-D'Angelo Harrison, St. John's Freshman Guard
"I really enjoyed playing with Moe. He is a great player and I wish him luck and success in the NBA. I hope to join him in the league in a few years."

After the first couple of games of the season, I said in four years Harrison has a real shot at being an NBA player/ Top level Euro League Player.I thought he maybe a combo guard but he has a lot of polished tools as a Frosh & the confidence of an NBA Pro.
However after watching a full season I think he could be a first round draft pick after his sophomore season    . He has shown the vital intangible of leadership , high B-Ball IQ ,  clutch aptitude , heart & hustle. As well as the physical attributes of long range shooting , mid range jumper , on ball defense , ability to finish strong through contact ,using his body to get  to the free throw line where he shot 80% , a low handle &  a keen passing ability that few combo guards aka not a chucker!
Although Harrison will not play back up PG as much as he did this year which could hurt his draft status,on the positive side I except him to lead the Big East in scoring about 20-24 points per game because he will be most importantly more experienced , have a true PG in  Branch sharing the same back court the 2nd half of the season & the luxury of having coach Lavin on the bench next to him. This will lead to some NCAA accolades as well as the spotlight from the NBA scouting eyes.

With all the talk about Jakarr Sampson following Mo's footsteps being 1 & done , I can see St.Johns sending both Harrison & Jakarr to the 1st RD of the 2013 NBA draft.

What does the Jungle think?

How many 6'2" shooting guards go in the first round?  I see Harrison as a 4 year player.  Hope his game keeps rising and he proved me wrong.

A whole shoot-load.  They call them combos and "project" them to also be able to play the 1.

BTW - Is De'Angelo shrinking?  Thought he's listed at 6'3.

Since 2000:   Juan Dixon, Keyon Dooling, Joe Forte, Dajuan Wagner,  Troy Bell, Leandro Barbosa, Ben Gordon, Delonte West, Beno Udrih, Luther Head, Eric Gordon, Jerrod Bayless, George Hill, Russell Westbrook (Darren Collison was UCLA's PG his 2 years),  Stephen Curry, Jrue Holiday (Darren Collison was UCLAs PG his 1 year), Toney Douglas, Eric Bledsoe, Avery Bradley, Nolan Smith....

Without question, I see D'Angelo as a future NBA player.  He has the confidence and ability to score 20+ PPG at the college level.

Going forward, I'd say he needs to work on two aspects of his game primarily.  First, he needs to further improvement his jump shot.  While he is a natural shooter, he has a tendency to go through some serious cold spells.  If he keeps working on improving his long range shooting ability, he'll be near unstoppable at this level.  And on top of that, he needs to improve his handle.  While he'll never be a pure point guard at this level, I'd envision him being somewhere between a Randy Foye and Kyle Lowry type of player.  That combo guard who is just flat out dangerous with the ball in his hand.

Listed 6'3 but looks smaller-probably 6'2. Almost all the guys you listed are much bigger or play bigger. Too small to play D as a 2 in NBA. Needs to develop his point g skills for next level. Love his game as a collegian and believe if he stays 4 yrs has great chance to become St J's all time leading scorer. Hope he has successful career in NBA but believe it will have to be as a point and maybe spot at the 2 for brief stretches.

The first 4 question I asked myself before I posted this
1) Is D'Angelo the odds on  favorite to be the Big East Leading scorer next year? Yes, so that will draw a lot of attention from NBA scouts & they will see his other intangibles.
2) Will staying in college for 4 years help him get draft higher? No, scouts would probably want to know if he can run the 1 full time like Steph Curry did his JR year but D'Angelo won't have the chance with Branch & Green there. He won't grow any taller just like Doron Lamb which would be his other Knock. Staying for 4 years takes away from the scouts favorite word potential
3) Can he defend an NBA 1? Yes , saw him have a few difficult time with a few guards in the Big East but so would most NCAA prospects .But he has come up big on D on more than a few occasions against taller & quicker players
4)Is he a willing passer? Maybe I think his B-Ball IQ is high enough , he is also a pin point passer who has the ability to drive the lane and create. We saw him force a lot of shots last year but I think part of that was due to our lack of talent on the offensive end.

Other Combo guards/Small SG/ scoring PG in the NBA seeing a lot of PT or on an NBA roster Sweet Lou Williams  , Jason Terry , Rodrigue Beaubois, Devin Harris, Norris Cole , Mario Chamlers ,   Tony Parker , Derek Fisher , Reggie Williams , Ramon session , Doland Solan , Jeremy Lin , Courtney Lee, Gary Neal , Goran Dragic , Jordan Crawford , Shelvin Mack , Charles Jenkins  , etc

Just watching John Lucas III (happy he finally got his chance!) tonight I was thinking D'Angelo can easily be doing what Lucas was doing.
I love  Bassy & every time I saw him play this year he looked a lot more mature but D'Angelo would take his spot as back up PG on the Suns next year. I can see him backing up Nelson on the magic as well Duhon can't throw the ball in the ocean. Miller is a FA for Denver next year I can see him backing up Ty in that high power offense.

The thing that sets

Hope like hell he makes it there, but D'angelo is a long shot in my eyes.  I'll be rooting for him though.
Needs more pg skills, and more athleticism.    Those are the common traits amongst the guys cr listed.

There aren't very many undersized 2's like D'Angelo that get to a good place in the NBA HOWEVER there are a few.  Louis Williams and Eddie House, just to name a few.  What will help D'Angelo's cause is the fact that he's an absolute pit bull and is in attack mode at all times.  Very hard to find players in the NBA who have that mentality 82 games a year and GMs might like that.  I think he could get a shot at it in a few years.

Love D LOs skill and attitude. Hope he makes it in the NBA , but only after he plays here 4 years and becomes a SJU legend.

I was just looking at the later half of the 1st rd project mock draft in 2013 , I see D'Angelo being just as good as those so call PG 16-30. That is a far time from now and a lot has to happen for D'Angelo but I think it will & he will be on the national scene next year, especially after leading the Big East in scoring. I see Melvin as the only viable candidates to contended , not counting the new teams coming to the big east next year.

Tough to tell.  Guys take big jumps.  A year ago Crowder and Lamb both averaged 11pts a game, Kevin Jones averaged 13.   They all went up 7 or 8 pts a game.

If Waiters stays or Wayns doesn't hire an agent and comes back, I could see either one of them leading the league.
And Russ Smith and Kilpatrick could see huge jumps too.

But I think D'angelo will be right up there too.

D'Angelo averaged 18.5 this year, good for 3rd in the BE.  Now that Moe is gone, I think D'Angelo will increase his scoring by 1.5 -2 ppg, and has to be considered the favorite to lead the BE in scoring.

What will kill Harrison is that he just isn't that athletic.  A lot of the names that CrGreen mentioned have superior athletic ability.  They can get into the lane and get a shot off, unaffected, or better yet, take it to the rim and flush it.  No matter how many years Harrison stays, he can't do that.

That being said, I think he has other intangibles that will get him serious looks.  I can see him playing at the next level in an "instant offense" role...Remember Vinny Johnson? The microwave.  Kinda like that.

I am the president of the D'Angelo Harrison fan club--the end of the season turned into me following his stats more than the scores of our games--but my guy showed during the Pitt game just how slow he is.  It's unfortunate, because he is as skilled as a freshman as I've ever seen:  tight handle, great vision, tenacious scorer, prolific shooer, etc.

He'll need four years for a chance at the end of the first round.  I wish him the best.  Like I said since he signed, he'll go down in history as one of the top Johnnies of all-time.

if he learns from our staff, he'll be in the league.

he's tough and he plays with the eye of the tiger.  those are the intangibles.
