Iona is where they belong. Adding Butler and Xavier is like putting a band aid on a guy who just got beheaded.

The football schools screwed us not the other way around.  You think it was good to form the Christian 7 don't you?  What else were we to do?  I don't see why you are so down on the new league when we and the others had no choice, have done nothing wrong and now have taken decisive action as best as we could.

This new league is exactly what the Big East started as in the first place---until football reared its ugly head.  That grew into the best basketball conference.  No reason it can't happen again.

Duke and Cuse fans would take the place over and all the other ACC schools will be left wondering how they let it happen.

It seems odd to play their tournament in this city.  I think the reaction from most of ACC fan base would be negative.

"I feel strongly that the Cathiclic schools are going to be there with us," Brey said. "That's one of the reasons we decided to sit tight. It looked like the Catholic schools were not going to be able to formulate the league they're going to put together. Could they put it together in the next six weeks? Nothing would shock me."

As it stands, Notre Dame has planned a non-conference schedule that includes Indiana in the Crossroads Classic, Ohio State in the Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden and Santa Clara making a visit to Purcell Pavilion.

“@ChiTribHamilton: Officially one more year in Big East for #NotreDame before ACC departure, Mike Brey said Thursday. Trib story: http://t.co/8JUXrNra

Moving forward, Pitino said he believes St. John’s is in a “unique situation” and has a recruiting edge over other schools, including local rivals Seton Hall and Rutgers (12-9, 3-7), losers of five straight.

“Look at recruiting this way, you have a 48-hour visit, you may be dealing with 36 hours really to impress a young person,” Pitino said. “So when you go and you see the facilities in a 36-hour span, you have to say to yourself, ‘ What attracts a young person?’ Well, it’s New York City, it’s Madison Square Garden, it’s the greatest city in the world.

“So they’ve got a little bit of an edge there in terms of recruits and that’s probably the difference-maker.”

He added: “St. John’s has stepped away from the Catholic-school kids and…they’ve enhanced their recruiting base and I think that’s an extremely smart thing to do.”

pitino is a self-serving weasel.  he has no cred when it comes to nyc area team recruiting...and the future of the big east.

Usually everything he says seems to be a backhanded dig, but I can't find any ulterior motive here.

Dantes doesn't allow feline's on the table so they would ban him and when an NYC Italian restaurant bans you, you get a visit from a gut named Vito ;D

http://espn.go.com/new-york/college-sports/story/_/id/8931014/big-east-seven-catholic-schools-hope-split-summer-2014-source-says

The Big East is hoping to resolve its divorce with the seven departing Catholic-based basketball schools within the next few weeks in time for a summer 2014 departure, according to a source who had detailed knowledge of Friday's conference call with the Big East.

The source said there seems to be a consensus that the seven will leave and form their own league for the fall of 2014, which is exactly what the seven want as well, according to a number of sources from the departing seven.

The source said the conference call didn't focus on expansion but rather on the exit of the seven as well as a new television contract. The Big East has a football contract for the fall of 2013 but nothing for men's basketball in 2013-14. ESPN has the right of first refusal but NBC Sports has been the most aggressive to secure the deal, according to the source.

The source said the remaining Big East schools expect a legal battle with the departing schools for the Big East name, which carries with it branding rights and national recognition.

The source said there was very little talk of expansion on Friday's call.

The departing seven -- Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's, Marquette, DePaul and Villanova -- still must decide on a new commissioner, form a league and all its bylaws, location, championships, and compliance rules as well as the number of schools it will add. The departing seven are expected initially to target Butler and Xavier out of the Atlantic 10 to get to nine teams. The next question will be if the seven grow to 10 or 12 with candidates among Creighton, Dayton, Saint Louis, Richmond and VCU.

The remaining Big East schools in 2014-15 would consist of UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida, Memphis, Temple, SMU, Houston, Central Florida, Tulane and East Carolina for football, and then Navy in the fall of 2015.

Pitt and Syracuse are leaving the Big East for the ACC next season. Louisville and Notre Dame are expected to join in the fall of 2014 while Rutgers is heading to the Big Ten at the same time.

If the remaining Big East looks to expand again, the two schools mentioned the most by sources are UMass and Tulsa out of the A-10 and Conference USA, respectively.

How can UConn even consider wanting the BE name with that pile of rubbish, to say nothing of the geographic idiocy.

So we are looking at $3.3 million a year

3.3 x 9 = 30
3.3 x 12 = 40
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

That's much better than what the BE football schools were going to throw at the hoops schools, however it is over $1 million less per year than what was being projected a month ago.

We'll soon see what the real numbers are.  At least the lower figures reported by this ESPN article are high enough to attract the top hoops schools that the new league needs.

Regardless, it will be a lot better than what we were getting before.  We will also have more stake in this new league and a voice in the direction our league goes which is priceless.
