I don't even want to imagine how demoralizing it would be right now if Norm had remained our coach, graduated all those players last year after they would have underachieved, and we would have put a bunch of mid-majors type talent on the court this year. We put some really young and talented players in SJU uniforms this year who were fun to watch and for the most part had smiles on their faces even under tough odds. What these guys have accomplished, and what Lavin has put together, has remained in the national conversation all year long. Anyway, I am really pleased with the direction the university is going with the program, the support it has given the program and Steve Lavin, and for the toughness our guys have shown hanging in there. If I had known at the beginning of the season that Harrison would rank 2nd or 3rd in the nation in scoring, and lead the BE for FROSH in scoring, I would have taken it with bells and streamers. And if I had known that Harkless would have excelled as he has done, to the point that we're all hoping he doesn't jump to the NBA, I'd have been thrilled. Who thought Greene would assert himself the way he has? Pointer has shown glimpses. And Amir is so committed to SJU and has shown glimpses of the player he'll become. Even God's Gift, the guy has been steadfast, and as a JUCO transfer was an enigma (as well as a late signee) and he has been strong for us, taking on much stronger inside talent in the BE.
At the end of the day, things have changed since Lavin's arrival. SJU is in the national conversation again. Any talented recruit will at least consider us.
