Um...hey Dick...we have a legendary NYC basketball coach on our staff, our lead recruiting assistant is a NY guy with tremendous ties, and we have Lavin.  Stop stirring the pot.  If we don't get Whitehead because we didn't hire Tiny, well too bad (and I doubt Whitehead's advisors are that narrow minded anyway).  We got the top local player two years ago, and he ended up being a lottery pick when no one projected him as a one and done.  And we got another top NYC player this year, along with NYC Juco's (including a highly ranked one), and another really good prospect in Felix.

if it is allocco, i love the hire.  beyond being a great coach, he brings a well rounded approach which i believe goes beyond just basketball.  the guy is a poet, lecturer, motivational speaker, and appears to be well-liked.  at this stage in a students career you need that kind of balance. it's not just about basketball. plus unlike Dunlap, i think we can rest assure that he'll be at st. john's as long as lavin is here. don't think allocco will be going anywhere anytime soon.

Hoops is so passé. He just reported the death of Bin Laden, not exactly a scoop breaker! Lav claims he is not deciding until late July or August, so we need to let this play out. Amazing that Hoops still draws a pay check!

How many coaches have a career record similar to his? Those are the only NYC coaches who should even have the nerve to be offended.

I spoke to a few basketball people about Coach Allocco over the last few days and they all said he is an amazing Coach and would fill this role very well. i just have concerns/doubts about any high school coach being able to slide right into a #1 assistant role in Division I.

Personally (and my opinions means $hit), I would rathe have the coach from the Pacers, Jim Boylen. When some is described as a "preparation fanatic" and is former Div I head coach and has NBA experience, they get my vote.

Fwiw  I have heard the same about Allocco..  I had my concerns as well.. Either way I have a feeling this search will take a little time.

Ok then, appears this is the real deal.    For a moment I started to wonder if Lav was floating his friend's name with relation to our open position as a favor to get him some exposure.. even if we ended up ultimately going in another direction.

Doesn't appear that is the case.   I trust Lav on this one.   The concerns others have mentioned about D-1 experience are valid.   But we'll just have to wait and see.   If Lav is running at full strength physically.. then Allocco may be doing much more assisting than we were used to with Dunlap around.   I can see Lav rejuvenated and taking a more hands on approach in practice planning and other things Dunlap did.

Plus, you gotta figure Dunlap rubbed off on Tony, Rico and Mo.   I'm sure they absorbed a lot being around him every day.  And it's not like they're basketball novices themselves.    We have a well rounded staff.   Allocco may not be the nba-experienced stud we hoped for... but he'll bring his own expertise to the table.

Lets get the University open and the contract drafted and signed so he can get on the road and help out the rest of the staff.  Hopefully he's tight with Dinos and the rest of the West Coast AAU scene.

Also remember the delay two year was similar.  University was waiting for the fiscal year to end (May) to bring on Dunlap and Hicks

You can only have 3 coaches at once on the road.  They rotate pretty much.  I'd like to think Lav will want to bring him around and show off his new addition to the staff.

Dunlap was on the road but not as much as Lav, Tony and Rico.

I really doubt it.  At least early in any coming college career.   My friends on the west coast say his reputation is he is THE high school coach who gets the "most with the least".    He's had a few outstanding talents over the years (currently including Pitts), but he has established his remarkable record by simply outcoaching other teams, not just by throwing waves of talent at them.  His players are disciplined, in shape, intelligent on the court.  His practices are organized and effective - and that has allowed less talented teams to out-execute opposing teams on the floor.  He is also known for his ability in terms of in-game adjustments - a result of the discipline of his teams borne of those practices, that allow the team to implement those adjustments.   This may seem like a weird stat, but I think it speaks volume as to the coach's impact.   But there are schools that have produced more college (all leverl) All-Conference players than has De La Salle over the the period of Allocco's tenure - an indicator of that higher physical talent level at other schools.   But De La Salle has produced more than TWICE as many college team Captains, as any other California school - Allocco produces smart, disciplined, intelligent LEADERS - in other words, extremely well coached kids - Winners.

Most everyone I've talked to seem to think he will be an OUTSTANDING college assistant.   Because of his lack of recruiting  experience, they're not as sure of his potential as a collegeiate head coach - but that's a "to be deteermined a a later date" kind of thing.

I should also point out, most of those I've communicated with did not think he would even consider leaving high school head coaching at this time.  They all seem very surprised that this story has the kind of legs it does.

The progression 2 years ago was:

3-30-2010:  Steve Lavin announced as Head Coach
4-09-2010:  Tony Chiles announced as Assistant Coach
4-19-2010:  Rico Hines Announced as Assistnt Coach
6-01-2010:  Moe Hicks announced as DOBO
6-15-2010:  Mike Dunlap announced as Assistant Coach
