ok I believe we are a top contender for him (not rivals) but if we get him and the players we have from the previous year stay. Do you think we have too many of the same type of players (SF and PF)? I am not on the recruiting trail, but who is better Sampson,  Gathers, pointer or garrett?Say they all have great years at SJU, where does Gathers fit in? It seems that we are adding a lot of players that play the same position and are the same type of player.  I love what we are doing but it just seems hard to see who will or will not get playing time.

Let the coaches worry about PT.  Too much talent shouldn't be a concern for most fans.  They're actually different types of players with different skill sets.  Garrett will be a 2/3 as will Pointer.  Sampson a 3/4.  Gathers is a 4 regardless what he fancies himself.

Agreed.  He's certainly a 4, even if he has the speed and handle to be a 3.  Right now he's a nonexistent outside shooter, and even has big trouble with FT's.  His game is inside the paint.  No doubt he can eventually expand that in a few years, but he'll undoubtedly be a powerful 4-,an, which we don't have something similar now.  Maybe God's gift is most similar, but he's already a junior this year.

Add Gathers and Kyle and we'll have five match up problems on the floor at any given time - wow!  lol

In addition to his size, he is fast and can jump. HE will fit in nicely at SJU. This team would be able to run like gazelle.

Dont know what you saw there to say hes a 4 from that video (im not saying hes not a 4). I know its only highlights from 1 game, but if he plays defense in college like he did there im not sure id want him on the floor as a 4 defending the paint. Everytime i saw him in that clip on defense, not only was he not aggressive, it looked like he wasnt putting too much effort or trying at all on defense. Again i know he cant be judged just based on that, but i hope that wasnt how he plays defense regularly.

I agree, the defense in that video from Gathers was very poor. Hopefully that's not normal for him.

He just didn't look like he has the lateral quickness on defense.  I saw Adonis Thomas take four steps to the hoop before Gathers even reacted.  Like you said he didn't look good on defense anywhere though.    Either he wasn't trying at all or he lacks some lateral quickness...I prefer to think the latter.  As you said only one video though.

To be truthful, most hs players really lack the defensive aggressiveness and know-how until they get to college.  Once they get to college, they don't get playing time if they don't play D.  It's a different game.  Guys like pointer and Garrett are the exception, as they really take pride in their D.  Defensive positioning is easily taught, and you'll find out if they are really capable when they play D1 ball.  You can be certain that Mike Dunlap will be having none of the defense Gathers was playing in the video.

You make a good point, but even if it is not Dunlap, there is no top level D1 staff that is going to put up with the defense that most of these kids play in HS.  The fact that we have Dunlap coming back next season is a dream for this young team.  It will help all of the, tremendously.  Like I said though, even without Dunlap, nobody will let Gathers continue the matador D...
