I trust Lavin but this is getting confusing.  Why so many guards? Are we becoming Shooting Guard U?  I will just have to wait and see how this pans out I guess...

Don't worry.  It is all being taken care of.

And rejoice.  SJU just got back a legit top 100/125 player, worst case it will be 2013.  Still a shot at 2012 and he was not even an immediate necessity.

Call me crazy but Lav has all tha tricks up his sleeve. Wouldn't be shocked if we still land obekpa but if not and ruling turner out . Do we go chandler or Nolan ? Does Nolan have any other visits lined up? And is there is still a possibility we land both?

Great news!  So we are at 12 scholarships, with a bunch of possibles for #13.

Forget Max as a non-scholarship player.  Read JJ's great review of the counter points in that regard.

I agree with some of the posters that a change or two might happen with the 12 scholarships to date, but leave Phil out of it.  He has proven he not only belongs, but will contribute this season and in the future.

Right now I would consider Michael the guy we most need if we had one spot to fill, with no other changes.  The problem there is we will not know if Michael will qualify any time soon.  Next choice is a toss up between our 6'9 PF/C visitor this week end and Josiah.  We need height, but oh, a chance to land Josiah.  I am glad Coach is making those decisions.

If I could wave my magic wand, besides Darrick, I would add both centers and Josiah, and, unfortunately, drop Felix and Max.

And lets not go crazy and have half the team going pro after the upcoming season.  Besides our great SG, I doubt if Pointer and Garrett are ready for the big show in 2013.  They both need time to continue their development under Coach and his staff.

Just read the Turner site.  When things go bad, they really go bad for some people.

Coach, go for the height!!!  I just wish Chris O.  was in the equation.

The way I see it re:Max. Not sure if he took an official visit. I also believe he was an academic scholi at Harvard. Why would Lavin use a BB scholi on Hoper if Hooper can get an academic scholi? Especially with just about all scholis used and recruits still on the radar. What are the counterpoints you are referring to? Cant see us not taking Nolan if he wants in and cant see us taking Nolan and not saving a scholi for Chandler.

Fantastic news!  Now we just need Chandler to qualify and lock him up to close the book on the 2012 class.

Jesus who would have thought depth would be our strength. It seems as if him and nolan are close as well. They had some back and forth going on twitter about visiting.
Or a problem. Were running out of scholis. Cant take both Nolan and Chandler, unless a scholi opens up. What if Lavin takes Nolan and Chandler and Turner become available?  Like Moose said w DLO ,Greene Balamou and Woods + Marco + Hooper, we may have a bit of a log jam, which sometimes backfires. I believe it was the logjam of SFs last year that motivated Polee to transfer.

Again, this is Steve Lavin we're talking about.   He brought in Baron Davis, Earl Watson, Scheal Cotton, Billy Knight, Rico Hines, Todd Ramasar (Hoopscoop top 100 guard) AND accepted a transfer from Penn State's starting PG, Moose Bailey.  In the SAME class in 1998.  The NEXT class he brought in McDAA SG Ray Young and Swingmen JaRon Rush  and Matt Barnes (because the NCAA was busy screwing Schea Cotton out of 2 years of his life).

This is pretty normal roster management for him.   Usually has one true center, and a backup center who can also play power forward - Jelani McCoy/Travis Reed; Dan Gadzuric/Jerome Moiso; Mike Fey/Ryan Hollins.   I know Hollins is a six year 7'0 NBA center, but when signed for UCLA he was a 6'9 205 lb Track Star (7'1" High Jump, 22'3" long Jump, 48'8" triple jump, 11.4 100m sprinter), and played as much PF as he did Center at UCLA - he just happend to GROW 3 additional inches after coming to UCLA (he was just a baby when he started at UCLA -  After 4 years at UCLA and 6 years in the NBA, he'll STILL be only 27 when NEXT season starts.

Can somebody explain the rule regarding why gift wouldn't be able to go on academic ship for next season

The way I understand it...if you are a recruited athlete you can not receive another form of aid.

You are considered a Recruited athlete if one of the following occurred:

1. If they provide the prospect with an official visit.
2. If they have an off-campus contact with the prospect or the prospect’s parents or legal guardians.
3. If they offer the prospect a National Letter of Intent or an athletic scholarship agreement.
4. If they initiate a telephone conversation with the prospect or his parents or legal guardians more than one time.

Otherwise they could offer a scholarship for their video games skills

I don't think he is on scholarship.  I can tell you that everyone breaks #2 and #4 with regards to preferred walkons...even Coach K recruits many of his walkons.  It's very plausible that Jakkar initiated the contact with Hooper and relayed Hooper's interest to the staff....that Hooper's dad paid for the visit....that there was no off campus contact (seems most likely)...and there was no more than one phone call before the visit.

I think if he pays his own way, a la Drummond, he can walk on whether he was recruited or not.  Prior to Drummond, I was under the impression that if he was recruited then he couldn't walk on.  But apparently you won't count against the scholarship count as long as you don't receive any aid.  I'm leaning towards either Hooper not on scholarship or Balamou prepping.

That makes a lot of sense to me, because if you see a lot of smoke, there has to be some fire, has to.

Where do we see smoke? I think the speculation is basically us.

Right here, amongst the message board mongers, recruitniks.

I have followed recruiting long enough to know that recruiting is fluid. Things change all the time. Just because a player verbally committed to SJU does not mean the staff has to honor/acknowledge it. That is a fact. The saying, "is the ink dry yet" is applicable here. I will ask you this very honest question, sir: Has Hooper or Felix (the players that are rumored to be most likely to get dropped) signed an LOI? Nope.

There is no way in hell we are going to settle for a Harvard transfer or a 4 year player like Felix IF we can land ourselves two legitimate bigs. NO WAY.

The immediate success of our ball club, more than likely, hinges on it.

There is smoke... It is here. Extract from that what you will. Place whatever stock in it you wish. My spidey senses detect something goign down. the tweet only makes me feel stringer about it.

Again the scholarship situation will work itself out.  Don't worry about that.

Wood has work to do to get cleared but LOVES SJU and Lavs.  He is going to do everything to be part of the 2012 class because he understands if he has to do another year nothing is guaranteed since his position is not necessarily a weakness going forward.

No surprise but Turner is out, period.

Fluidity... I love the message being sent to recruits, get in while you can. Nothing is guaranteed tomorrow. Before you know it, guys will be scared to get injured, because there may not be a spot for them when they are healthy agin.

Solid depth, it does a team good.

'79 does that imply the staff is still waiting to hear from Obekpa?   They think they have a shot?

Because we had heard they had all but moved on.
