Zach reports Coach Lavin is going 8 deep.  Who's not playing Felix, Jones, Ali, or Joey?

To be clear, on Francesa coach said he COULD go 8 deep. And besides..the 3 that play will probably get a combined 10 minutes.

Watched some of SDSU-New Mexico, unfortunately got through first half to realize it was last year's film. Film easily available and watchable online is difficult for me to find on this team. Nonetheless, I'm sure the themes of this team are similar. Here are my initial notes:

DEFENSE:
-Full-court pressure, man-to-man, physical in post
-on press, occasionally will double from weakside on PG when ball is being brought up floor
-Halfcourt, will go under screens, will collapse middle to protect paint
-Weakside will help on dribble penetration and picks
-help is strong recovering back to man
-Extremely active with hands, will get lots of deflections and turnovers if not careful with the ball

OFFENSE
vs. Man-to-man
-saw offense run out of:
-3-out - corner L-cuts to ball w/ screen, backside flex cut off pass if there, pass to slot leads to pick and roll
-Horns - entry pass to elbow, corner comes up to top off screen, set ends with high pick and roll
-14 High - corner L-cut for pass, pg comes off flare screen to (short) corner, quickly comes back up off re-screen, attacks basket
-14 Low - dribble handoff at wing, weakside post x-cuts to strong side elbow to get into a horns look, PG runs through and up off screen at weakside elbow, gets ball back, pick and roll
-multiple entries
-corner man L-cuts to slot to receive initial pass
    -dribble hand-off
-high entry pass (most often out of Horns)
-weakside offensive players will exchange between corner and wing
*most sets end up leading to high pick and roll, hard attack to basket with multiple pass options

vs. Zone
-no zone defense seen

Quick Hitters:
-single high pick and roll to attack basket quick
-ball on wing, double screen across for PG to attack hard

Press Break:
-no press seen

Good review.  Thanks.

If they collapse at all against us, it will be silly on their part and will only lead to open looks for Greene and Harrison.  I've noticed that they switch as much as us on screens...could be a great way to get Branch and Jordan iso'd on one of their bigger forwards for early foul trouble.  Our guards have to attack Spencer every single time they get lucky enough to draw him on the perimeter...Dom too.  Let's even the odds in the paint early.

I want to see us go to Amar in the paint.  The kid is a sleeping giant with his skill and passing ability.  Even if he just passes out to Greene and Harrison it could generate a few open looks in a game that might be a race to 65 points.

We can't be pressed, so bring it on.  All it will do is give us more looks before the defense is set and lead to fouls on their part.

Hoping for the press. Get Dom in open court. Get down open 3's

Why can't we be pressed?

I think you just want me to praise our boy, PGIV :)
Greene can break the press himself and doesn't turn it over.  We've also got Jordan and Harrison with good handles and  PF/C that can bring it up on any PF/C in the country.  And Branch.

Minnesota tried to press us.  Didn't work.  Can you remember a game we've been be beaten by a press?

Pressing a team with 4-5 guards on the floor would be foolish.  I'd welcome that all day long.  I'm not bothered by their "length."  We simply do not even attempt skip passes and probably have the shortest average distance per pass of any team in the country.  I'd be concerned if they had a 230 pound guard to beatup D'lo or a 260 pound big man to carve out space down low.

D'lo has struggled at times against long defenders. Effects his mid range game. Should be a fun game!!!

Seems to me that D'lo struggles most against guards that can match his strength and either stay with him or overwhelm him with athleticism--see Gtown, the kid from San Francisco last year, and Roosevelt Jones of Butler.

SDSU only has one player over 220 pounds on the roster (less than us) and only one guard that could physically pose a problem to D'lo--Trey Kell a 6'4 215 pound freshman who has played a combined 22 minutes the last two games.  But he's not any more athletic than Harrison.  Playing a freshman on such a savvy senior might not be a wise move and could result in Harrison living at the line.

Alas, you have seen right through my clever ruse.

You must be mistaken about this press breaking aptitude, good handle and lack of turnovers - for he is a one trick pony and not very good at that trick.

What does scare me about SDSU is their trap at half court.  They'll get us at least once with that early.  That is where the length and athleticism will be most troubling.  Hopefully try it on Harrison, who is smart/strong enough to step through the trap and savvy enough to pick up a foul.  Dom is probably most likely to fall for it...Jordan next.

They probably heard Lavin's comments that were not very good when the game speeds up, and that we prefer to run our sets in the half court.

That's why they'll press us.

At gtown, they came out in the 3/4 court press and we had no answer early

Georgetown tried to press our small lineup at the garden, broke it easy. They also had smith in which was kind of stupid. Still I think the faster they speed the game up the better for us.

We press everybody.  The entire game.  Fisher usually goes 9 deep, but sometimes we go 11.  The 9th and 10th guys don't bring much offensively, and that's on this team.  But both are elite defenders.

Occasionally we trap.  But, the press we use is generally a way to wear the other team down as they turn the ball over more late and lose their legs.  SDSU has had terrible first halves this year only to take over the game in the second due to other teams getting tired.  That's when they go 10 minutes without a bucket and we go on a whopping 6-0 run.  lol   It's part of the reason why it takes teams the most time in the nation to get a shot off of us.

If I as a pot smoking fan know you guys play better in transition due to your athletes, then I'm thinking Fisher may be clued in on it too.

They press teams but they play weaker teams with weaker athletes. For once I think we have a good matchup. If we had Obekpa I would be very confident.

We pressed Arizona, BYU, Pitt, and Utah as well.
