My understanding is that the complications arrive when students change schools, as different schools have differing curriculum and what one school may call Algebra I, another school calls Basics of Math (or something).  The NCAA then has to contact each school and find out exactly what the curriculum for each class was to ensure they were legitimate classes and that they were not duplicated.  They then have to do this for every student who has changed schools.  Not trying to excuse the lack of urgency the NCAA seems to exude, but I don't think it's as simple as "This student had a 2.6 gpa and got a 1100 on their SATs, they're in."

I'm curious to know how many fulltime staff they have in their NCAA Initial Eligibility center. That "organization" makes enough money that there is no excuse for such a time lag.  Hire more staff.

It's about 6 people who cover all sports for all levels across the country. This is where the problem is.

And for the billions of dollars they reap from Football Playoff deals and CBS March Madness they cant find $1M to pay the salaries of say 24 people to add to their group.

That's disgusting.  There's no way 6 people can reasonably conduct thorough and timely investigations of all of these situations, and it's the students who suffer most (despite what some of us may think :P).

The NCAA is getting out of hand.  Between LoVett, Diallo, and now TACKO who is an engineering student and seems to be no academic question mark at all - quite the opposite - what are they trying to prove?

That Roy Williams is a class act.

Good point.  No wonder they dont have time to do anything else.  Writing a fiction is always more difficult than dealing with facts and evidence.

The NCAA and FIFA are the two most corrupt sports governing bodies on the planet. I'm waiting to see which lawfirm will get retained to review the NCAA's process for determining eligibility. It's only a matter of time before an independent governing body is formed for college athletes.

I agree Dave we shouldnt call, but you have to wonder why the big football schools are talking about breaking away from the NCAA. Once this happens and the loss of revenue I can see a chain reaction of a secondary governing body formed by the member schools happening. This is getting insane , year after year.

I don't think the NCAA sees any of the bowl money.  That's strictly BCS money, or other independent organizations, like the Yankees Pinstripe Bowl. They do, however, get a whopping sum from the NCAA tourney. Enough to hire more then six people.

But this is gross exaggeration.  It must be hundreds of employees, because there must be tens of thousands of athletes that need initial clearance every year.  Maybe they need more employees, I don't know.  But what it sounds like is they want to delve into the actual course work, including homework.  Now if they have it in writing that their policy is to check homework, then this is legit.  But otherwise, it is stupid and very unfair, and he needs a lawyer.   I had a Professor that did this in college before the first exam.  Must have been about nine homeworks.  Many people threw some of them away or lost them because she did not say she was collecting them.  A nice person with a PhD.  The Dept. Chair said she could not do this.  But in the NCAA's case, who saves their homework from high school after they have started college.  I think he needs a good lawyer, unless their is some stated policy that athletes should save their homework.

The NCAA delay regarding Marcus is due to there around the clock; 24/7 investigation of major academic fraud at North Carolina--when they finish in 4 years they will consider Marcus' eligibility.  They strive for fairness and wish to get it right.    ::)

Are we more upset about the delay or more upset he hasn't been cleared?  In other words would we feel better if the NCAA a month ago declared Marcus a "non-qualifier" as opposed to being in limbo now?

The NCAA has been burned before.  What do I mean?  Derrick Rose was cleared and nearly won a NC then the NCAA took another look at his college boards and realized there was evidence to suggest he did not actually take the test.  I think the NCAA would love to have delayed that decision back in 2007.

People are upset that we get housed by programs like Syracuse and Uconn, and they get away with murder. We make one harmless mistake, and we know we'd end up on probation. Basketball programs that don't win, and don't bring in significant money for the NCAA are probably not their concern.

No one likes the way the NCAA has handled the Marcus LoVett situation, but frankly, I'm not happy with the way we've handled it either. If our head coach is so certain that Marcus LoVett has been wronged by the NCAA that he'd "get on a plane to Indianapolis" and also state that he "knows people on the Pacers", then why doesn't he actually do something about it? These are empty threats, and they are threats. It's not the first time we've had a coach threaten the NCAA. Deserved or not, we're not going to get them to tow the line by threatening them. I was surprised that Mullin reacted the way he did. Instead of making threats, he should have just done it. Show up in Indianapolis and resolve this.

Now, we may threaten to sue the NCAA? Just f'n do it. They'll find out when they get served.

I have no idea what that means.

I stand by what I said people are less interested in the amount of time then they are he hasn't been given clearance.

I never said anything about bowls. I was referring to the billion dollar tv deals.

If NCAA has 6 investigators I simply picked a round number and divided by a salary of 45k not really knowing what typical salaries are in Indianapolis. Going from 6 to 30 is more than enough of an increase.

Last weekend Zach tweeted that he expects resolution by early this week. It's now Wednesday at noon and I'm wondering how the team is preparing for Wagner. Hope the insiders can add some insight, I'm over reading long winded complaints in this thread, opening night is two days away.

The St.John's athletic department has a lot of experience delivering disappointing news to fans. From the injury plagued Jarvis and Roberts squads to the ineligible Lavin-recruited players. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they have an answer regarding LoVett, that it's an unfavorable answer, and they are deciding how to deal with it as we speak. If you announce this negative news on Monday, the fans have all week to complain about it. Announce it on Friday morning, and the story of opening night highlighted by the prodigal son returning home will trump one ineligible kid from Chicago.

What does the board think? Does that sound like St.John's to you?

It does sound like St. John's, but I don't think that's what is going on here.  Or if it is, they literally found out about it today or yesterday and are figuring out how to challenge the ruling before announcing it (which wouldnt be that unreasonable).
