UMBC Game Thread

I don't get what some are seeing calling Mussini slow. He is anything but. Was most impressed with him tonight, especially his hesitation moves and his finishing ability. He made some great passes but also missed some guys who were wide open a few too often, he'll learn.  My favorite play was late in the second half when he had a semi fast-break opportunity, looked as though he was gonna pull up for a three right in front of Mullin, but instead shot faked and made a great pass to Mvouika who drilled a dagger 3.  A perfect example of giving up a good shot for a great shot.

I'm with you.  I don't know what everyone is looking at to label him slow.  The kid pushes the pace like we haven't seen here in years.  Basketball isn't just a sprint...you're only as fast with the ball as your handle allows and the kid can move effortlessly with the ball and he's always looking to push.  It's refreshing after four years of guys running 90 mph with ball and having no plan or ability to do something with it.  He never looks out of control and is always read to pass.

He's not going to shut anyone down on d, but he knows where to be on help and how to get some easy turnovers.  Hopefully Sima can cleanup for him down low with some blocks and good help D to minimize the damage is on-ball d will do.

Just got back from Queens, this team has vastly improved over the past two weeks. In particular, Ron, CJ, and Durand are displaying true leadership as the elder statesmen, while promise is coming in every direction from the likes of Moose, Sima, and Darien.

The defensive intensity is there, hustle points were abound. However, the turnovers have to be cut down. Defensive lapses occurred naturally through attrition, but you can tell that this team has true fight, and is only going to get in better shape. I'm going to enjoy watching the gelling throughout the Winter, it felt good walking out of Carnesecca tn. Bring on Rutgers!

Btw, Darien has loads of potential. I feel that he's been under sung and overlooked to this point , but he's going to shine in due time.

What has Darien done to deserve more attention? He's hit a three or two. Before he gets attention, he needs to play much better. Then he'll get attention.

Some are seeing that he is not a fast runner.

disclaimer: I don't think I've called him slow, but I did notice he appeared a bit "speed challenged" when I was at the Wagner game.

Really happy with the game yesterday. That's two games in a row that I found myself excited because of two simple things we did, far more consistently than in years past: free throws and three point shooting.

Mussini with another strong effort. He might not be a true PG like some say but he's excellent. 18 points, just a strong, fun game to watch out of him.

Sima is going to be a fan favorite. There's no hesitation in his post game, no silly head fakes or putting the ball on the floor to cause turnovers. 8 pts, 8 boards and 6 blocks, damn fine.

Mvouika was ultra impressive, he stood out so much in my eyes, really liked his overall game, and Johnson added a nice 15 pts. I hope this continues because if that's the case and we get this type of TEAM BASKETBALL - we're not going to have to need a 1 man super star for times of need.

Just an impressive game to see from these young kids. Well done.

sima's definitely the most exciting player out there.  he's so impressive for a freshman and has nba upside.  really looking forward to seeing him develop.  mussini is being asked to do a lot, he is doing his best out there with his physical skills, and the team will probably rise and fall with him, unfortunately.  ellison has shown some flashes, and he looks like a potentially great college guard as a senior.  durand and mvouika are good for seniors, and it's great to have them around.  williams has a really flat shot that he takes a lot of and doesn't offer much more, but hopefully he can shake the rust off.

It was disappointing that there were not more fans there...Hopefully that changes., especially with the games we should win.

Dave,  I enjoyed your post game notes and all the other fine reporting you've done this season as well.  I think the Phil Greene piece was my favorite.

I'm guessing it's stereotyping because he is white and us honkeys get an unfair rap sometimes
