I think the words "expendable" are too strong when talking about Rob. However, I don't think Marillac is saying to kick him off the team. I think he is trying to say we can take is scholarship and replace it with needs based aid from the school and other sources because of his situation. He would still remain with the team and his tuition would still be paid for. The only difference is we would have one more scholarship to use.

Rob Thomas has suffered through homelessness, disability, and the worse knee injury anybody's ever seen. He's overcome all that, he works hard, and he's seemingly a good citizen. Now he's going to be thrown overboard - and for Sylvan L, who flunked out of the school that he spurned SJ for two years ago, when it really really could have made a difference to SJ if he'd attended? I don't think so.

If Sylvan wants to go to SJ so bad, how about next year he takes out a student loan or gets a job like everyone else. Then he can have Rob's scholarship in two years. There'll be more than enough to go around by then.

What makes you think Syl wants to play here?

Don't blame me. More DeWk PGs have had career ending car crashes than have had careers. There's a serious need for some driver ed down there. My theory is Hurley et al thought the trees would get called for charging.

There's a difference between JJ who got a DWI and J-Will who's career was destroyed and broke his pelvis.  Not funny.

Leave Rob Thomas alone...a Catholic university that prides itself on doing charity and graduating a family's first college grad, etc...we don't need the schollie that much this year.

even if we kept rob on the team but took away his scholarship and gave him an academic scholie or funded his education some other way, the act of taking away the scholarship for any reason would be a horrible act and the media would jump on the program and rip it apart...it would be truly disgusting to take away that kids scholie...id be embarrassed to be a fan...and not the haha we suck kind of embarrassed...this will never happen...FH kept norm around for about 2 yrs longer than he should have bc he was a nice guy, so rob isnt being booted for any reason, even if knight says he wants to play here

What is the difference if he gets money for other reasons?  Seriously, this just makes no sense.

There is no way in h*ll e has to pay a cent to go to school with everything he has.

You'd be embarassed as a fan if Rob went from having a full-ride for one thing to having a full-ride + a stipend for another?  Interesting.  It happens all the time on the JUCO ranks.  Minority student from a low-income family with a learning disability actually gets paid to attend classes.

Just curious, what's the difference? Williams wasn't wearing his helmet, didn't have a license, and was contractually forbidden from riding motorcycles. And yet he did and crashed into a tree. Oops. I'm not saying he deserved it, but he reaped what he sowed. Is the difference that Reddick didn't kill himself or anyone else? Is it merely that he drives better drunk than Williams does sober that makes one joke "classy" and "tasteful"?

yes...if robs athletic scholarship was taken away for any reason other than him violating the rules of it, i would be greatly embarrassed to be a st johns fan...idc if hes still on the team, or still not paying a cent for his education...he has done everything required of him to maintain his scholarship, and then some (vast understatement), and i dont think it matters what his financial situation is, i dont think thats a reason to push the kid around..."we really appreciate all the hard work you've put in rob, and you are a great role model and excellent young man...you also continue to work hard, and play well on the court, but we have an opportunity to get a good recruit in here this year, so we are giving him your scholarship...dont worry, you still can be on the team and get an education, you just wont be a scholarship bball player anymore...but again, thanks for all ur hard work, ur a great kid"....saying he should be happy just to attend classes bc otherwise he wouldnt afford it is not right...he worked his butt off his whole life, like many others do, to obtain the scholarship, and endured much more at this school...his story was on espn...and if we took it away, regardless of if his playing time or academic situation stayed the same, it would be viewed horribly by the media

No it's that someone getting to an accident SOBER and ruining his career is a damn shame.

JJ Redick put himself in a position to hurt others -- make fun of a DWI all you want.  JWill doesn't deserve the jokes.

I agree with you that he didn't deserve to be hurt and that it's a shame that he was, even if he is a DeWkIe. But I don't see how that disqualifies him from harmless japes and monkeyshines at his expense. There's lots of horrible things in the world - the Holocaust, genocide, pancreatic cancer, Alec Baldwin. In the main, life's a cesspool of horror, disease, pain, and degradation. If we can't share a laugh about other people's misfortune, what are we here for?

Everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. I don't think this should be the focus of discussion today. Lets look to the future of St. John's basketball....

I just thought the part about the trees taking a charge was worth a chuckle.  Apparently not, according to the smite-a-thon going on .  ;)
