Billy was an hellacious rebounder - especially on the defensive end.  He's #7 All Time in ABA history in Rebouding, #4 all time for Defensive Rebounds...Oh, and he's also #3 all time in ABA history in Blocked Shots.

His per game rebound numbers went down after the merger and he joined the NBA.  But only 'cause his minutes went down in the deeper league.  His per 36 numbers  his last 3 years in the ABA were 10.8, 9.8, 10.5.   After the merger, his next 6 seasons they were 9.2, 9.8, 10.6, 9.6, 9.5, 9.7.    The WORST per 36 rebounding number in his 15 years in the pros was 8.0, in his 10th season.   But he finsished strong, with 9.5 in his 13th season, 8.4 in his 14th, and 9.3 in his 15th and final year.

Hellacious.

Don't know if I've mentioned it here, but I worked for several years in the ABA.   Really feel the guys from that league have gotten short shrift.     I'm talking guys who played the same opposition over those years, and EQUALED OR OUT PERFORMED  Doctor J, Rick Barry, Moses Malone, Connie Hawkins, Spencer Haywood, George Gervin, Dan Issell, Artis Gilmore, Charlie Scott, David Thompson, etc.

As a UCLA fan I was thrilled to see 3 Bruins in this past Hall of Fame induction class.  But MORE thrilled that they FINALLY recognized the GREAT Mel Daniels.....and absolutely insane that the ABA's all time leader in both scoring AND assists, Louie Dampier, is on the outside looking in.

When I see we're on a big kid named Jessie Govan, my brain flashes back to one of the best passing bigs I've ever seen, Jersey's own Gerald Govan - 6'10, 12th in ABA history in assists and 3rd all time in Rebounds (a fairly unique combination) - he retired at age 34 the year before the merger, so NBA fans never got to see him play....wonder if young Jessie is related?

Couldn't agree with you more regarding ABA.  I to this day believe that Dr. J in the ABA was better than Jordan.  The excitement Dr. J created was unbelievable in the Nassau Colesium to anyone who saw him play there.  His play after the trade by the Nets was hampered by the "curse of Roy Bowe"
I agree with you regarding Doc.  He was my favorite watch of all time.  Michael was more successful but Doc was prettier.

Top Scorer: Harrison
Top Rebounder: Obekpa
Assist Leader: Phil
Top Shot Blocker: Obekpa
Steal Leader: Amir
Most Improved Player: Phil
Least Improved Player: Amir
Top Overall Newcomer (including a Freshman, Transfer or JUCO):Sanchez
Top Freshman: Jones
If Chris O leads us in both rebounding and shot blocking he is our top freshman although somehow if your scenario is correct we will have at least 2 great freshman.

Bayne should have gone to Monmouth. He was in no way a BE player. What made you bring him up?

Who was St. Johns biggest player ever?  Hard to believe, but for my Bruins, Lew Alcindor is only FOURTH on the list...

Imagine if last years team had him and Roberts. Wouldn't have changed everything, but maybe NIT.

I think Marillac referred to him as "the Yao Ming of the South" after a youtube clip.  ;)

It was Note Dame. I think he had four blocks in the same sequence, and Ryan Humphrey was so intimidated he pretty much did nothing rest of game.

And that was after Bayne had dropped like 50 pounds.

I always hope my team can find someone of that size for the 13th ride.    Lets face it - the 13th guy on the roster is highly unlikely to every actually impact a game in terms of wins and losses.   His value is really, is he decent practice fodder.  Be he 6'0 of 6'8, if he's slow with limited talent, he's not going to swing a game one way or another  But a 6'10 or bigger kid or a  260 lb or bigger kid (or one who's both)?   SOMETIME in his 4 years, there's going to be ONE game - maybe even a couple,  where a close game simply needs size in the middle and 5 fouls to give without it becoming an old fashioned 3 pt play to get or preserve a win.   Thats when a true big  - even a "not so talented one"  can mean a win.   Coach Lavin learned that his first year as a coach, when an injury left him with no one over 6'8 to go to against a Minnesota team with two 7 footers once Jelani McCoy went down with an injury in the Elite 8.   Didn't need skill.  Didn't need shooting.  Didn't need speed.  All that was needed was a big body to hold their big away from the basket or send him to the line without getting a close shot off first (3 pt play).   Didn't have the body, and Steve's best shot at a title ended in the Elite 8.   He later took grief for accepting a transfer student of very limited skill named John Hoffart - "not a UCLA level Player".  But Hoff WAS a deans list student (smart), and 6'11 275.   And Steve got him to WALK ON.    As it turned out, he was never needed - but he WAS there to bang bodies in practice for two years with a raw kid named Ryan Hollins - and because of that Hollins improved to the point he was MVP of the NCAA western Regional in 2006, and put up a double/double in the NCAA title game.   You can't teach size is one of the TRUEST axions in sport....

I hope we can find one.   They ARE out there.   Ben Howland very quietly got TWO of them (one 6'10 245, the other 6'10 220) to walk on this year, in addition to his #1 ranked class.   One a raw spaniard who was injured as a hs Jr., and limited his sr year, but with a pretty good bloodline - he's the younger brother of Pau and Marc Gasol.   The other is a 10pt/8reb JC center from Iran, who I can't figure out WHY he's walking on - he HAD to have had decent D-1 Scholarship offers (check out his video and let me know if, while not a Pac 12 or Big East, he doesn't look like a mid D-1 post player....
