Lack of Size/ REBOUNDING
« on: November 20, 2014, 07:11:24 PM »
"If you have the right set of players, rebounding is the least important statistic in basketball, which might surprise people," St. John's coach Steve Lavin said, recounting words he said he heard from both Gene Keady and John Wooden. "

From Daily News Article.

I'll just leave that quote there.  Let it sink in.

"We're not going to be a dominant rebounding team this year because, like Providence last year, we're going with a small, quick, skilled team that can give our opponents problems." -Lavin

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nonsense.  Providence was the 2nd best rebounding team in the Big East last year.  Lavin also repeatedly using line that he's been coaching for 27 years, but that isn't true.  He counted the years he was in broadcasting.  He's spinning a whole lot of stuff at this point.  Fact check the guy on the most basic of levels and you'll find fallacies.

Why let facts get in the way?

Lavin spins more than a top, but I'm so used to it, nothing he says really means anything anymore.  I'll wait until we play our next several games to decide whether this team's utter lack of rebounding proficiency is meaningful for this "set of players".

If he means that total rebounding as a stat is somewhat insignificant then I agree, but you have to rebound missed shots or you will lose.

Jones needs to get more minutes. When we play teams with big 4's and 5's we are going to get destroyed on the boards. Seconds chance points are killer. Would love the issue with Adonis to be resolved too. At the very least he is a big body to come in and play some minutes. I think Jones with his size and bulk can be an decent rebounder, his shooting stroke isn't bad either from mid range.

This makes me sick.  I have a hard time believing Gene Keedy, a former NFL player, would agree with this.  Physical defense and rebounding are the foundation of good teams.

I would go to a coaching clinic that Lavin was speaking at and just do the opposite of whatever he says. You'll probably be more successful that way than by listening to and trying to imitate some of the best in the game

Real Question, How did Villianova rebound when they played with 4 guards? I don't remember it being a problem.

I'm going to hope this was taken out of context or something? Or did he expand on this point at all?

He over hypes players, and now he's telling is that rebounding is the least limportant statistic in basketball? So I guess that he thinks we're stupid and that we'll believe whatever he tells us.
Anyone got a BS reader, because he's a BS'er?   I can't stand the guy.

The only comment Gene Keady made that I recall about rebounding is "height is the most overrated statistic in rebounding" he may not be quoted online having said that, but I heard him say it.

Real Question, How did Villianova rebound when they played with 4 guards? I don't remember it being a problem.

They were outrebounded often, but they had three tenacious guard rebounders and Nardi who was okay.  They played seven guys (a crippled Jason Fraser and frosh Cunningham off the bench) sometimes they would go further to FR Shane Clark.

They started:

6'0 Lowrey
6'1 Nardi
6'2 Ray
6'4 Foye
6'8 Sheridan

We are actually bigger than them across the board.  That group played very good defense, though, and took advantage of the mismatches on offense.  Most teams were forced to go to their small lineups to match up.  They were outrebounded the last three games of the tournament that year:  25-23 against Arizona in round of 32, 34-30 against BC (Craight Smith and John Oates), and 49-36 to eventual national champs, Florida (Horford and Noah).

Nova's Final Four team in 2008-2009 wasn't much bigger:

6'1 Fisher (SO)
6'2 Reynolds (JR)
6'5 Stokes (SO)
6'6 Anderson (SR)
6'9 Cunningham (SR)

6'5 Redding (JR), 6'7 Clark (SR), and 6'8 Pena (SO)  off the bench.

Harrison and Jordan remind me of guys from those teams.  Obekpa would have been welcome on either of those teams.  Those Nova teams are the best mode for us this season:  small, guard-oriented, and not deep at all.  We just have to match their defensive intensity.

We've looked horrible with Oblockpa out of the game and it has me concerned.  This WCC thing might bight us in the a$$.

That I actually agree with however height certainly helps.
