All I know is, Lavin had us in the NCAAs in the only season he's coached us; and we are in the conversation this, his 2nd season.  Until this season is completed, I can't complain about the results.

As for the overall trajectory of the program, how can anyone dispute that we are better off than where we were when he took over.  I don't even get down when we lose a recruit because Lavin has done better than I had expected in both his first two full recruiting classes.  I trust that he will continue to bring in players.

"with what  he was given to work with?" what does this mean?

An irrelevant program, overhauling an entire roster with the only real player returning a Div. II point guard. In year 2 of a rebuilding process, Lavin's got us 6-4 in the BE with a lot of promising young talent. But, because we're not as good as Syracuse, our fan base will just bitch and moan about substitution patterns they wish they had seen in a 12 point loss to Georgetown.

6-4 now but at seasons end, which is all that counts, do you realy believe we will be over 500? We have had the benefit of the easier part of the schedule to date?  And wait, why are youbshocked with minimal success with so many top 50 recruits?

There's the negativity we love from Realfan. They are young top 50 recruits. Next year we are a tourney team or I will eat my words.

Oh wait is that how it is?  If one states the obvious, they are negative.  Once again, the Realfan reference?  Calling me negative 212, would be like calling you stupid? I happen to think your ideas are quite idiotic at times but I don't come out and attack you for it.  I tolerate all opinions on here even though I disagree with many.  And what is negative about stating the obvious?  Have we not had the easier part of the schedule to date, not aving played Louisville, Syracuse or Marquette? Do we not have top 50 talent which while young, one leads the nation in blocked shots and the other leads the BE in freshman scoring?  Where do you see negativity? Are you sure that you and booboo are not Red Storm lady cheerleaders?

I'm pretty good at identifying posters under different names and I think I have a special appreciation for Realfan's rants and identifying them.

That being said I'm not so sure that Linda is Realfan. Their opinions might be similiar but their writing styles are different

Where has all the bravado gone where some posters were saying after Lavin was hired how much fun it was going to be when we got revenge and beat down the Cuse's, G'towns andLouisville's of the BE? Well we get a chance over the next week or so. Here is hoping we don't have to wait till 2025-26 to get our revenge on the teams that have regularly beaten us over these last oh so many years.

+2...

Let's remember where we were.  Im younger, followed the team since Lopez first year and from what ive experienced, i dont think we could do better than Lavin. What he's done from a player and talent standpoint is beyond what i could imagine.  I remember after Norm was fired, Francesa on the radio saying we had to have a Coach who could get the city player to stay in town and found myself agreeing with him.  We got 1 player in Norm's 6 year tenure that was top 100 and that was Burrell (2 guys...i forgot the legendary Dele Coker).

Lavin got the job and not only got the best city player and first round pick but players from Cali, Texas, Detroit, Ohio and Chi town and 8 out of 9 of them were top 100.  And he didnt coach a game in years.  Unheard of, he's the best we gonna do, enjoy him while we have him.  He does have his his flaws but we arent North Carolina, and if Lavin was flawless he wouldnt be here for long.

No offense but I don't think ANY of the talk after this game is the sky is falling.  What people ARE talking about is a guy who was splintered on the bench all year came in and played well.  And people are wondering why he wasn't playing prior especially in light of the coaches comments.  Its a discussion about yesterdays game.  I think everyone should stop labeling the majority of the board one way or the other.  Just creates too much BS

There are two things I'm sure of in my own pea brain and I can not be dissuaded from them:

1) If Marco Godard, Mr. Jones and Felix Unger were getting the lions share of the minutes and we weren't in the midst of a 5 game conference winning streak, our poster base would be clamoring for more minutes for Phil, Amir and the other displaced player of your choice.  Why you ask?  Because the most popular player on a losing football team is the backup quarterback.

2) A majority white fanbase will show a disproportionate amount of affection for the one white player on a basketball team primarily composed of black players.  Why you ask?  Several sociological and anthropological reasons.

Ain't human behavior fascinating?

While there may be some truth to your second point regarding some fans there may be a more prevalent reason for a perceived affinity toward Marco-on a team bereft of outside shooting if nothing else he has the reputation of being a player whose strength is outside shooting. Just a thought.

Looking at our 6-4 record, there are 3 ways of looking at it.

1.) We are a middle/top half BE team. A young team who have finally turned the corner. NCAA tournament on the horizon if we keep it up. (This is the positive outlook)
2.) We are a middle of the pack BE team. We have won 5 of our last 6 BE games. We look like a completely different team than we did early on. We benefited from the easy part of our schedule, but 10-8 or 11-7 is not out of the question. NIT team, or NCAA bubble team (Realistic).
3.) We only have 6 wins because of the easy schedule we just played. We won't finish .500 in the BE. We have not turned any corner. (This is you.)

Call me stupid all you want, but while Obekpa may lead in blocks, he has tons of work to do on defense and offense. Jakarr needs a lot of polishing.

How nice of you to bring race into it.

Actually I dont care if Marco is white, black, spanish, asian, purple, green or from Mars.  He can shoot.  Something the vast majority of our team cannot.  End of story

I don't like the reference to the " white fan base".  Most fans just want to " win". I have to believe that race discrimination went out the window decades ago at east in this part of the country.  I believe that Marco adds much to the team if utilized properly. But if you take a kid who is a great shooter but is not lightning quick and can't create his own shot and put him into Lavins system of one on one basketball, is it not obvious the kid is not going to perform to his potential? Now for all the haters who are ready to jump on me for this tatement, I am not condemning Lavins playing style, I am saying that Marcos style does not fit the staffs offensive philosophy.

That's the point, I would never call you stupid if I disagreed with you as you shouldn't call me negative for having an opinion.  But the players who are most labeled as " young", lead the nation and Big East in different categories.  Our Sophs have logged more minutes then most seniors on most teams. I never stated "we have not turned any corner" I just stated that the schedule is getting tougher now and the results may not be as good as our current record indicates.

Posting on this site is getting tiring as I have to defend every post I make., get called Realfan and then negative.  I actually believe we had made progress in that we are now winning the games we are supposed to win, just not ones (albeit a surprise) where the talent is equal or better, but that would be on the staff.  Have to admit that I am disappointed with our recruiting results this year as real needs will once again be with us next year.

We only have 2 ships and still some time to go.  We could end up with Rysheed or Severe and some other big guy and fill our needs very appropriately.  Even the Hall found and unknown transfer from southern Illinois in Gene Teague that absolutely killed us.  Everybody was disappointed with our recruiting class early last year too.  One area I don't doubt Lavin is on the recruiting trail.  We've had some bumps, but he has still recruited better than anybody could possibly have imagined here at SJU.  Not sure why people don't think we will land at least 1 or 2 very good players.  Some people just pumping negative vibes to get a rise I think.

2) A majority white fanbase will show a disproportionate amount of affection for the one white player on a basketball team primarily composed of black players.  Why you ask?  Several sociological and anthropological reasons.

Ain't human behavior fascinating?

Wrong about racism being long gone...but let's move on.

Lavin's system is not one on one.  That may be the end result because it is not yet mastered by our players but it is not Coach's philosophy.  The biggest problem in the current scheme is that there is no offensive presence inside.  If your big doesn't post up, you can't get the ball to him inside.  And when you do get him the ball, he's not really able (yet) to do anything with it.  CO was a prized recruit with great shot-blocking ability, but a liability on offense.  He will develop.  I think Lav felt that Gift was going to give us enough on the inside this year and wanted to give him another year to work on that part of his game.  A sacrifice this year, in return for bigger dividends next year.

As for Marco, I would love to see him continue to give us what he gave us in the Georgetown game.  He looked much better than he had in previous games.  I think if he and DLo are on the floor together, one of them will get some open looks.

I always wonder why posters (and this isn't directed specifically at you Linda) think that a coach spends a year or more recuiting a kid, gives him a schollie, and then decides he just doesn't like the kid and will bury him on the bench, even though the coach knows that the kid can contribute.  Coaches see more than we do---whether in practice or in games.  Even though I record every game and watch it again (except some brutal losses), I know that the coaching staff watches more film and know more than I do (Hell, even Linda knows more than I do).  Therefore, while I may not agree with everything they do, I give them the benefit of the doubt that they have a good reason for doing it.
