Individual match ups make for fun conversation. To me rebounding & taking care of ball is essential against that zone. Syracuse always has great length and often deflects or steals passes, resulting in run outs. It is crucial for our guards to avoid lazy passes and sloppiness. We have to limit easy buckets.

Purely for fun here.  Takeaway from the exercise is that we conceivably could have better players and more depth for the first time in ages.  Our backcourt is better than theirs, their frontcourt is better than ours.

Will come down to execution, and on paper Boeheim v Lavin is the most one-sided matchup in the discussion.

Still a tough matchup for us.  Grant, Fair, and Christmas can match our front court athleticism and length..easily..

We better box out better than we did against Fordham or we will see a lot of Fair and Grant..Can't rely on athleticism alone to get possession on defensive end.

I think we matchup favorably in the backcourt.. Our depth will help us..  Need to run...Don't be a afraid to push.. Need to maximize possessions and shots.
Somehow the staff needs to get the guys to stop leaving their feet on every shot fake...it cost us Penn State game and, although we didn't pay for it, we did it a ton against Fordham...other teams know it and is part of their offensive approach...OTOH, we don't do it enough...

And we need to avoid falling into the trap of being too high for the game, being overly aggressive and macho

I'm watching last years game on YouTube, the Johnnies played tough with them for about 30 minutes until a Triche dunk really shifted momentum. Things that get lost a little from last years loss: no Branch, no Lavin and they've added Sanchez, Hooper and Jordan. I think if they play the right way they can pull this off. Maybe I'm crazy though.

Syracuse only beat Fordham by 15. We beat them by 46.  So, by simple math, we beat Syracuse by 31  (46-15).  Seriously, I think we can beat Cuse.  If Sanchez really received his wake up call against Fordham and can continue playing with the same level of intenstiy against Cuse, and Karr, Obekpa and Dom each have solid games (Dom especially, who seemed to wilt/implode last season against the tougher teams), I think our backcourt can be the winning difference.  Who knows, this game might be Jordan's coming out party the way Harkless had his against Providence when he tied the record for most points scored by a freshman in his debut BE game.  Not necessarily drinking that Kool-Aid, but I see it.

Would you rather have Fair Grant and Christmas or Sampson Sanchez and Obekpa?

Fair is great. Grant is as good as Sampson. Maybe better. Obekpa is way better than Christmas.

My thoughts exactly.  Fair is the best of the 6, Christmas the worst.  Grant is probably a little better than Sampson at this stage, and Sanchez is TBD.  Cuse has the edge.

While we are here...
Ennis Cooney Gbinije or  Jordan Harrison Pointer ?

Talent wise we are right there with almost any team, but the real matchup that could be the difference  here is Jim Boeheim vs Steve Lavin, in which they have a huge advantage in terms of in-game coaching.

It's funny you should have heard Syracuse fans during the 80's and early 90's when Boeheim had Addison and Washington and Douglas and Seikaly and Coleman and Stevie Thompson and Billy Owens etc. and would always seem to lose to the Rhode Island's of the world (1988 2nd round) or a David Robinson and Navy on their home floor (2nd round 1986) or the infamous loss to Richmond in 1991(1st round) at College Park when Syracuse became the first 2 seed to lose to a 15 in the post 64 team field of the NCAA's.

Growing up in Syracuse country the criticism of him constantly being outcoached was unbelievable.  He could do no right and now the guy is a legend and all those close calls and 30 win seasons are now looked upon with great reverence when at the time they couldn't stand him because they said he would always get whipped by what was perceived to be a less talented but better coached team.

I thought the whole country is Syracuse country, including NYC.

I hope the team from Queens with players from Texas to Ohio quietly brings their A game to MSG for two weekends in a row.  SJU players have to show us a toughness that we have not yet seen.  Otherwise, they may need to hit 18 shots in a row.

The verdict is still out on Lavin.

Why is the verdict still out?  He's been coaching over a decade with a winning record everywhere he's been and I think only missed the ncaa's 3 times in his career...

I had a great time at the game Saturday.  Hoping to have fun Sunday. If I have a Johnny Flynn like experience instead I won't be happy.
