Excellent crowd tonight.  Believe it was the biggest of our Midnight Madness'.  And thats WITH Yankees game 5 competing with it.  Was really impressed at how hard the guys defended during the scrimmage.  Very little came easy offensively which is rare to see in a midnight madness scrimmage.  Obekpa's defensive presence looks like it'll carry over relatively seamlessly from HS to college, as he blocked two 3s and also caused a few alterations to other teams offense including a funny moment in which Jamal Branch drove the lane, as about to take a floater, looked up and saw Obekpa and kicked it out.  Fans that hadn't ever watched the recruits play (95% of them) were really impressed with Felix's jumping ability and I think that took people by surprise.  Really liked Jamal Branch's communication skills as he was talking A LOT as he was playing point.  Guys look hyped and ready.  So am I.  Very excited for first game to get here.

I was in the student section. It was about as packed as it could be. You really couldn't ask for a bigger crowd. The hype is definitely there...the St. John's posters were gone within minutes and there were a ton of them, students waited for hours outside in line, and you could sense that we know this is a special group. While I doubt they will actually make the tourney this year (still young), I definitely think we will improve our regular season record and knock off our share of big boys. Look for the Cuse upset considering they lost Waiters and Melo. It's possible with this group.

I truly hope this type of crowd carries over in ratio to MSG. The students sections were packed full...we need the public to be excited too once we get in MSG. Getting a huge crowd at MSG with this talented a team will absolutely lead to huge upsets.

I know they said it was the largest crowd ever for the event, but I was wondering if it's another lie just like when colleges bring in new freshmen classes and tell them they are the most intelligent and gifted group in their history...every year lol. But it wouldn't shock me if it was.

This is the 3rd year I've gone ( since they move it out of Taffner) and this was a much bigger crowd that the last two years.  There was also a greater sense of excitement n the part of students.  The school did a good job with having events preceding the Tip Off and getting students to turn out.  Hopefully, they continue to attend the games.

Sold out in 94, and it was done right.

repost from elsewhere...

a few quick observations:

nice crowd...the best i've seen at these events.  and remember, the yankees were playing for their lives!

crowd noise?  who can tell?  the "music" was LOUD...and i still go to rock concerts.

i know it was a scrimmage, but i expected ole defense and what i saw was mid season big east quality hard nosed play.

some of you may not want to make a big deal about it...but obekpa's shot blocking was eye opening!!!  he blocked two potential three pointers.  remember last year when were were schooled out there?  it's not happening this year.  no way.

bourgout's three point range was all that was promised.  he hit the two shots he took from the corner after obekpa threw the first back in his face.

sanchez can really run the floor and will be a big plus this year.

jakarr looked spectacular at times.  when he's coached to play within the game and not to show up on the espn highlight reel he'll be an nba'er.  at this point, he thinks highlight reel first.

i don't know how, but amir's game looks more solid than last year.  the same with sir dominick.  the guard play from d'lo and branch was ordinary.

Sir Dom Looked comfortable--didn't have to worry about rebounding; could cheat on D and then off to the races and WOW can he finish!!

sanchez with a great soccer move to set up the dunk...what coordination!!

Best thing learned from mm is that Chris O is truly a shot blocker deluxe. Nice crowd but unfortunately the school once again does not run things properly. Twice during the week I called ticket office with questions about mm and was advised to get there early because school did not want everyone getting there at the same time at the last minute. So what do they do: they have everyone line up outside and for an event advertised to start at 7pm they make us wait on line outside and don't open the doors to let us in until 7pm. At least they had the sense not to start the event until everyone was slowly let in.

Finally able to see the ESPN3 replay.

Surprises (for me), in no particular order:

Sir Dom looking far more confident on the offensive end than last year, and Sir DOMINANT at the defensive nd...

How quickly Amir has gotten back into "hoops mode"...also, appeared more mature than last year...

Chrisian Jones.  First score of the scrimage was a no hesitation midrange jumper swished by Jones - wasn't expecting taht.   Obviously watched him closely, trying to see WHAT it was that allowed him to be totally ignored  in recruiting, even playing at a prominant school like IMG, where recruiters were  certainly watching his ranked teammates.  STILL have no clue.   I had assumed that his measurements were "fudged" - that  the 6'7 230 lb listing would turn out to be like 6'4 or so.  But the kid's size is legit.  Then I thought, well he must be slow or clumsy - but watching him on the breaks, he seemed to keep up with proven thorobreds like Dom and Amir, and his footwork in the paint, both on O and D seemed more than solid.   There certainly seems no doubt about his hops.   His hands appeard strong on the boards, and didn't see him fumbling any passes or catches.     Even watched him close during the intros - to see how he interacted with his teammates (looking for signs of an attitude issue) - but seemed smiling, personable and popular with tje other guys.    So I have no clue -  except that I think he will be a significant contributor off the bench for us this year, and maybe MUCH more in the following years.

Obekpa - HAS to play 20+ minutes a game .  Just HAS to.  Game changer even if he never scores a point - but was pleasantly surprised that he DIDN'T appear lost at all on the offensive end.  Showed decent hands catching, passed out of the post a couple times very efficiently.   But his defensive speed and quickness is just amazing.   Had read last night he blocked 2 three pt attempts, but had assumed they were on defensive switches where he was out on the perimeter  defending - didn't realize he came from the freaking post to the corner on "help D" to block Hooper's shot!    He's going to be able to control the middle in zone, and be able to hedge out to the line and still get back to defend the post in man.

Sanchez - reminded me of (guess which schools fomrer player?) - UCLA's Tyler Honeycutt, only stonger.   Honeycutt's nickname was "the toolbelt" - because he carried every tool you need - quickess, speed, hands, lenght, shooting, shotblocking, passing, dribbling, vision.   Couldn't tell from such a short srimmage if he's GREAT at any one thing, but it's obvious he's GOOD at just about everything.

Sampson.   Still need to see more of his outside game.  But physically, VERY reminicent of the Pre-injury Ed O'Bannon - but with a much mor out-going personality than Ed.

Marco - Did they clone Matt Carroll?

Branch.   Again, short scrimmage.  But very impressed with his confidence at the point.   And he IS a point guard who can score, not a scoring guard trying to play point.   Made the right pass almost every atime, drove the ball when when the D gave him that.  Got tot he rim pretty easily both times that occurred.

Felix - didn't see enuf to form a strong impression  - other than he's obviusly fast and athletic.

Hooper - Pretty much what I remember for him from Mater Dei high school.   Not fast, not overly athletic, but a zone breaker, smart player, and a guy want on the floor at the end of the game when the opponents are forced to start fouling......But I think Bourgalt is gonna be the first option for that.  But with the transfer year, Marco is only in front of him for 1 season....

D'lo - looked like he was pressing a bit - trying to do too much.  Seemed to loosen up and look like himself in the 2nd 6 minutes.

Last - wonder if there's anything to take from N'Diaye getting a couple of minutes run with the scholarship kids during the scrimmage?  He's  listed as a soph.  A google search seems to indicate he was playing for D-2 Chestnut Hill College in Philly  as a frosh last year...
