So mutombo played as a soph. Big deal. His 3 points and 3 rebounds would translate to 20 and 20 in today's college game.

I'm not sure how you can say his 3 and 3 turn into 20 and 20 even though I know you are exaggerating but he was raw and he turned into a good a player.

Not to put Dele along the career path of Mutombo but he can still improve with more experience.

Also I think you can learn a lot more from watching and paying attention to numbers because numbers don't lie.

Well, you said he was damned good as freshman, whereas he didn't play, so I got confused. And he didn't contribute as a sophomore, so I got even more confused. Then I finally figured out that what you meant was that he was damned good as a 23 year old junior - which kind of illustrates the point that I was making, which was that big men take time to develop, especially those who haven't been "hooping" (that's what the kids call it) for very long, and that it was premature to pronounce judgment on Coker.

Presumably the 13 and 7 Alonzo Mourning averaged that year would translate into 91 and 49. Good thing Nate Thurmond isn't playing nowadays, his 18 and 18 would be 126 and 126, which is impressive, even with inflation.

Are you the same Poison who thought Phil Waite was capable good for 10 and 10 in BE play last year? If so I'm certainly looking forward to studying at the feet of someone so learned.

Coker has been awful and sadly i don't expect him to get better. I don't care how great he looks phyiscally he is not a Big East basketball player. If he only just started playing basketball he should never been recuited to play basketball here. Comparing him to Mutumbo is silly, they are both African. It like assuming any white player will be a great 3 point shooter and nothing else. The coaching staff brought him in but seems to have no plan for him.

Coker was top 100 on at least one recruiting site that I saw, so something is flawed -- the rankings, the coaching staff, or his BB IQ and desire to improve.

If he's more ripped than last season, the desire seems like it would be there--at least from the weight room perspective. The other three are up in the air.

I like Dele...got the size and feet to be a good player.  He does have some touch but you can tell he hasn't been playing for long.  He's got to learn to play defense with his feet and learn that he can change shots...he doesn't have to block them or foul someone to be effective.

Had anyone compared his skills to Mutombo's you might have a point, but since no one did, you don't.

PS Don't mention the race thing next time, bit of a giveaway.

Comparing Coker to Mutumbo in any manor,

I don't live in a manor, squire. Just a modest split level.

So if I said that they were both tall Africans centers, that would be nice personic. Whereas if I said that DK had a great freshman year, that's SMRAT®. Okay then, thanks for schooling me.

And they all lived ignorantly ever after.

They are both shotblocking big men who started playing basketball later than most of their peers. I think a comparison isn't far fetched. No one is making out Dele to be a future NBA defensive player of the year or anything.

Dele is a straight up enigma. No joke.
Brother oughta be much better than he is.

Who does the blame for that fall upon..   the player or the staff..?

I would say both. The staff should push him and give him the support he needs to develop. However, the player needs the drive and discipline to take what is being offered to him and make the most of it.

He did look in better shape his sophmore year versus his freshman year. Let's hope he continues that pace and polishes his game a bit.

At the bare minimum:

(1) I hope his IQ goes up where he doesn't make stupid fouls
(2) He learns to box out and rebound appropriately
(3) He can block some shots

So far my wish has been granted. Now I need to find the genie who granted my wish and ask him for the winning mega lotto numbers.  :D

Glock, he's been doing that. The form in his blocks is better.

he swats at every single shot that goes up, and he does a great job altering every shot in the paint, but just ask bob knight- there are times where it is better to play position than to jump with a guy and hack at the ball when you are playing a good post player. he's got to stay aggressive but just play a little smarter and stop some of those easy fouls.

Never been a big fan...but 5 blocks are Thabeet like numbers.

We haven't had a shot blocking presense since like...forever.

Would be nice.
