I don't usually give observations but there were some things I saw last night that were notable.

1.  Does Harrison have a hand injury?  He must have had the ball slip out of his hands like 4 or 5 times, including that missed layup.

2.  How bad is your Center's confidence that when he gets a rebound, late in the game, 2 feet from the basket he looks to pass it out instead of going straight up with it?  Then misses a chippy.

3.  When Jakar is cold from outside, it is ugly.  And he didn't stop.

4.  Rebounding was bad, and free throws in clutch time were not good (except for Dom)

5.  Was an exciting game.  The defense could not get a stop through a big chunk of the second half, but really buckled down late and in OT.  I wish they could play with that intensity all game.

6.  Is it just a homerism that I feel like someone on the other team always becomes unstoppable from 3 against us?

I thought overall we got the benefit of some truly horrible calls. That being said I thought the 5th foul was a pretty weak call.

Did you think there was a no-call for over and back at the end of RT?

We did, Branch hooked one of their guards when he was on offense, and they called the foul on Depaul. Refs are too damn old.

I know I wasn't asked, but I don't think that was really a "no call." The ball was being swatted all over the place, it was hard to tell who was really touching it, and the ref's really don't want to blow the whistle those last few seconds. So I guess by that measure it was a no call lol.

There was a huge NO CALL that DePaul benefited from.  It was off a missed shot scramble, the game was 58-55 SJU, and Harrison seemed to have possession and just got bowled over.  Lost the ball, ensuing scramble gave the ball to DePaul who got it to Morgan at the top of the key and he drained a 3 to tie it at 58-58.  The tough kid he is Harrison came down and drained a 3 to put SJU back up 3.  But that was a potential 5 point swing as Harrison should have gotten 2 free throws with SJU up 3 instead of the game being tied.  Not sure that was mentioned.

After the 3 even Welsh on the TV broadcast joked about needing shoulder pads for this one...

Regarding Obekpa, I really think he was in traffic and didn't want to get fouled (for obvious reasons).  To me both a sign of his high bball IQ and his obvious need to improve from the line.

He also had a couple of nice passes during the game. I think he rushes his foul shot, when you see him slow it down and relax at the line he tends to hit his shots. I think he has a kind of sweet shot, there are just some things that need to be worked out. Such as falling away from the basket, shooting near the arc.

So he was relaxed 7 times and rushed 23 times? Sweet shot? Some things to be worked out? That is like saying the Titanic had a slight iceberg issue. Once they figured out that problem they were good to go.

Jakarr needs to go to the basket. That's how he will take his game to the next level. A jumper shouldn't be his go to move.
If he goes strong, he can draw contact, and he can the other team's bigs in foul trouble. No one else on our team can do what he can, so it's gotta be him.

I think thats a pretty apt description of the Titanic's issues.

Seriously though, he misses a whole lot of shots, but his stroke just doesn't look to bad to me. A lot of the time its just a little tweak that can make a huge difference.

the refereeing always looks shaky from tv and the stands.  even looking at the replay, they blew the call right before regulation ended.  jakarr was in the act of shooting at .01.  clear as day.  the refs made up for the blown call, i think, for calling the blatant foul against depaul early in the OT.  either way, the bad refereeing was even handed.

Newsie I didn't see the end of the game so I can't comment.

But I saw Harrison just get run over on that play lose the ball and it turned into a 3 pointer for DePaul.  I was just incredulous how that was not a foul.

The game ended too late to discuss this morning when I got home and I am a little slow in work this AM.  I thought the game was exciting.  Blow outs are easier on the heart but this kept you riveted to the game.  Every call seemed crucial.  Props to the students for their energy and loudness--keep it up!  Carnesseca reminded me of games in Alumni Hall from a few decades ago.  Good crowd given the forecast the 9PM tip off.

Glad to see the team pick it up after D'angelo fouled out.  They need to believe in themselves and not watch D do it.  Great protection of the ball as T/O's were down and glad to see the team not start off slow but be ahead at the 1st media TO.  Achilles Heel is still the FT line.  Everyone contributed something.  Jakarr had some very positives but showed he will need another year before considering a leap (which is great for the team).

While I did not see replays the refs seemed to be having an off night.  there was some rough play going on.  Young loves the forearm shove to clean out on his drives.  D'angelo got hammered and floored by 2 guys mid way in 2nd half in going for a rebound.  i think the non call upset him and may have contributed to his fouling out.  (His hand appears to be hurting as someone also noted.)  But D showed captain leadership urging the team on from the bench.  I would have loved to seen the last second foul on Jakarr on replay.  I thought he would get a call for a shove BEFORE the shot and get 2 with the double bonus.  Alas Steve Honzo (for oldtimers) was not the ref and it did not go our way.  The best was in OT when Sir was flagrently fouled and the refs had to go to the replay.   After looking at it one of the refs walked over to the DePaul coach and gave an expression/shrug that appeared to be apologizing for the call.

What more can be said about the Dominator--he came through in OT.  Continues to be judicious in shot selection; despite making a 3PTer, he had a similar open shot but put the ball on the floor and nailed a 10 footer.  shots 4-5/has another double double.  Keep it up.

Hopefully this rivalry can thrive in the C7.  What better than the 2 Vincentian schools from the rival big cities facing off.  Maybe they should create a trophy or something (a President's Cup?) that would go to the winner to really cement the relationship.

I mentioned this on the previous page.  I watched it a few times.  They were both going up for a rebound.  It looked to me like Harrison was going straight up and the other guy was moving, and just slammed him.  Even funnier was that as soon as he stood up, someone tripped him and he hit the deck again.  I remember thinking, "how do you hit the deck twice and not hear a whistle?".  Sort of like the charge/block no call when both guys are laying on the deck?

For what it is worth, they discussed this on the broadcast.  It really appeared to me that Jarkar was fouled twice.  There was a reach in with a split second on the clock and then he was hit as he was shooting, after the clock expired.  They had a clock in the window, (like a split screen), to show the time as he was getting fouled.  They said it wasn't the official clock, so take that for whatever it is worth.  Their conclusion, and I thought it was valid, was if he blew the whistle because of the reach-in, then Jakar should have shot the free-throws.  If the whistle was blown on the contact at the act of shooting, then it was after the clock expired.  It appeared to me that the ref was whistling the latter (contact during the shot), and that was after the game was over.    Just my 2 cents.
