WillieG is right in that we match up better with teams that have more traditional 4's and 5's.  And of course anyone who zones us.  The kid drilling all those 3's on pick and pops had Sima guarding him for a while.  Hard to take Sima off the floor because a big part of our defense is funneling drivers to the lane for him to block shots and of course he is our best post player most nights (and was the only one scoring in the first half).  But that strategy effectively negated him.  We are much better off playing teams who have 4's and 5's who aren't great 3 point shooters, because Yawke and Sima, etc, can defend them rather than us getting creamed on pick and rolls.  Very much the opposite of last year when any post presence gave us all kinds of trouble.

Good assessment, but in this case you have to go small.. They were killing us with a smaller lineup..having Sima, Yakwe, and Alibaba I the game together played right into their hands..

We never made an adjustment.. I was really disappointed in the coaching staff tonight.. more so than the players... They are freshman and there will be ups and downs, but the brain trust on the sidelines , all 8 of them  and their massive salaries, need to be smarter and more proactive..

The players will improve, this much I know....as for the rest of the team, I really hope they do.

Confusing part is I thought the staff did a great job against Cuse and attacking their zone.. It's like no one prepared for this game and that is bad.

Actually I thought they should have taken sima off green and put yakwe on him with his athleticism .  He wouldn't get stuck 1/2 way like sima did .

Yakwe is certainly athletic enough, put I don't think he's a great perimeter defender at this stage..

I mean, there is the argument that we just don't have the roster to go small like that, but there should have been a change in philosophy before it got out of hand..

Complacent performance against a team we did not match up well with.  One true guard who is not a PG will be a continual problem.  Need Lovett but still a problem, no guard depth, next year will be the opposite. PATIENCE!  We are already outperforming expectations.  More good wins and strange losses will happen.  5 to 7 league wins....

I didn't go to the game. It looked like there were about 4,000 people there.  Sometimes you can't tell on TV, but it seemed like they were pretty dead.  They seemed more like observers then fans.  Tough to put pressure on the other team when there is no crowd noise.  I guess the students not being there had a lot to do with it.  If anyone here was at the game, maybe they could give a description of the fan involvement.

Also, Carnesecca arena is the only sports or entertainment venue that I have ever been to, that turns the house lights on . . . . .  AFTER the event starts. It effects the blue level seats the most, and it's not just that the lights get in the fans eyes, but they are shining right into the TV cameras too.  The Alumni Hall house lights could be turned off when the event started and the court lit up in a sharp, bright yellow, that looked brilliant both in house and on TV.  It makes a huge difference.  It really does.  Ever since they renovated the gym, the court has looked very dull on camera.  It no longer plays well on TV, where as Alumni Hall played extremely well on TV.  Don't say it's not important, it is.  And it's just a simple thing that was an oversight when they renovated the gym.  Someone didn't know what the heck they were doing.  We would get more fans and recruits interested via television if this was not the case. And Fox, for example, would like it better also. I spoke to Monasch about it once and he denied it was even true.  He wasn't a very good caretaker for the program.  Spend $20,000 and remedy the situation, if it would even cost that much.

How the hell do we beat Syracuse then get housed by Incarnate Word in the same week? I'm at a loss.
We are St. John's.

As great as the game plan was against Cuse it was just as poor against Incarnate Word. I think they thought they were gonna roll them.

I was there. I don't understand how you schedule an on campus game on the Friday night of finals week. Psychologically no one was engaged, the body language outside of Johnson was lethargic and timid. Word on the other hand played inspired ball and looked hungry for a win fresh off a 2,000 mile plane ride.

Listening to Mink and BT's interview w Slice on the ride back, he mentioned most of the above. Notably, he honed in the lack of preparation from the coaches to the players, said 'it's a privilege to put on that uniform', and how you should be ready no matter the setting.

This is year 1, there are plenty more lessons to be learned, but this was very disappointing. Everyone outside of Durand should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

Bash was sitting behind the bench with his friends and family, what an awful impression. Felix and Marcus really would've come in handy. Prayers are up for NJIT.

Players have to defend. They didn't bother.
Hard to single anyone out on a night that the entire team lacked intensity or hustle but I did notice one time in particular while the game was still winnable where DJ just jogged after his man who went around a pick. Props to Poison who has been on DJ for lack of hustle I hadn't noticed how pronounced it is until tonight. It appears all he is interested in is getting his shots. Should be benched until he shows some hustle as it is a poor example for a 5th year senior and one of the supposed team leaders to lack hustle.

We always seem to schedule somebody on the Friday before Christmas. The UNC Asheville loss at CA in Branch's first game was also the Friday before Christmas

Let's be honest...the staff got completely outcoached in this game. IW's coach has been around a long time and he completely threw the Johnnies out of whack. The key against this team was to pound down low with Christian Jones and Sima. If you watched a few plays, noone on their team could physically match up with Jones. Yet we continued to play right into their gameplan and keep the ball on the perimeter and slow, methodical offensive sets. I'd like to see the offense be much crisper in getting rid of the ball quicker and moving without the ball. We gave that team way too much time to setup defensively and controlled the game. The staff and majority of the team didn't show up last night.

Jones was unable to finish anything. Sima for all that he does well, needs to get stronger. He should have scored 30 points last night with ease.

Jones barely touched the ball. Him and Sima should each take 10 shots against a smaller team like that. They never established an inside game. They were hoisting outside shots up all game and no ball movement when they should've been feeding the low post with Sima and CJ all night. Fed right into IW's style. The staff will take their lumps too and last night was a great example of this.

I don't think we were flat . We are just really slow and not athletic If a team waits for us to dribble up the court allows us to pass the ball with out any pressure we have a chance .  Our guys are good shooters when they get their feet set. Only a fool ( Hopkins) will play like that. This was not a bad game in my opinion I think this team beats us in a 7 game series 4-1.
ecery team is more agreessive both offensively and defensively . As prepared as we were against Syracuse we were just as unprepared against this shitty team. The team should have found out Tuesday that their power foward was a shooter not after he hit 5 3 pointers.
Just as important as player development this year should be the intent of wining. Wining at all costs. Rotations, defenses, game plans have to change or we are going to Keep getting killed. How many open 3's did we give up? They played with 4 guards for much of the night, we played with 1 . When u are getting ur assed kicked something should change .
No pressure, no fight, no urgency will get 0 wins going foward.
