This is the only rational position for owners (and college basketball fans).  For players . . . not so much.

For owners they get to really see the players in action prior to making a multi-million dollar commitment to them.  The only thing I don't understand, and I don't know a lot about unions, is why wouldn't the players association as a service to their present membership, agree to this as part of the CBA.  It would guarantee a large percentage of their active membership some extra money and years of service if, even temporarily, they slowed down the influx of new players to their league.  Is a union responsible for negotiating for future members, the hsers/underclassmen who would lose out on a couple of years of pay?

Fine with that.  The problem with your position is you want the players to make the rules.  In what other field do the employees dictate the rules to their employers?

I like the way baseball does.  they draft kids out of high school and if the kids don't sign but go to college they can not reenter the draft until after Junior year so they get a college experience.  at least the kids are given an option of going straight to pro ball versus college.  big difference is that baseball spends the money to develop High schoolers by having a minor league system.  Pro basketball does not want to commit the resources to develop the high schoolers.

I'd even propose allowing players to be drafted and the NBA team maintains their rights, similar to hockey.

Good idea. Then the teams can tell the player when they think they are ready to join the team and in the mean time they can continue to play college ball. There are a myriad of systems that have got to be better than what we have now.

I mean I know most ppl don't like hockey but the system is pretty damn good.  You can draft a player either out of HS or juniors provided they are a certain age or pick anyone who hasn't been drafted or wasnt signed under previous drafted team.  It's kind of surprising too since Gary Bettman was Stern's right hand man, that there might not be some thought to it.

I also don't understand...why can't a kid that declares and goes undrafted return to college.  Assuming he didn't hire an agent.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

I'd adopt the the baseball method. They can declare out of high school or they have to stay 2 years in college.

You are right yankcranker. I just feel its wrong that they want to profit more off the kids by making anthony Davis play 2 more years and boost sales of apparells and tv rights while the kids get........
