Lavin coaching meter
« on: January 19, 2013, 05:01:47 PM »
This has been a hot topic lately, so I thought each game we could rate him from 1-10. 1 being Norm Roberts type ineptitude and 10 being John Wooden.

In today's game the only real issues I had were the following:
1. Had Obepka on the floor when it became obvious that Depaul was going to have to start fouling. Coach rectified this quickly and went offense / defense with him. Personally I would have gotten him completely out of there at that point.
2. Started to take the air out of the ball with the lead again, but was only for 3 or 4 possesions. Team started attacking again, which led to a couple bad shots, so sometimes you can't win.

The good:
1. Realized Greene was awful  / hurt and quickly pulled the plug on "the human circle"
2. I 100% disagreed with crazy small  lineup with Pointer / Garrett at the four, but they are using their quickness very well and as long as we don't start to get killed on the boards this seems to be working.
3. Realizing the very unpopular fact that we play better offensively and defensely w/o Obepka on the floor at this time. At the moment, and I am fan, Obepka is a one trick pony and limiting his minutes has worked very well. I guess that was what Lavin was referring to with that quote.
4. Quickly got Garrett out when the press had him throwing the ball around like Nuke Laloosh at the beginning of Bull Durham.

Overall grade would be a solid 8

One note
Obepka played more than I thought 24 minutes,  probably the right amount at this point

Okay, I'll bite.

Solid 8.

What I Liked:
That we switched defenses at one point in the second half.   Really slowed Depaul down until the final minutes.
Liked that coach seemed to get in our guys faces a few mins into the game about crashing the boards.  From there on out they battled on the glass.  First couple mins of the game it looked like we would get killed on boards.

What I questioned:
Not using the bench in the second half.  He's done this a couple times this year; where he uses Felix, Jones, or Marco for 2-3 mins in the first half.  I'd like to see that same kind of substitution pattern say midway through the 2nd half.  Dom, Branch, and Harrison all played 38 minutes tonight, that's a whole lot in a very up tempo game.  Halfway through the second half he could have given them each a breather, one at a time.

I thought the 6 guys he played in the 2nd half gave us the best chance to win. Personally I was ok with shorter bench. Would like Jones to start getting more run as well, but I thought Lavin played the best guys to get the win.

Ill go with a 7.

Like:
Offense looked better until a stretch in the second half. Like Desco mentioned I liked the switching of the D a little bit In the second. Wasn't afraid to get on the guys and gets a big applaud for sitting Phil down.

Dislike:
Timeout management and having Dom be the primary ballhadler against the break.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

Turned the ball over but he goes North to South

True, and thats his best and worst trait, hes not afraid to attack.

Agree with a 7. Not sure if it's all poor ame management at the end of the game or just lack of control as to what's going on, on the court.  But again, there were maby positives.

Echo your question..would like to see our bench guys get some PT in 2nd half...

I too give him an 8.

What I liked:
-Like everyone else, I'm glad he sat Greene.
-I'm not sure if it's something Lavin preached, but I like the way Branch looked for his shot early and often in the first half.
-He was very animated on the sidelines even when we were up big. He lets guys hear about mistakes.

Dislikes:
-Not a fan of not having enough timeouts when we get to crunch time. I think that contributed to us letting them back in it because he had a long stretch of bad play with no timeouts called.
-Obekpa being out there when it was foul shot time. Even worse that we passed the ball to him. But seriously, how does a Div. 1 player shoot 24% from the line?

Overall great game from coach and staff IMO.

I'll give a 1 to all the great fans who think they have the basketball skills and knowledge to evaluate coach. Louie in his day would have been destroyed by some of the characters on this board.

You don't think Louie was getting killed in fan conversations.  He had his limitations.

Don't have to have basketball skills yourself to evaluate a coach. And it's a game, we are fans, this is a web site it's what we do. If you don't like it-just a suggestion-find another hobby than reading these boards-this coming from someone who is very happy to have coach Lavin as I am sure just about everyone on this board is-doesn't mean you have to agree with everything he does and doesn't mean you or I are right they are just opinions. Lighten up-I'm sure coach can handle a little criticism it's part of the job. He has been through a lot worse as we all know.

In his later years, Looie was one and done several years in a row on his home court in the BE tourney. I am sure if this board was around then, there would be ample criticisms.

Best thing Lav did was call the two early timeouts and rip into the team. They come out with an intensity the likes of which DePaul could not contend wit.

Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

If 1 is Norm level ineptitude and 10 is John Wooden I'm going with 6.5/7 but there's room for improvement with his in game coaching...most of his points come from getting decent talent in here

Agree Choz.  I commented on that in an earlier post.  After the second TO in particular, he was REALLY animated, and it made a difference.

This big east road win earns Hollywood a 10 on the coaching meter.  Not overly concerned with the minutiae.  :)

I'd give him a 10 if this game was against Cuse or Louisville.  Against DePaul, I give him a 7.
