I never knock coach Steve but the work in progress crap I don't like. How about just saying we are doing a poor job right now, with we the key word. Jay had a little skinny freshmen point guard last year that he used big minutes right away, and he kicked our ass. We have some talented players that are green. Coaches win with those kind of players defining parameters with the bench being the enforcer. Maybe it should be Keady giving performance analysis. He made players better with nasty medicine and they all loved him. He won titles with some ordinary players who were very clear on what was expected. Sampson would be 5-11 by now. Getting upset, gotta go.

Lavin's opening comments in this video are alarming to me. He again talks about February as the time to evaluate this team. Then he says it's a "work in progress" because we are still working in "new pieces". This just makes no sense. The only new pieces who play substantial minutes are Jordan and Sanchez. And while they are integral parts of our success, it's freakin January! We have had 3 months to acclimate these "new pieces" (actually even more than 3 months, wasn't the Europe trip supposed to help speed this process up??).

Then he says something that I think Theo touched on in another thread. He talks about how our depth allows us to play different types of lineups and styles (ex. Going "big", playing multiple guards, etc.) which allows us to "match up" to our opponent any given game. I HATE that he considers this a good thing. As Theo mentioned, all good programs have an identity that they ALWAYS play with and they dictate their style of play and take it to the opponent no matter how they play. Syracuse doesn't scratch the 2-3 zone because they're facing a team of all 3 point shooters, VCU doesn't call off the Havoc because the other team has 5 ball handlers. You play to your strength at all times regardless of the opponent and hopefully coach it up well enough to get the most out of your players and win games. Lavin has HIS players, they are experienced and supposedly ready to takeoff, yet this team still doesn't have an IDENTITY. It's mind boggling. Players will never find a rhythm with the constant shuffling of lineups and lack of set roles.

Hopefully this is all part of a master plan and he keeps mentioning Feb. because that is when he plans to settle on style of play/lineup. Just hope that it won't be too little too late....

Oh, interesting.

That would seem to contradict the posters who claim Amir left happily to go focus on baseball.   The holes in that theory are becoming quite obvious: he isn't playing baseball full-time; he's on another D1 basketball team; and now he's calling coach Lavin a liar.   Hmm, could it be TGAPL forced a good kid out of the program?   
Nah.  That would be a reasonable inference.  We prefer to live in lala land.

it seems like as each day goes by, the luster of Lavin is really wearing off. I'm still happy he is our coach, but the program is not as rosy as I thought 2-3 months ago.

I agree, I feel that way too.
But I also know that things could turn around in a hurry if we went on a winning streak, and then found out almost the whole team is returning.    If we were to beat Georgetown and Villanova, in just 8 days the perception would be 180 degrees from what it is now.

Amir played well against g-town lat year. Not a post player . But he would play physical

  Kids get forced out of programs all the time.  I have no insider knowledge about the Amir situation, and honestly, I really don't care.    He wasn't very good btw... I'm sure he was a nice boy though..  Where is he playing on this team?

College coaches lying?  I think it is a prerequisite for any D1 job, actually.    Non issue to me.. though I'm sure it will be beaten to a bloody pulp on here.

After reading your post boo, I do have to agree. That's an excellent point, all modern major D1 hoop coaches have lie at some point. I'm sure there are a few that don't, Mark Few, Coach K..etc, but for the most part it's part of the job. You also had excellent points about Amir and his role with this squad. I don't see really any minutes for him on this team.

Desco -  I agree with what your saying as well, we could win tomorrow and then knock Nova off, and all of a sudden things seem a bit rosier too. I wouldnt be as down on the program right now if we had a solid rotation and were starting our best guys. I always get the feeling Lav is punishing someone, or playing head games with his rotations, and at some point, it comes down to winning basketball games.

Why force him out? He wasn't the worst. A few guys born in other countries I would have rather have lost

This admittedly is a pet peeve of mine, and I recognize that it's not a big issue by any means.  So I can understand why most don't waste time talking about it usually.  At the moment I'd much rather we defend the pick and roll better.
But I feel pretty strongly that when a player commits to a school, and he does what's asked of him (very key) - he should be entitled to stay on the team.
I'm not saying the coach has to play him, but he shouldn't be forced out before he graduates.    Amir wasn't disgruntled, he didn't miss practices ... he was just forced to leave so we could sign a talented freshmen. 

Amir transferred to Cal State Northridge, and is sitting out this season as per transfer rules.   He intends to continue the same schedule and join the reds minor league program after classes end in May.
Same thing he was doing here.  Him leaving had nothing to do with baseball.  But we needed him to leave so we could sign Jordan.   
I know other coaches do it, but this is one simple area where the college game doesn't have to be dirty.  And there are coaches out there who wouldn't have done that.
