I think the nature of transfers and college basketball has shifted where if anything goes down, some guys run.

I think Rysheed is stronger than your average kid, and seems very loyal to the program. He's had a rough start to his season, and I'm sure adjusting to college life has been tough for him. It's unfortunate we speculate so much, but that's the nature of the game these days. When the going get's tough, most kid's leave.

SJU has had our fair share of transfers the last few years, but I think that played more into how our team was so depleted from talent, Lavin had to take risks his first few years to get players in. We are no longer in that position and I think the quality/attitude of our student athletes will continue to get better each year. No more reaching for the Pelle's and Nuri's of the world, and more finding guys that fit the system, Lavin's style of coaching, and want to be here.

I think Rysheed comes out tomorrow and goes for 15 and 5, gets to the rim a lot, and shoots about 6-8 FT's.

How many players have left the team, and how many were any good?

Polee
Nuri
Amir Garrett
Omari Lawrence

I think the term "good" needs to be better defined for the above question.

I think the term "good" needs to be better defined for the above question.

I was just running off the list, I don't necessarily think they were all good players.

For my money though Quincy R could have helped, as could Ron Roberts.
He's no great shakes, but we were so shorthanded coach's second year that Polee would have been a big help that year - but after that I doubt he would've played.
For the same reason Nuri would've been very helpful that year.   We needed bodies

Regardless of ability though, Amir's transfer bothers me more than all of the others.   No one says it, but he must have been told to leave.   We needed room for jordan.    That's the way of the world I guess, but I think Amir represented the university very well while he was here, and seemed like a good person.  He deserved to be part of a winning team, like the one we might have this year.

The part about Amir is untrue. It's been said by both him, Lavin, and members on this board that he came into SJU intending to stay only 2 years. He was going to give the basketball thing a try, but if it didn't work out the first two years, would focus on baseball.

I dont know if you can be so sure about that. He is a California kid who plays professional baseball in the off season. Not much time for home and family when you are playing college ball on the other side of the country.

That's the first I've ever heard that.   He always talked like he would be here 4 years, then try baseball.
And if true, it doesn't make much sense because he didn't leave to play baseball, he transferred to another D1 basketball program.

If Amir didn't leave how were they going to sign Rhysheed?   I don't believe that is a coincidence.

I like Lavin a lot, but if I ever get a chance to talk to him it's probably going to look a lot like that scene from the first season of the Wire..

Desco:  Where's Garrett at?... Where's the boy Lav?
Lavin:  Desco, shut your mouth
Desco:  Where's Garrett? That's all I wanna know.
Desco: Where's Garret? Where the f*%# is Garrret? Huh? Huh? Lav? Lav? Look at me! Where the f*** is Garrett? HUH!?
Lavin:  A'ight, you stupid motherf*^$er, you made your decision.

...and then you'll find me hanging from a basketball net somewhere

Exactly.  Amir is a smart young man.  If anybody with half a brain discussed this with him, they would have laid out the possibility of playing pro ball overseas for 10 years, with the chance of one day starting and making solid coin; or take the guaranteed money from the Reds, and play on the chance that his arm holds up as he moves through the minors, and then making it past year 4 in MLB to get the biggest contract he will see, way beyond basketball.  I would have rolled the dice too and got down to it on the mound.

bball purist, I would agree with you - I would make that decision too, but the odd part is he's not playing baseball fulltime.     He's not in any winter league right now, he's sitting out his transfer year for the Cal State Northridge basketball team.
Not a college near the Reds training facility in Arizona, or any of their minor league affiliates.

My point was  when reading some of the posts one might get the impression coach Steve either chases players off the team or can't hold on to them. I think he was faced having to recruit an entire team at once. He then got Sampson who was really pissed to re-commit. That was some job. We now have a deep team with talent and they seem to be a good bunch of guys.  My feeling is some posters here just looking to knock the coach, or trying to get under the skin of teams fans. If some voice concern that we have no recruits yet for 2014 that would be most understandable. I'm not telling anyone on the board what to post. I just don't get some of the criticism.

As a young power pitcher with a live arm, he is undoubtedly on an planned annual innings limit.  He probably was not going to be playing winter ball this season anyway.

I agree with whoever said the reason for Felix playing was Lavin realized Hooper is not going to contribute meaningful minutes.

Why would coach activate Felix for one game against Youngstown State when he has three juniors who have played over 20 mpg their entire careers and Dom Pointer who could easily slide to the two?  Doesn't make any sense at all. The kid played ten minutes.
