with all of the experienced they got this year. But the other point is how could a recruit turn down the possible minutes available as a freshman at St.Johns. Lavins a good recruiter to begin with, but he will definitely harp on this with recruits and any kid would have to listen. This year was an anomaly because of our lack of depth, but a good recruit will garner a good 20 minutes a game here and that is a lot more time than most freshman will get elswhere. This will probably the last year Lavin will have the luxury of using this as a recruiting tool. Below is a list of some of the guys we missed on and their minutes per game.

Remi Barry- 8.1
Tavon Sledge- 2.4
Sterling Gibbs- 9.8
De La Rossa- 7.9
Corey Edwards- 10
Cezarr Guerroro- 16.8
Duece Bello- 9.4
Nadir Thape- 5.6
Angel Nunez- 4.6
Josaiah Moore- 7.9

Our guys
Harrison- 34.9
Mo- 36.3
Greene- 30.9
Garrett- 25.6
Pointer- 30.5
Achuiwa- 30.0

Hollywood is brilliant the way he gives newcomers massive minutes so it's another feather in his cap come recruiting time.  Started Polee vault the whole way last year even when it became crystal clear he wasn't one of our five best.

Moving Double G to 6th man thus creating the "Fresh Five" was another outstanding move along the same vein.

The move to the "fresh five" was actually the right move to make, irrespective of whether it was motivated by recruiting, although I can't wait to see what Branch can do with this team next year.

Now all we need is a great big to realize how much pT he will get here and he wont even be playing during a rebuilding year. We can make some noise next year. Im not convinced it was such a brilliant move to give everybody so many minutes,as opposed to the fact we onle have 6 players and have to give everybody plenty of minutes. If everybody qualified things would have been different. RE Gift not starting, the other plasyers are more talented. Playing 30 min a game for SJU seems more appealing then playing 10 min a game for a Kansas.

You know when he did that I thought also that just from a PR move it was a great move. That being said Garrett has thrived in the starting lineup so it was definitely a smart move coaching wise also

We sure gave Barry a lot of attention for a guy who hardly plays. I wonder if he OK.
