I’m on board with calling them the best returning duo, but elite scorers seems a bit much. Shamorie, Powell, and Howard are elite scorers.

I just don’t see Heron ever being that guy on a good team. Far more likely that LJ can be that guy, but both would be better suited for 15-17 ppg with a third scorer to chip in 12-14. Hopefully that is Wright.
Marillac back on his meds.  ;) :)

Most quality coaches we could've hired would have turned the program around in much quicker fashion

I doubt it. Though let's say for argument sake you're right for once. How much quicker? Ncaa tournament bid third season?

As Bill Parcells said, you are what your record says you are.
He came into a complete rebuild. Not the kind that some of the Mullin haters have falsely claimed this season is.  But a real one. No coach could have done anything positive record wise in season 1 and 2. Season 3 was disappointing in large part to the Lovett defection and season 4 was terrific. The mess is in your pants.

Now look at Anderson's record.
Why? Only an idiot would attempt to compare Mullin's coaching tenure at St. John's to Anderson's coaching tenure at St. John's before game 1.  That's the relevant topic at hand, no?

You need to deal with the fact that your man crush Mullin is gone.
I know he's gone. I can read.

He did not succeed here as HC.
He had a season as successful as any coach has had here in a year starting this millennium.
He inherited the worst St. John's team ever in the history of the program and built it to that then the trigger was pulled too early. Same as it ever was. I would call it a success!

Let it go man. You gotta stop living in the past. It's a new era in SJU hoops. Embrace it and you'll be much happier.
When you write truth about our hero I keep quiet. When lies and untruths are spread - I call them out. I welcome the Razorback with open arms and wish him a long and fruitful stay in Queens. I'll be there with bells and whistles supporting the team full out as I always do. I'm looking forward to the anticipated drop in ticket prices.

The king is dead, long live Nolan Richardson disciples!

That's as good as it gets around here. Next season you'll be wishing it was last season.

Do you think that there are coaches we could have hired that would have turned the program around quicker than Mullin did considering the roster he fielded in his first season?

Turned the program around? Mullin inherited a program that went to 3 consecutive post season tournaments and 2 consecutive 20 win seasons and 2 consecutive 10-8 conference record.

He inherited a program that went 92-72 (46-44) with 4 post season tournaments the previous 5 years (2 NCAA and 2 NIT). Mullin never had a winning conference record. His highest finish was 7th place. He went 59-73 (20-52) with 1 post season appearance. In what universe is that considered “turning the program around”?

You just stated the very definition of turning a program around.  :D

Bravo. There is actually an argument to be made that Mullin set the program back 3 years, the complete opposite of "bringing it back". One of the few positives I only see from the Mullin years as far as a program standpoint was the money and sellouts that is all.

Mullin built the program for one season  of success with a few high level kids all pulled in by Matt alone, but didn’t do anything to create any sustained success.  He didn’t do any hiring of new coaches to recruit.  Didn’t recruit himself and had no pipeline of high school kids coming in.  It would have been just he and GSJ on the sidelines this year with zero recruiters because he had no plan at all past this post-season.

I wanted Mullin to succeed here.  Fans love him etc.  He just wasn’t committed to doing the proper thing in having a stable full of assistants who could help him succeed.  He wasn’t committed to the 365 day coaching and recruiting grind.

I had no problem with him delegating to his assistants yet he refused to hire ones that could help the program in all facets.

I have zero problem with Mullin giving this a shot and had a bit of fun watching the team this season.  We were just really flawed from a coaching standpoint down to a roster standpoint and were only built for the run we had this season and nothing moving forward.  Even this season’s run fizzled down the stretch.

Mullin got out at a good time.  I don’t know what Anderson will bring us but consistency is a strong suit for him.  Even consistently mediocre to good is a start at SJU.

A great job? This is the worst class in SJU history. This is the hyperbole that makes no sense to me. Have you seen these guys play? They leave alot to be desired. I understand a roster needs to be filled, but all these guys need to be recruited over if not we are in for mediocrity for years.
I would step off that high horse for a little while Sonny, when’s the last time St. John’s has won more than one game in the tourney?? Pretty sure Anderson has won 9-10 tourney games since that time.

That’s the nicest way possible to say what was obvious. He sucked! He was lazy! He was arrogant!
Year 1 and 2 never had to happen. We had a coach. Mullin should have kept his big mouth shut. Firing lavin when we did was just stupid. He should have coached the next season. And if they wanted to get rid of him after that their should have been a plan.
Allowing this lazy man to do whatever he wanted, while he was stealing 2 million set us back probably 7 years. The only curse we have around here is the curse of Chris mullin.
MA will be fine here. Not because he is any genius. He is competent and he will try. Curse is over.

How would you characterize the talent left to Mullin following Hollywood's (fired too early also) final season?

Do you think the teams Chris fielded his first or second seasons were anywhere near tournament caliber?

Turned the program around?
Yes, took over the worst team in the history of St. John's sports and brought it to the promise land in year four.  That's turning a program around. We never got the chance to see if he could have enjoyed sustained success as he was promptly fired/released/forced out/quit too soon in our never ending rinse - lather - repeat customary style.

23 year old Greg St.  Jean coached the least talented team in big east history. Why are you proud of that?

When you say talent left to Mullin by Lavin are you refering to Samir Doughty, Brandon Sampson, Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa or just the slop that ultimately took the court for Mullin after all those guys left?

That slop still never should have gotten killed by St. Thomas, incarnate word, and a few other cupcakes.
What kind of man isn’t prepared for his first game against a division 2 school?

A man who didn't know the first thing about how to coach the game of basketball.  Not his fault Dr. Gempeshaw thought it was a good idea to pay 2+ million a year to a guy who had never coached a second in his life.

There will always be roster turnover during a coaching change. It’s up to the staff to build their team. If Lavin was retained the roster would have looked much different.

Look at the team’s performance the 3rd season. Very talented team even w/o LoVett. We didn’t even make the NIT. 4-14 conference record was worse than the previous season. Do you think the team they fielded warranted that outcome? That’s when I knew it wasn’t going to work.

Mullin took over a program that just went to the “promise land”. He didn’t take over “ the worst team in SJU history”, he and his staff built it.

Got a chance for sustained success? He went 8-10 in a down BE year, lost his best player along with the BE defensive player of the year and his starting center. He lost his only recruiter and only had the sit out transfers signed for 2019. Making a coaching change was the only shot we had at having a successful season.
