Our staff...
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:31:43 AM »
This topic was lightly mentioned in the other thread about Lavin...

Personally, I would get rid of them all except Rico. I only say keep Rico because of a couple of the NBA guys I know have told me he is very good at individual work with the players.

Coach Lavin desperately needed an assistant to somewhat fill the role and responsibilities that Coach Dunlap had behind the scenes. It has clearly not happened this year and who over was responsible for game prep and scouting did awful work this year.

Agree on the concept, disagree on who you kept.

The Dunlap/Martin position should have went to a Pete Gillen type coach. An ex-head coach that is in the twilight of his career. Major Xs/Os type guy.

Hearing so much about Rico being a negative force that I wonder. That said, I don't think we have a bright, energetic and strategically capable staff. Just my opinion. I know Pmg is not a fan of Chiles, but I would give him a pass, because he is at least actively recruiting. Maybe I'm wrong on that, just my gut feeling. Moe Hicks, on the other hand, DOB or not, ???

This is more about having a staff that have defined roles...

Coach Dunlap was not replaceable, there are not many coaches at any level that can do what he did at St. John's.

That being said, we don't have a solid X&O assistant and we don't have a coach that does that scouting that can get on the court and actually demonstrate his game plan to the team.

Rico is not going anywhere, Coach Lavin loves him and they are close. The rest of the guys are easily replaced.

Agree. Cali connection is irritating and unnecessary as well.

I agree completely.   It is 100% necessary.
But it seems like such an obvious move, that I doubt it'll actually happen.

FYI I said something similar  in December and got a lot of flack for it.  , And, I know PMG and Paultz weren't drinking the koolaid, but other people were blindly defending Martin, Chiles, Rico.   How's that working out for us?

Would it be so crazy to ask Lavin to do the game prep? Isn't he the coach? Other than say cute shit to the media, he hasn't shown that he's good at this.

We don't need to hire an Xs and Os assistant. We need to hire a coach who knows how to coach. The Xs and Os guy should be LAVIN! He's the F'n coach. What the Hell does he do?

Most of these posters flip flop so much, it is pathetic. First year, NCAA tourney, second season cancer, third season dad dies. Have there been bumps in the road and some issues, yes BUT ever program deals with this. People seem to forget, we are not the DUKE, Kentucky's of the world these days. We are building a solid foundation and I would expect the older posters to have some patience in this "instant gratification" world we now live in.

Losing Dunlap as now showing how much it hurt but this season needs to be a learning situation and lets see how they team grows into next season.

i've questioned what hicks is doing.  right now, it seems he's only taking up space.  i thought he'd be an nyc pipeline.

no one complained about the recruiting before.  true, we're not going after mcdonald a-a's...

isn't that a problem to anyone?

it isn't the x's and o's...it's the players.

Are expectations higher under Lavin than Norm?
Then timeline should be sped up.

From an investment/return perspective, we are paying major $ for this staff compared to previous regime. Fair to expect decent results? Why not?

Sure, but it also depends on your time horizon.  You want instant results or are you prepared to wait 3-5 years for your return?   Most people looking for instant gratification or a "quick profit" end up getting burned...

Never implied "instant" results, but IMO next year's results should be evaluated to see if we are on the right track.

Are we going to be good next year and year after then take a step back for another 2 years.  That's kind of the cycle I'm seeing setup.  Are teams only good with the upperclassmen I guess is my question.
