Wow, there are some serious Aholes on this forum. Now it's Lavin's fault that some knucklehead smoked pot in violation of team rules? And that SJ didn't try to pull a fast one on the selection committee? Might want to ask Carneseca how many of his players were smoking pot back in his day; you might be surprised. Coaching is like herding cats. You just hope they don't rape or murder someone.

You crybaby "fans" deserve to suck for all of eternity. Where did you think this team would end up 10 months ago? Did anyone here think this was an NCAA Tourney team last spring?

Lav will be gone soon and you'll have some unknown guy take over and not see the Tourney again for a decade.

I do agree with most of this.

Bruin fan - think you didn't understand my post.  Obekpa's actions are on HIM.  The constant drama though, IMO, falls on Lavin, as he is the one who assembled this team.  And the lack of depth on the roster falls on him.

Last spring, I thought this team should make the tourney.  So did the league - we were picked 3rd.  Had we recruited properly, we would be better than a 9 seed.

Stjohnnie75 - Agree that we need a stud or two.  My point is that I think there are plenty of gettable coaches who can bring good players to St. John's.  Every coach besides Norm has.  I don't think it is Lavin or bust in terms of recruiting.

4 states have legalized it for recreational use.  Probably more than half have it for medical use.  Yet we go into the tournament without a center.

We are....
It is still illegal at the federal level, whether you feel it should be or shouldn't.

I'm all about states rights.  Even thought the south should have been allowed to retain slavery even though I'm vehemently, morally opposed.

Ain't it the truth though.  I used to pray with my fingers crossed every time I went on a road trip.

I don't know if anyone brought this up, but could this explain why D'Angelo had a black eye and Felix was out with an eye injury? Makes me think the team may have known what happened right before the Big East Tournament game and I know Balamou is one of Chris's good friends. Probably a huge conspiracy, but they all looked uninterested and pissed off during the Providence game (before being down 17 points).
'

I was thinking EXACTLY this earlier today.  What if Obekpa, Jordan, and Balamou were all out one night and something happened...and Dee punched Balamou, etc.  Jordan was out but no transgressions so he just gets benched.  I havent developed it fully but I could totally see the two being tied together.

It's not even worth it anymore. Time to wipe the slate clean. New coach, new AD, new players. time to rid that culture

Massiello. You don't come late to his practices.
Right on.  Those that say he's crazy should be looking in our coaching mirror. Archie, Danny, Bobby , Mas...it's time

How many times has Lawrence been suspended under Mas?

Why were 2 kids kicked off Archie's team for a dorm room theft incident? Why does Archie's team only have 8 scholarship players and no one over 6'6"?

The same reasons we are killing Lavin are okay for coaches at other schools?

Great points!

Difference is, those guys can coach.

But can they recruit? That is the question. You will not win in the Big East if you don't have talent. The talent disparity is minimal in the MAAC and most one bid leagues. Jump to the big boy conference and if you can't bring in the talent you will be bottom dwellers.

Agree, SJUFan.  Personally, I'm not sure, outside of Miller, the other coaches some of these folks are pining over will be able to recruit blue-chip players outside of NY.  Being that NYC isn't consistently platooning 3 or 4 blue-chip types per year, then it might be a bit risky with the Hurley's or Mas.

If St. John's is gonna move on from Lavin, then they better go after the Shaka Smart's, Greg Marshall's, Archie Miller's, and the likes.

That is fine and I do agree.

Yet, both have their teams in play in games.

Basically my point was that just about every coach can be picked apart if you look at the whole picture. Fans of a team will always be harder on their coach than other coaches that they don't follow that closely.

If you watch Dayton they use a lot of high ball screens and dribble drive. It looked a lot like our offense. The difference with mid majors (IMO) is in the recruiting. Usually a few teams can out recruit the rest of the conference which gives them a great advantage. Once these coaches move up a level and the playing field evens out a bit their great coaching isn't so great.

Not taking anything away from the above mentioned coaches as I do think they are doing a great job currently but it would be a crap shoot if they were to come coach at SJU.

IE, Steve Donahue, Anthony Grant, Brian Gregory, Fran McCaffery (he may have Iowa on the right track now, but he was on the "hot seat" at the beginning of the season).

Is it too much to ask for a coach that can be good and not cause drama? Who has options when a player acts the fool, instead of throwing something on the court and see if it sticks?

Anytime something exciting is supposed to happen to this program, there always dread that Lavin will make announcement that is detrimental to the team. It's tiring and draining at best it has mix results.

Maybe, so.  Maybe, he didn't want any part of UCLA and their wacky fans.  Besides, I wasn't actually speaking of Smart in general.  Just coaches' on or of similar level.

Instead of trying to unrealistically make a play for Shaka Smart why don't we try to find the next Shaka Smart? That guy is probably a head coach at a smaller school or an assistant coach at a larger school right now just waiting for the chance. Who is it remains to be seen, but we can't land that guy if we keep Lavin. It's either accept Lavin's mediocrity or take a risk to find the next big thing. Sure that guy might land on his face but he also might actually run a successful, consistent and drama free program

We will probably always disagree on this topic, which is fine. I would/will root for whom ever is coaching the team. With that said I would much rather keep Lavin than go in the direction you mentioned above.

Baldi do you think the Hurleys or Mass could pull 3 and 4 star kids from outside NY-area (assuming they could land some good local players).

Hassan Martin was a 3 star from Staten Island and he got him to Rhode Island.

Mas got Jermaine Lawrence and I'm pretty sure SJU was recruiting him. Not sure what star he was.

At least a 4, I think, although I believe that the Johnnies backed off because of issues with Lawrence's handler, etc.

But I take your point.

He is talented. But coaches that avoided him won the big east and are a 1 seed
