Amar Returns

Amar is far from the worst player we have had. He seems like a nice kid and certainly someone you want to root for. I am sure he will work hard this summer and get better. However, we need a PF who wants and will defend and rebound. Amar thinks he is a shooter and playmaker. Amar >>> the player Joey Delerosa is. Joey Delerosa knows and understands his role, doesn't shoot or touch the ball, and tries to defend. Amar comes into a game like he is instant offense. If Amar plays 5 minutes, he certainly will get called for a moving screen and miss at-least 2 3's.  I would much rather have Joey Delerosa. I know how much he stinks, and it's not close. This scholarship should have been given or split among the walk-ons. Or giving another 2/3 star player a shot. We know what Amar is. And what he is wont help us. 

If the coaching staff want him to be an inside player he will become an inside player or ride the bench. If they want him to be a shooter they won't mind him hanging out on the outside taking 3s.

Agree. Letting him shoot is stupid. Because he can't shoot. So this is on the staff!

That we are debating the merits of bringing back a high character 6'9 Junior with 3p range who will compete for time as our 10th man says a lot about how far the roster has come in 13 months.

Owens is better than them. Much better.

We have two high level transfers coming on for 2017 who are equivalent to nabbing top 30 players from the 2017 HS class.  Staff is on Tucker and a few others.  I'm not concerned about 2017.

That may be true but is that a sustainable model? You gotta be able to land top talent out of the high school classes. How is 2018 looking?

Welcome back to Amar.  Everything we hear about him in practice is very positive and he has always displayed great enthusiasm during games while on the bench or on the floor.  I also have seen a certain toughness about him on the court that leads me to believe he will not take crap from opponents.  He is also considered a great teammate.  Maybe Chris sees something like his teammate, Ronnie Stewart, in Amar.  Not everyone is a star/starter.  We need role players.  Keep hitting the gym this summer and good things can happen.

Chris doesn't look like he planned this out very well. A month ago, it was good riddance. Now, he's got heart. He has practically no understanding of the game. He'll be a junior, and it's time he played the game from the neck up. Mullin should find a way to get through to him. That's what a good coach does.

Clearly Livingston was the staff preference, especially Matt A's. He was on this kid for a fair amount of time & expected to get him. When it did not work out, they chose to ask Amar to stay.

I think his 3 point shooting is one area where he can contribute. He shot 30% with no point guard. That was his best skill, if you can call it that. He can't play defense against D1 players without fouling. That's where he needs to improve. How can be a leader on the court of you don't understand the game?

I get that he probably works hard in practice, but the staff needs to find another way to get through to him if they want him to stay. Your only returning upperclassman can't be the guy making foolish passes, committing silly fouls 40 feet from the basket, and falling for every ball fake.

Amar is strange because there is times on the offensive end where he gets a put back slam, makes a euro step drive and then nails a 3 and you are like wow that was impressive but those games are few and far between. He is lost on defense and in most games not a good shooter. I am not sure if it is a focus thing or if he is just that hot and cold. Usually lesser players tend to go off against lowly competition but Amar had his best games against two final four teams. It seems like there is something in terms of talent which is why if he went somewhere else and played 25 minutes a game maybe he could have had an impact. I am good with having him back because he is a good team guy and can play a few minutes off the bench but I think it might not be a good move for him.Clearly he just loves the team and doesn't really mind that he might not play a ton of minutes.

The staff owes him answers for his development. They tried to push him out the door, and then they changed their minds. It will be telling if he comes back in November an improved and smarter player, or if he's the same as he was last season.

Why does everyone take it as gospel that Amar was forced out? Mullin, Slice and St. Jean would never say that directly to an insider, someone around the university, or a reporter. I think it was more about Amar's desire to play than the info being passed around suggests.

Amar probably saw the writing on the wall with Owens finishing his redshirt and the staff recruiting Clark and Livingston. With Livingston out of the picture, there was a need for his services and minutes available.
