How deep...?

How deep does Lavin go into the bench? What kind of rotation will they go with? Johnnies have capable backups at every position it seems. Should we press,push the ball,force the tempo, try to run teams into the ground with our depth? Does Coach have the right parts in place to run for 40 minutes?

 They have the horses.  Most athletic team in the Big East.  I hope the press and run.

We'll press on offense a bit more as well as on D.  I think we'll play everybody o. Our bench and we go 12 deep.  Sme guys will get more time of course, but I think we'll run waves of players at opponents.  I think our bench has sufficient talent where we won't lose much when guys like Bourgault, Balamou or Jones come in. 

Mark me down as one who thinks Bourgault will get more time than some might suspect.  He's a good shooter, ball handler and we'll need him for his ability in offensive sets.  He can help break zones.  I don't think we have too many major weak spots except youth and maybe lacking just a tad in pure scorer/shooters.  We aren't starving for them either though.

At PF we have three absolutely phenomenal athletes.  Very strong group here with variety of skills.  One top 50 recruit, one JC All American and one possible sleeper.

      3) Marco Bourgault.

We return 2 top 70 SF's who were good last year but should be a year better.  Add a JC SF who is a lights of shooter.

SG. 1) D'Angelo Harrison
       2) Felix Balamou

One is arguably best scorer in Big East.  Balamou Osna's leading scorer and athletic freak.  We also have Phil Greene here as a combo but he'll get listed as a PG

At PG we return last seaon's starting PG and welcome top 60 transfer in Branch.  Is PG really our least "deep" position?  Not bad considering we return our starter and he may not even be starting come Big East play.


Looking position by position, I think we have 2 teams.  We have talent on our bench that matches or even betters some Big East rosters.  Again, youth is our biggest weakness.  If we can jell, we'll be dancing.  Finally have a legit Big East roster and depth.

I do, but we are going to play against a lot of teams that have centers, and Obekpa too good of a defensive player to keep off the court.  We will play against guys like Adams, Christmas/Coleman and others that will require our "African Connection".  We will often play "small" with Sanchez at the 5, but IMO he looks more like a 3/4 type with his athleticism and skills.  It's a great problem to have.

Win the Big East??    I hope you guys are right, but I have my doubts.   Lots of them.
We're improved... but this is still a work in progress.

We do have depth though, which is a welcome change.   I think coach runs a 10 man rotation.   Any more than that really is unmanageable and unsustainable.  At some point in the season guys need roles. 
I don't see Jones playing, and I think the backcourt gets too crowded for Felix once Branch returns. 
I think we see a lot of Sanchez and Sampson, and less of Gift and Obekpa than many expect.

Ha!, IMO there's a 3 way tie for best team in the big east. Louisville and Syracuse aren't leaps and bounds Ahead

what Needs to happen

First, several players who were completely awful last year need to getter better. For example Dom Pointless and Phil Greene, who stank, they'll have to not stink. Gazundheit Achiewa will need to perform against Division 1 teams with the same aplomb that he does against Division 3 teams. These players as a group will have to shoot better than .28 percent from 3, higher than 40 percent from the floor, and manage more than 10 assists a game. 

Second, his year's freshmen class will have to play much better much faster than last year's heralded freshman class, which included a first round NBA draft pick and a player some fans here claim is the best player in the BE. You may recall that last year's heralded freshman class team won 13 of the 32 games it played. So all of the new freshman will have to perform at a much higher level than a rational fan would expect them to perform and they will have to adapt to college with a wisdom and maturity than many 18 year olds don't possess.

Third someone will have to step in and replace Mike Dunlap, last I heard a tactical and logistical genius. Perhaps its this new guy who has never before coached a day in his life. And TGAPL will have to prove that his .350 winning percentage this century is a fluke and that he is in fact able to win games without Norm Roberts players.

Finally several other players and teams in the BE will need to get considerably worse. Ideally most of the very good players would be declared academically ineligible and several HOF coaches would be banned from the sport forever. But that seems unlikely. Perhaps though the Carrier Dome will get swallowed up in a giant sink hole taking NY's team with it and Kentucky will secede from the union. That would improve SJ chances immeasurably.

So to recap. In order for SJ to win the BE calamity would have to befall the top half of the league and SJ players and staff would need to overachieve.
