ESPN has until Thursday to match NBC Sports Network's seven-year, $20-$23 million per year offer to retain the Big East's media rights, league sources told ESPN.

..........................

The Big East's new $2 million per team deal is less than what the seven departing Catholic schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova -- are projected to earn when they form their own league, sources told ESPN. Fox Sports is closing on a deal with the Catholic schools worth about $3 million for each, sources said.

The new league, yet to be formed, is expected to have 12-to-14 members. The most likely candidates to join the Catholic schools, sources have told ESPN, are Butler, Xavier, Creighton, Dayton, Saint Louis, Richmond and VCU.

Going to 14 with no Gonzaga is a complete waste.

If we do go to 14 teams, I agree.  I don't think we will get past 12, but who knows?

• Memphis in the Hoop Seven? According to a report in the Philadelphia Inquirer, they were contacted, but also apparently chose to stay with their current/future Big East affiliation. If true, I’m not surprised they were contacted, or that they said “no thanks.” It makes sense to build the best basketball league you can build, regardless of whether or not a school plays big time football. I just don’t see a football school (including UConn and Cincinnati) making a decision based on hoops first. But I also say, “never say never…”

I agree 100%

Go to 12

I personally don't see 14 unless Fox wants more teams (and pay more money)

Could St. Mary's hang with the big boys if the C7 ever went to a west division?

This guy has been on the $;

So, looking into the very near future here’s our very best guess of the sequence of events for the Big East.
1. Sign main television deal with NBC, with secondary deals with CBS and perhaps TBS or Fox–and ESPN.
2. Announce that the break up for the Catholic 7, as well as Rutgers, Louisville and Notre Dame will officially begin on July 1, 2014.
4.  Announce that the Big East will retain its name, leaving the Catholic 7 group to come up with a new name.
5. Announce that East Carolina will be included as a full member, joining Tulane in 2014 as a full member.
6. Announce that future expansion is on hold (with Tulsa and Massachusetts as logical contenders) until 2015

Thanks for posting.  What was interesting was the potential of Excuse-Ucon series going forward.  It indicated that with Excuse playing us and possibly Gtown there would be no room in the Dome for the Ucon.  Interesting and helps me stomach playing Excuse if it removes Ucon from playing them and potentially us and Gtown as we would be looking to play national teams and not another from our region.

We will probably get most of the NCAA tourney credits as well as MSG for tourney. I am sure c7 will have to give up a bit to leave a year early.

I am just not sure why the Big East would want to keep the name though and not just sell it to c7

Really I would think only UCONN would want it, Cincinnati and So Fla probably don't give a crap

Tough to say. I do think all the Northern California and some Central Valley kids who don't go Pac-12 would have St. Mary's on their final list if they were in the new BE. And Randy Bennett does seem to do a good job of finding kids to play his style.

Their cause would be helped immensely if Oakland could actually get kids to graduate. There are guys at the playground next to my daughter's school who make the ball look like a yo-yo, but they'd rather smoke pot all day than go to class.

I like what I see above regarding Memphis. Too bad they opted for the Big (L)east rather than parking football elsewhere and joining us. If we are unafraid to pursue football schools, we should go balls out and invite BYU and UNLV, along with Gonzaga, Xavier, and Butler. Worst they could do is say no.

No football schools, been there done that! Get MSG and give up the BE name, provided we get a fair shake monetarily.

NO FB please unless at the level Gtown/Nova play.  FB has already destroyed the league once.  "fool me once-shame on you; fool me twice-shame on me.

The Big East is a quality brand that took years to build. Especially with all the changes that's happening, the name is the only thing BE has going for it. I thought the C7 had the rights to the BE name if they voted to disolve, does anyone know if this was true?
