He and Ellison are ready to compete at a high level right now.  He might even give Brunsn a run for his money for R.O.Y.  Please basketball Gods give us one break! Recruits will be lining up to play with him  when they see what he can do.

Staff feels good about this I hear.

Zags note, at least the first part, could have been written a month ago.

What is exciting about this article are the comments about our two guards from their team mates.

1.  We dont know that yet.

2.  Mullin had a month or so to put 9 guys together to try to field a competitive team.  Why WOULDNT he take a chance on Lovett, the most talented of all of them, if he thought there was at least a 50% chance he might be eligible.

If Lavin was still coach, I'd agree with you, but Mullin had no other choice.

I completely agree that Mullin had very little time to field a team, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth to go through this every season, regardless of who is the coach. At some point, it becomes less about the coach, and more about the University, who clearly, has dropped the ball countless times over the last 5 years.

It's Lavin's or Mullin's job to check report cards. But it's someone's job, and it's about damn time they did it.

This will not change anytime soon, so just get use to it. Unless you are a top team you will need to take some chances on talented players. Even Kansas and Kentucky signed kids that were/are question marks academically.

I think Lovett was and is a well calculated risk regardless.  Kid is talented and if staff feels confident about it, I think it's a win.  One can't always figure out what curveballs the NCAA throws at them either.  This staff is different than the last staff.  I think the guys we grabbed are worth the risk, as we had to build an entire team fast with few left on the table.

I think it was worth the risk. Mullin, unlike Lavin has a lot of other pieces. Which is amazing considering the short time recruiting. Although it will be a bummer if he doesn't qualify, We still have Mussini and Ponds next year. He hasn't lost anything, we had plenty of scholis. .This year is a rebuilding year. The question I ask, is if he doesn't qualify can he red shirt this year or do we have to re recruit him, or is he lost to us.

The reason this kid was available to us was because he bounced around high schools and was an eligibility risk.  Kansas wanted him to prep and join the '16 class.

Recruiting high character and high upside kids with questionable academic records is a perfectly sensible talent acquisition strategy if it is used sparingly and depth is sufficient.  Lavin recruited kids with questionable character and rolled the dice too frequently.  This is different (hopefully).

Mullin should make sure to run transcripts by Poison from now on to make sure they are acceptable.

The Ncaa should lift the entire student/academic facade entirely.

Let the teams operate as the quasi professional teams they really are.

Why have college basketball--go the baseball route.  Have a true minor league and allow kids to be drafted out of high school as opposed to restricting them to go to college for one year which means they only have to pass 3-4 courses in the first semester as the second doesn't matter as they are going pro after the college season is over.

I am fine with the risk. It would be nice to win one of these though.

Most are ok with reasonable risks for exceptional talent. The dam problem is why does it take the NCAA so freaking long to come to a decision. They should have all this wrapped up by Oct 15.

Don't you think bouncing around high schools and being an academic risk are two immediate red flags..?

Duke is the only elite program in the country that doesn't take chances on academically risky kids.  There are a few other less successful programs also.  Otherwise, it is part of the game.

Bouncing around HS is the cause of the academic risk in this case, from what I understand. So that's a singular red flag to me.  Nick Irvin could be another red flag, but I'll give the new staff the benefit of the doubt.

If the kid is a good teammate, is a cultural fit, and has a high ceiling, he's worth the risk. I wouldn't make multiple big dice rolls at a time  (i.e. Keith Thomas and Adonis to fill the one position of need) to ensure sufficient depth. But again, that isn't the case here.

Its amazing, the NCAA can't give schools an answer on Lovett and a kid like Diallo but the kid with a fake transcript last season got through the NCAA Clearinghouse and only got looked at again because of an issue with a teammate.
