What would perception be?

If St. John's would have played a cupcake schedule instead of one of the nation's toughest schedules?

or even if they beat Northeastern, Detroit, and one of the games in Holiday Festival? Would they be ranked?

Detroit and Northeastern are two losses that will haunt this team when it comes to possible NIT berth (lets be real). And did they not beat Fordham in the Holiday Festival?

Anyway I don't think the team would be looked at differently, if anything they'd be looked at more like Providence.

An over .500 record is need for NIT correct?

You need al least a 500 record for the NIT. Lavin likes a tough schedule , he feells the team grows from tough compitition. Cupcake schedule didnt help Providence.

Take it a step further in the "what if" scenario.....
* SJ should have beaten the above except for the lack of a talented point guard. Remember Nurideen's 2 missed FTs that would have won the A&M game?
* were it not for Phil Greene's horrific games against Uconn and Louisville where he went 0-9, SJ could have beaten both of those BE games!
In the above fantasy scenario these Freshmen would now be 13-2!!!!!!!! All this without their head coach!
Funny, but the most important recruit now is a transfer in Jamal Branch at the PG slot!

and if st. john's lost to texan pan-am, cincy and those other two cupcakes that we narrowly escape in the beginning of the year we'd be 4-11.

these "what ifs" are dumb cause it works both ways.

What if Lavin didn't have cancer?  We can play this game all day.

Fact remains, anyone who has been disappointed by what has taken on the court so far with these freshman need to re evaluate their expectations.  This is a great group. Harkless and Harrison are the cornerstones. Pointer, Greene,  and GG are legit talents that will only get better under the tutelage of the coaching staff.

By the end of the spring, Lavs will have a few more studs lined up ( he always has, no reason he won't continue to land great recruits) and we will be on her way.  The kids that decide to decommit and go elsewhere will be the ones sorry. We will move on and grab the next guy.

BTW, I'm glad we don't pay a cupcake schedule.  This season, regardless of outcome or record, will be the best thing that ever happened to this team and players moving forward.

No, I actually forgot him.  Had a few brews during the Giants game. :D

Not my post but I'll respond.  Garrett is more than legit.  Love his athleticism.  Love his potential.  He is the ultimate teammate too.  Thrown into the fire without a full practice under his belt.  A true SJU warrior!

I dont think anyone is dissapointed with how these freshman have performed.  The frustration came from the 2 ineligible players, nuri transferring and all the decommits.

An over .500 record is need for NIT correct?

From Wiki:

The NCAA announced a revamped selection process starting with the 2006 tournament. The main highlights are:
Teams are no longer required to have .500 or greater records to receive bids. Even with this change, however, all teams receiving invitations for the NIT have had .500 or greater records.
Similar to the automatic bids the NCAA Tournament grants for all conference tournament champions, all teams that won regular-season conference championships but failed to earn NCAA tournament bids are guaranteed places in the NIT.

What is your deal?  You are so negative it is ridiculous.  You actually seem like you know what you are saying and you are a pretty funny poster when you are not on a ledge.

How can you not see how bright the future is for this team?  Harrison is a STUD.  Harkless is a STUD.  Greene will be every bit as good as Ricky Moore was for Uconn for that title run.  Pointer and Garrett are freaks of nature and defensive standouts with NBA potential.  GG will hold down the center spot for a year until Lavin can add some firepower.  We are about to sign a top 50 pure point guard who is known as a shutdown defender...a kid that has college experience and will have a year of practice with our guys...a kid that has already played a big game at MSG for a top 25 team.

Grab one of Sampson/Obepka/Gathers, a shooter, and a big and we are going to be INSANE next season.  Add two or all three of those bigs and it will get silly around here real fast.

The  the lack of size and depth has forced Dunlap to put a stable full of greyhounds in a NYC apartment.  Pointer and Greene must be listening to to Springstein on repeat, because they were born to run!

Wins and losses are not as important as quality wins and bad losses. UK isn't a bad loss. They won't lose more than 3-4 games this year. Losing to Northeastern, a game that was supposed to be an easy win, is truly awful no matter how you slice it. Detroit is also a terrible loss.

This program always loses games like these. Roberts did his best to pad the teams win total because it padded his own horrible coaching record, but at the end of the day, it doesn't prepare you for anything when you pound Bryant.

And even as we loaded up on cupcakes, they would still get us every year without fail.

detroit beat butler by eleven...were up by 17 in the first half.  not world beaters, but not a cupcake either.

amir garret looked LOST in his first game with us.  now he looks like he belongs.  he's come a long way.  i predict he'll be a stud...

I'm not sure what Garrett  can provide offensively this year.   It's really tough coming in mid year from prep school and jumping into the big east.  We do know he is a very good  athlete and is a good unselfish teammate.
