was going to ask you redmen fans for long time this.

Michigan's fab 5 recruitment class made almost national title right before C. Weber's extra time out call.

with or without polee, preseason 14th pick in BE is non sense.

Is that for only 1 to 5 top kids of ESPNU 100 making possible?

The Fab Five year you're talking about was their sophomore year, but that's just semantics, they did make it both years....

I don't think Polee is as bad as some of you are making him out to be. With a team with 9 seniors, how effective did you expect a freshman, and a bean pole at that, to be? He had some moments, and frankly, with a team of so many upperclassman, that's all you should expect from a frosh. Moments. I was looking forward to seeing him flourish this year...oh well, we move on.

I don't think he is bad at all.  On the contrary, he has a ton of upside and was going to be a good player here.  I just don't think we'll lose a step considering we just brought in 4 wings that are ranked in the top 70.  Guys like Amir, Pointer and Sampson are much further along than Polee was on the defensive end as well as aggressiveness level.  I think all of us wish Polee the best.  I just don't think losing him hurts us much at all with the guys we have coming in.

Yes we might lose some guys, but Lavin has proven more than capable of replacing the ones we do lose with top kids that want to compete.

This is sad news. I really liked his basketball IQ, athleticism and upside.
We've got 3 guys than can play the 4/5 positions right now.

If they should get into foul trouble will we be putting a shooting at center?
Last year Polee & Brownlee (both 6'7") even though starting together were our "4"s
In addition to Pelle, GG & Sampson @ 4/5, I bet you'll see a "small" lineup a lot w Harkless or Pointer @ "4"
With 10 players we're as big as last year, just not as "beefy"

I'm not saying it's horrible or anything, and looking at my last sentence, I said myself, ok, we move on.....
I was just perusing the thread and noticed more than a couple of posters making it seem as though Polee isn't good enough to play here and that's just not the truth. I think judging him on last year's team with all the seniors isn't fair at all.

Actually, not many of these kids are academic risks like you think.  Some had some issues over a year ago, but almost all have what they need.
I hear you and you're probably right - and I expect them all to make it through the NCAA clearinghouse - but until they get here, I'll still worry.

sad to see Dwayne as I was looking forward to watching him develop over 4 years as he added muscle to his athleticism.  It especially hurts to lose the first of Coach's recruits.  He could also have been a help to all the new players as he has been through a season with the coaches and understands what they are trying to accomplish.

Good luck Dwayne, I''l be rooting for you--except if you ever play against us

I was a little disappointed to hear about Polee but understand him and his fathers concerns about playing time. Polee is a talented player with great athleticism but the rest of his game is still very raw. Even though these freshman wing players coming in have no experience in the college game they seem for the most part to be pretty polished players and not so much of a project like Polee is. I could have seen Polee as a solid contributor who played major minutes for us over the next 3 years but I could also see a scenario is which he would be glued to the bench and his minutes taken by more well rounded and polished players. I wish Polee well and hope over the next couple years his body and game can mature to reach his very high potential as a players. I know its early but any guesses on where he looks to go? PAC-10 maybe.

I don't see him as Pac10/12.  And so far the only schools being mentioned are SDSU, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.  I think all 3 would be great fits for him, obviously SDSU moreso than the other two.

What annoys me is that two loya, long suffering seniors, Evans and Burrell both lost time to Polee.  Then, at the first sign of a little competition and adversity he goes running back to his Daddy in Cali.  Pretty selfish and spineless to me.  He could have at least given it a year and seen how it worked out.  Instead two of our seniors had they're cereers derailed.  I don't wish him or his father well.  If he's really NBA material he's going to have to prove it somewhere and it's not going to be handed to him like Daddy wants.  We'll be fine.  Don't much care about him.

Yeah, it's called logic.  The NCAA is full of kids who got recruited over.  How many freshmen unseat two seniors and start every game and then bail out before the smooches on his butt dry out?  He got treated damn well here for what he contributed.

I don't deny that he has a point, even though it is a bit extreme.  I think we want kids here that relish some competition, not ones that need their pops to manage playing time issues.  The ones that don't want to compete will be transferring sooner than later ala Polee.  I think it says a LOT about our incoming guys, as they all know the competition issues coming in, and are coming here as buddies, ready to compete both against each other at times and together as a team.

I wish Polee the best, but in truth he got a ton of PT last season as a freshman amongst seniors, and now with some added talent he isn't confident that he'll be able to beat out the competition, even with a year under his belt at either the SF nor PF spot?  That isn't a good sign IMO.  I know his claim is mother's illness so we probably should give him the benefit of the doubt, but like I said, I want to see competitors here.

Using lacrosse as an example, if you look at the top schools, they all have one thing in common.  They have better players in their third lines than some lesser ranked schools have in their first lines.  They have All Americans on the bench, with a common goal which is playing with and against the best competition.  As a result, those teams are always, always on top.  I envision the same scenario at St. John's.  Why are the Carolina's and Kansas' always on top?  Because they have talent at all spots and talent on the bench as well.

It seems to me that Dwayne just never had that eye of the tiger.  Hopefully, he finds a better situation for himself out west.  Unless he goes to a lower level of school though, he'll be getting plenty of competition for PT because eventually, he's going to have to outplay people for it and produce on the court.

Feel better now?

Seriously kidding aside this stuff happens. If it were entirely up to Dwayne II he'd still be in NY playing for St. John's. His Dad had a major influence on this and I don't know about everyone else but my father is extremely influential to me especially when I was 18/19. It's unfortunate but I wish Dwayne the best of luck in his future. I'm disappointed it didn't work out for him at St. John's but at the end of the day it's not that big of a deal. He really would have fit in and could have been a leader if he chose to be one.

In the future I'd like to refrain from these type of posts of bashing kids and their family. It's just unnecessary. We're here to talk about hoops.

Some of you are crazy. Polee loss is huge. Especially for this upcoming season. People were up in arms when Calhoun transfered and Polee is / will be better. Tough loss.

BTW some of you are in for a rude rude awakening. I have no doubt the incoming Frosh are talented but we are going to struggle and lose often next season. That is not anegative, it is simply understanding the situation. I am still looking forward to the season as much as I have in a long time. Some of you are in for a pretty big reality check though.

Losing a 4ppg player will never be the definition of a "huge loss".  Polee was still an underclassmen and would have provided a limited amount of experience to this roster.  I also think we'll be a lot better than you think.  You underestimate these kids ability and depth as well as our coaching staff's ability to get them playing together.  Last year we had a limited team with little scoring ability, little up front and a lot of limitations.  We had some experience, but our two best players were JC players.  This year we have more up front, on the wing and in the backcourt in every way.  We were a horrible rebounding team last year which I think will improve a lot this season and I also think defensively we'll be tougher by mid-season.  Sure we will lose games, but I don't think we'll be at the bottom of the league.

These kids can really play.  Sampson, Polee and Harkless are ALL capable of being double-digit scorers where Polee wasn't.  These guys are not "deer-in-the-headlights" entering college like Polee was.  Lavin talks about swag, and these kids have it.  Polee didn't.  I have no doubt these kids will be competing much earlier than Dwayne because they go at it at both ends and want to make opponents pay.  Killer instinct is different with these kids.

Good post. After last season, everybody should know enough not to discount experience's value.  I enjoyed watching Dwayne las t season.  On another note, why are some discounting the health issue of Dwayne's mom that we know nothing about? Sure, his dad may be playing a part because of PT, but why can't he be playing a part because of his wife's health? Could be two-fold - I think some are too cynical and judgemental on this board - and some are the usual suspects...

Polee was a 4ppg player on a team with 9 seniors. So that measurement isn't true. He had a lot of potential to fit in and excel.

Losing him hurts because he had a lot of dynamic potential that is unmatched by a lot of people.

He can be replaced and at the end of the day won't be a major loss but its a set back.

He started to win the tip pretty much.  We've established that.  Your boy(s) still got more minutes.  Besides they were foul magnets so more minutes wouldn't have helped.  Stay classy!
