And on top of everything. If we can compare the 2 after only a few games for Sima compared to 3 years for CO , that says a lot about Sima relative to CO.

I'm not sure how people are trying to pretend Obekpa didn't affect opposing teams' games.  Yes, he was horrible offensively.  Yes, he should have been a better rebounder.  Yes, he was a schmuck.  But on the defensive side, few players have had more of an impact on the college game in recent years.  A few times every game players would miss layups because they THOUGHT he was going to be there.  I think when all is said and done, Sima will be the better player (let's hope, anyway), but as a pure shot blocker, few have been as dominant as Obekpa, and few have had as much of an impact defensively.

Nobody is pretending. He was a very good shot blocker...maybe the best we've ever had...but he was always out of position his first two years.  He did a much better job his last year.  There is a reason why his blocked shots went down as he career progressed.  He went for the blocked shot at all costs in the beginning and it left us vulnerable both defensively and for rebounding.  He never had the "Ken Johnson" effect.  Teams knew to keep taking it at him and they would win the game even if he had ten blocks. We were 3-9 against Big East teams his freshman season when he blocked three or more shots and lost both games he blocked six or more.

The perfect example of this is the Nova game where Obekpa had his highest block total (7) of his Big East freshman season.  Nova outscored SJU 41-16 in the paint.

I think Obekpa was a more emphatic shot blocker. I feel like Sima is just already in the right place to block shots where as Obekpa would fly from no where to block it.

It could also be said his blocks went down because teams learned not to drive when he was waiting under the basket.

Really Poison? In your last post in the fordham thread you admitted to making knee jerk reactions on two players and being wrong. In his first collegiate road game, playing against a senior who is playing the best of his life, Sima got dominated. If that changes your opinion on him fine. All that means is you'll have 24 for opinions about him by the time the season is done.

I think he has potential, but I take issue with people who are quick to cast Obekpa aside saying we're better off without him because Sima is a more well rounded player. He played like a woman tonight. My opinion is that I would like him to still be on my team. I could give a shit what he does on his own time. This game was a disgrace. I'm glad that it wasn't televised.

Some folks of the team like to devour their own.  Some folks also like to jump the gun, as well.  I like Sima, and believe he's gonna be more than a solid player when it's said and done.  But, I'd also like to have Obekpa on this team, as well.  The same Obekpa who people felt could've or would've been the missing piece to beating San Diego State in the last season's NCAA Tournament.  Some people also piss on Obekpa because he's affiliated with Lavin.  Silly.

Maybe, Obekpa eventually grows up in time.  Unfortunately, some people probably see him as a pawn for their entertainment.  GTFOH!  I wanna win, as much as anyone on here, but keep things in perspective.  No need to crap on him.  Wish the guy luck, and hope he gets it right shortly.

I think Poison has a point. We were a little quick to declare a freshman Sima a better player than Obekpa, who was a defensive force the day he took the floor for SJU. I like Sima and think he has potential, but I'd take a freshman Obekpa on this team over him for one game right now.

Sima had a bad game against a 23 year old senior.  Man v. Boy.  It won't be his last bad game.  Obekpa had plenty of bad games all three years...worse than this.

This was not a point I've ever made.  You take a senior Obekpa all day.  However, you take a freshman Sima over the freshman or sophomore Obekpa without hesitation.  240 lb 23 year old senior v. a 205 freshman six games in.  If you guy are expecting Sima and Mussini to be stellar every week you are being very unfair.    It's a process. Get knocked down, build yourself back up. Rinse and repeat.

Not sure I agree. From day one of Obekpa I felt a sense of confidence whenever an opposing guard drove to the hoop, that the shot would either be altered or rejected. Even through Obekpa's bad games that sense of confidence never changed. I don't get that same sense of security yet with Sima. Probably never will, but I think he has potential to excel in other areas that Obekpa did not.

I quite honestly don't think Obekpa developed a ton here. To me, freshman Obekpa and junior Obekpa were not a whole lot different. His offense was a tad better I suppose, but he actually blocked 30+ more shots his freshman year.

All you see are his blocks.  Look at the points in the paint we allowed his first two seasons.  There is no question he was a terrific shot blocker, but as the year wore on the majority of posters saw the emperor had no clothes...that is Obekpa's love of blocked shots put him in poor defensive position and even worse rebounding position. it's like a CB that gambles on INTs and gets burned.  Regardless, Rhoomes last night was the kind of player that always gave Obekpa problems by taking it right at him.  Obekpa was almost exclusively and off-ball help blocker.

We lost by double-digits with either guy against Fordham.

Didn't a beloved 3 year Obekpa get tossed from a game against lowly Fordham last year

Only comparison should be their first year. Unless I'm missing something, the year is not over.

The funny thing is the majority of the posters think you are serious.
