My freshman year Mel took a redshirt yr due to knee injury than was drafted and signed by knicks foregoing his senior yr of eligibility. Other 2 were a little before my time as college players but do remember their pro careers. Not slighting their talents but doubt any was as good a shot blocker as CO or at least what it looks like he will be in that department. Know Killer Davis was a beast off the boards.

Just watched the game.  Obekpa was absolutely unbelievable!  Things that stood out for me were his poise, patience and calmness.  Better than advertised.  Wow.

I've been waiting all of my life for a shot blocker like CO to come to St. John's.  But lets have someone else take the ball out of bounds at the end of the game.

Phil looks a lot more confident in his shot.  I still would love to see him at the 2 when Branch returns.  He played a full 40 tonight and he was exhausted by the end.  Hopefully Felix can give him a breather during the upcoming tourney.

Garrett was very solid. 

Dlo was Dlo...he just knows how to put the ball in the basket.  He did a great job getting his hands in passing lanes too.

Jakarr seemed so nervous.  First game jitters for sure.  He has some skill set though...he will have to adjust his game a little but I see big things coming from him.

We will struggle offensively in the half court again.  Hopefully some miracle happens and Sanchez and Bourgault are eligible.

I actually thought CO got short changed on a few blocks. I thought he was in double digits. Regardless, he was dominant down low. It's amazing how under control he remains while blocking shots. He also wasn't just getting cheap blocks against small guards driving the lane -- he was blocking the other team's front court as well.

Phil and D'Angelo carried us for large portions of the game. Sanchez will be a huge addition if he is eligible because we need another guy who can get his own shot. As others have said, Garrett had a very nice all around game and was probably the only player who I thought didn't look sloppy at all. Jones was solid as well and he will get major minutes this year.

Jekarr didn't have a good game offensively but he had several shots rim in and out, he will be fine. Dom did not look good but hopefully his offense comes along because the athleticism is there. Great to have Mullin in the house for the game and great to start off the year with a win which it certainly didn't look like we were going to get.

Obekpa Blocks

Obekpa, which the only flaw he had was missed box outs at times, was nearly perfect yesterday.

Wow....Obekpa was a difference maker. Nice start to the season!!! Can't wait til we get our Point Gaurd on the floor.

Long 2's.  I'd rather take a long 2 than a 3.  That extra foot or so in improves odds.  The long two is a lost art in basketball nowadays.

Lets not get too high or too low.  Its 1 game I repeat 1 game.  A win is a win and a lot better than a loss.  The talent is there.  We won, scored 77 points with Harrison doing nothing until 10 min mark of 1st half I believe, Karr having what 2 points?  Dom having a bad game and us being short a guy or two.  The defense needs work, whatever it was.  The switching was horrendous at times.

I agree with the emotion modulation sentiment.  It was a good win but we look like one of those teams that can win or lose on any given to night to any opponent.  Very volatile

I expressed this concern after the exhibition games, but this team must improve defensive rebounding.  Our reb % is going to bite us eventually.  It could have easily decided this game - Detroit missed a few chippy put-backs down the stretch.

Lots of good takeaways but also plenty of room for improvement.  This team could be scary come March if they put it all together.

We outrebounded them by 4.  Again they weren't midgets out there.  Anderson is freakish 6'6 athlete we saw from his thunderous putback.

if minnerath is 6'9", then obekpa is 6'11".   all things considered, they would be a shorter big east team, kind of like how we were in 2010.

rebounding margin does not equal reb %.  they took 17 more shots than we did because of turnovers and second chance opportunities. 

obekpa jones and sampson do not box out and rely on their leaping ability to rip def boards.  i suspect that will change quickly.  another thing to watch is with obekpa going for blocks all over the court, the weak side is often left open.  we could really use a 6'9" 220 lb upperclassman PF.

To beat the likes of Murray St and Baylor SJU needs Marco and Sanchez in general and Sanchez in particular.  Sanchez will help score and rebound and ease the transition of Sampson and Jones into the rotation.

Definitely not a perfect win but you can see where adding Sanchez, Marco and later Branch will do to an already talented team.  This team could be very dangerous come February.

Our forwards are fine, but they are very, grey young and must learn how to create space.  All our forwards are either freshmen or sophs.   As far as the poster mentioning Obekpa blocking shots against smaller players, that's bogus.  He has blocked shots against a solid Detroit team yesterday.  He doesn't need to and won't be playing against guys 7'4" so it is really a silly.  Most guys Obekpa will be matching up with are 6'8"-6'11".  In that heir range, it's 6'11" guys will have plenty of trouble with Obekpa's blocking ability.
