Defense VS Creighton

You're the coach....

Man to Man or Zone?
Who matches up with who?
Press or No Press?
Do we slow down our offense to keep the ball away from them?

Interested to hear everyones opinions!

Dont think we can win this game in the half court so would like to see some press during different spurts. Need to have our center all the way back though, still dont understand why they are always pulled up so far resulting in easy buckets.

I think we have to play man. I think we have done an awful job of switching screens this season but I think this is a team we can afford to do so against as long as all our players are on the same page. They dont have a monster big man to kill our guards if they get switched on them. I still never want obekpa to switch a ball screen, Stay by the rim young man! Now the toughest part is deciding who to guard mecdermott with, I guess I would start Sanchez on him but im sure that will lead to two fouls. Dom will get his shot and I hope he is ready for it, cant bite at every ball fake or jab step, hell out smart the hell of you if he does.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

If we zone them they will beat us by 30.

Dont think we can use Gift or Obekpa too much as their bigs can shoot. I think Dom should/will play big minutes at the 4 because he matches up best with McDermott. Sanchez/Smapson at the 5 and we will need help from the guards with rebounding. Whoever is on Wragge can't help off him because he can shoot the lights out and doesnt need much room to get his shot off.

On offense I'd use a couple possessions early to see if we can pick up a foul or two on Doug by going straight at him with Sanchez/JaKarr

Can't zone them

I tend to think that the Sanchez-McDermott match up will be pretty good. Sanchez is a bit quicker than most big men and I think should be able to D him up. McDermott will still probably score 15-20 though

If McDermott only gets 15-20, I think we win.

I think you press them and fall back (token pressure).  If you press them and don't trap correctly they will eat us up alive.  They are smart with the ball.

In the half court, you have to go man.  Let McDermott get his 25 with Sampson/Sanchez/Dom guarding him, but make him work for it.  The other guys need to be up on Creighton and hope the pressure gets to them specifically on shots.  I think we have a shot but it will be a tough task.  I really like Jordan and Branch together because I feel as though they make the half court defense that much better.  I don't think Obekpa and Gift are going to see a lot of minutes because Creighton's big men aren't "traditional" big men.

But what do I know!

+1, but I think GG will get some minutes, if for anything else because Sanchez will likely find it hard to stay out of foul trouble.

I don't buy the strategy that we have to let McDermott get his 20+, SDSU beat Creighton earlier in the year and they did it by shutting him down.  I think we have the athleticism to do that.    Whoever is guarding DM though can't be giving help on other guys.   discipline on defense will be important.

And finding Wraggie in transition, that would be my second point of emphasis on defense.

I agree with everyone that Man to Man is the way to go.  I'd also like to see some full court pressure for some of the game.

To win, I think we have to dare them to shoot 2pt FG's.  That means extended pressure on the ball and on anyone out on the wings.  Our Rotations have to on point, but with the way we block shots, I think we need to force them to drive to the basket.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Gift get a shot on McDermott.  I think McD can muscle Dom in and around the paint.  Gift should be able to stay with him away from the basket, and casue at least a little resistance when he goes in the paint.

I'm also worried about Wragge.  If Sanchez is on McD, then it's Sampson on Wragge and that makes me very nervous.  I actually think Dom will see more time guarding Wragge than he does McD.

sanchez needs to avoid silly fouls.  if can stay in the game for most of 1st half we have a chance.

i actually would start Dom and have him on McDermott to start off.

This is what scares me about this game.

I think my last post to this got deleted, so let me try again.

I agree with you basically.  We do have the ability to guard him.  My point was more to guard him man to man with little help.  If you collapse on him or double he will make you pay worse.  Let him get his and guard everyone else.  His may be 10 or it may be 25 (although I think it would be closer to the higher number).  Don't let the other guys murder you from three point range.

According to ESPN, Creighton leads the country in assists per game (18.6), so they absolutely will find the open man if we double up on McDermott, and I don't think any one person on our team can shut down McDermott, so he will likely get his.  I think the key is to stop the others from killing us, like what Providence did to Creighton last week.

As 14.5 dogs the smart guys don't think it matters what D we play.

In just about every SJU game the announcers speak of Pointer's defensive skills, and how he **WANTS** to shut down the opposing teams best player. There is no bigger time we need that than right now. Looking forward to seeing Dom step up to the challenge.

I'm just really hoping Jakarr or Sanchez aren't on him, or they will both pick up fouls like it's going out of style and we need both of them to score to take this one home.

All in all, I think we win this game and turn a few heads in the process. With some solid momentum I think we can close out the season well. Also fwiw - I have zero inside knowledge, but I think if we end the season on a positive note, Jordan returns for next year understanding the position he and the team will be in.

Who knows, maybe -- man, no press, heavy dose of Dom on the POY.  Not sure who should guard wragge, he's big, but hangs on the perimeter and I don't think any of the forwards close out well.  Dom could guard him too, maybe Jordan (who would give some height but always have a hand in his face).  Probably will be sanchez/sampson because of his size, but that could be trouble.

They have a guy that's hit 77 three's already and it's not even the future Wooden award winner.  Only our three best ever 3 point shooters ( Patterson, Shaw and 3'lo ) have ever reached the 70's.  This looks like a nightmarish matchup.
