?? on recruiting
« on: August 29, 2013, 08:38:39 PM »
Sorry I can't remember which year(s),  but people were talking about a year(s) that would be the start or something good on the recruiting front. I'm just wondering which class that was.

Thanks

'15 is the next BIG class in terms of the first Lavin group graduating.

But as has been discussed the '14 class is going to need frontcourt players as a priority.

I hope so.  Would be a good time for it.  Kill 2 birds with one stone.  To tell the truth, I have no idea what the staff has up their sleeve for 14' class.  We shall see.

Are any key recruits we are after still available.  Seems that we have struck out on every target.  And Don't say Whitehead, he seems Dead set on leaving NYC.  I wonder what is causing us to lose so many targets....YOu can't say playing time, because Cuse, Louisville, Duke etc....all offer far less opptys.

Kids are looking to play in the post season and that's what the big programs offer.  Lavin is OK in recruits' living rooms but getting there is the key.  Eventually the roster numbers game should free up some kids but we seem way behind in locating them.  We have plenty of guards as usual but big guys are critical to balance the roster which is the key to attaining stability going forward.

Lavins first year was the start of something good on the recruiting front. He had a great class ,albeit had some ineligibilities. So far he always delivered. I must admit I was worried the last 2 years and am worried now. On paper things don't look good for 14. But Lavin has always come through. Maybe hell bring back a 7 foot euro player LOL. There is always the JC root. What is questionable is that no one knows if Sampson or CO will return , which is something potential recruits may be asking themselves.

Difference with those programs is sustained success. We recruited the current roster based on the buzz that Lavin was able to create. To sustain recruiting success and take the next step - we need to show some results. if, no when, we have a good season this year -- we will be in position to take next step.

This is in fact THE reason no elite big men have signed with St Johns for 2014. Most recruits and advisors rightfully believe that Obekpa is going to return for 2014. They look at draft projection boards and dont yet see Sampsons name listed very high. That may change as the season progresses but right now too much uncertainty about Jakarr.

If the team has a great season this year, Lavin should get whoever he wants in 2015 class

The silver lining may be if CO and Sampson stay, well have Jones and Dom.,we wont need an elite big for 14 ,just a solid 4 year player. I believe, however 1 will go to the NBA.

This is the first mention I've ever seen of this site on either JJ or redmen.com. I would have thought that if it was so elite, people would have referenced it at some point.

just curious, what connections does Whitesell possibly have with regards to recruiting?

My initial but completely uninformed thoughts were that he'd be a co-closer on big men since he's the expert, and he might have some Midwest connections, particularly Chicago.
